Monty Python Returns
pigpogm writes "The remaining members of the Monty Python team are to return to do some new material for the BBC. It's part of the celebrations for their 30th anniversary - will they still 'have it'? Should be fun to find out." It's a one-time special scheduled to run this fall in the U.K. I hope it doesn't take too long for this to make it across the Atlantic. I saw the "remaining" Pythoners not long ago on HBO, with (the late) Graham Chapman appearing as ashes in an urn, and IMO they still "have it."
Gosh, I wonder if the new monty python will be like The New Star Wars (TM). I can hardly wait.
I'd say that about 1/2 to 2/3s of the sketches are good, 1/2 to 1/3 are shitty, and some precious few are downright awful. I never understand why people don't grasp the fact that the awful sketches are meant to be awful. That's the joke.
For those interested, Monty Python's Quest or Search or whatever for the Holy Grail (one of the funniest movies ever made... right up there with Animal House and Army of Darkness) will be released this Christmas on DVD. You can reserve a copy on amazon.com already if I'm not mistaken.

Actually we don't have "don't have" but we do have " haven't got". Official comment on this year's GCSE results in English is "Well the standard has gone down again, like, you know..."
Now, I've noticed a tendency for this thread to get rather silly. Now I do my best to keep things moving along, but I'm not having things getting silly. Those last two posts got very silly indeed, and the one about the penguin was even sillier. Now, nobody likes a good laugh more than I do ... except perhaps my wife and some of her friends ... oh yes and Cmdr Taco. Come to think of it most people like a good laugh more than I do. But that's beside the point. Now let's have a good clean healthy thread. Ten, nine, eight and all that.

Someone posted to an earlier discussion about MP saying that there will be a release of all the first and second season Flying Circus episodes on two DVD's. Does anyone have any information on this?
Actually, I wish to have an argument.

Here at Microsoft, we believe in quality not just an attribute, but as a way of life.
Despite what people in certain quarters may imply about us, we honestly care about your business. You are a valued customer.
Unlike those snivelling little open source shits, what with their smug superiority complexes and secret handshakes.. claiming that their work is much more stable than whatever a magnificent bulwark of free enterprise like Microsoft Corporation could possibly provide! Everybody seems to hate the winner these days, don't they? We worked our fingers to the bone for the likes of those ingrates, and created the largest software organization in the process! What do those.. those hippies have to show? Red Hat? Oh come on now! We blew up penguins in my day, and I don't see why that trend shouldn't continue into the next century!! I wouldn't give the time of day let alone source code to any of those underpaid wretched Commie student bastards IF YOU BEGGED ME!!
Excuse me.
This fine new Merced box.. okay, play the little Intel sound logo here.. ding!.. thank you.. is running the latest and greatest version of Windows NT, your best choice for an Intel (ding!) system to function as a reliable server!

Anyone else wish to continue this thread?..

".sig,
We don't have a fall here in the UK. Maybe they'll show it during the autumn instead. ;)
Unfortunately, if they lost it way back then, the BBC probably destroyed it, like all those old episodes of Doctor Who. It could be lost forever.
I miss Meept.
...based on past experience of BBC "theme nights", the "new material" is more likely to be a few sketches that a new episode. Still, the more Monty Python in the world, the better...
Do any of our U.K. /.'ers know when this will be on specifically? I'll be touring around the U.K. this fall (or autumn, whatever) and would love to see this. Besides, it could take years to cross the pond to CBC or PBS.
Laugh while you can, monkey boy!
The first two seasons will be available in full on four DVDs, each sold separately. First two volumes are out on 9/28; three and four are due 11/16.
You're gonna have to deal with that.

Better yet, Cleese could do ads where he tries to return MS-ware with a Bill-Gates lookalike behind the counter ...
BG-alike: no, this OS isn't frozen, it's just reading the registry! Lovely OS, Windows, eh, beau'iful GUI!
Cleese: (incredulous) Readin' the registry??!?? Look, I took the liberty of typing 'ver' into a DOS window, and I found that the only reason that GUI works is because it's running DOS underneath.
BG-alike: If I hadn't put DOS underneath there, this OS would pry apart protected memory with GDI.EXE and ... voom!
Cleese: Look, this OS wouldn't 'voom' if you ran Apache on it! this ... is bloatware ... it's had the biscuit ... this ... is an ex- OS!
well I'm not feeling terribly creative right now, but at least you get the idea ...

Well, it's just before half past four, and time for the penguin on top of your television set to explode. :-)

With the latest antics of Microsoft (re the NT/Alpha thing), maybe they could collaberate with Bill Gates, who seems to be providing my life with just as much humour these days as Cleese and the gang:

"Old man yells at systemd"
he's a lumber jack and he's ok, he sleeps all night and he works all day.
some guy said:
"As someone who saw them first time round on television in the UK, I can assure you that they lost it after the first series."
As someone who's first introduction to MP was "The Holy Grail" at the age of 14 or so, I'm curious as to whether you're saying that the upcoming/new series isn't as good as the old material, or whether you are saying that there was a pre-flying circus version of monty python that was better. either way, all of the MP movies I've seen have been hilarious on the first watch, and most of them survived multiple watchings. I've also seen most of the flying circuses, and I'd say that about 1/2 to 2/3s of the sketches are good, 1/2 to 1/3 are shitty, and some precious few are downright awful.
SO....
to sum up:
tv sucks.
monty python only sucks occassionally.
go monty. go monty.
