SuSE and VA Linux Partnership
calibanDNS writes "SuSE has a news article on their web page announcing a new partnership with VA Linux. Apparently SuSE will help develop a software load for VA systems. " Co-development is set to start in December and will mean that SuSE will be an option on VA systems.
How does this effect the stuff they do with Debian?

VA Linux now uses SuSE as the "official" distro. So what? Big deal. I'd just reformat it to RH (or a clean SuSE install). Still coming with Linux, not Windows. In general, I don't like most OSes default installation procedure. I want a BLANK formatted hard drive. I know what to do after that. =) After all, I'm OS agnostic (should start a movement...). But, this is why I build my own systems...
However, I almost hate to think that when I buy a VA Linux system, I'm *paying* for the OS. Wasn't that the whole deal of open-source? Don't want it? Don't pay for it.
Seems like we are becoming our enemy, not becoming different.

Since when is SuSE a stock cooperation (AG)? Have I missed their IPO? Last time I checked, SuSE has been a private limited company (GmbH) and it still says so on their homepage. (Not that I'd have the money to make some major investment, though

va linux gave me a free copy of the sgi/debian distro, and it is *okay*, but that's it. there are outright errors in the documentation that make it impossible to install unless you already know how to do it. IE, bad dos commands, missing words in sentences. (hint: use the book, not the pamphlet, which has gross errors). VA had great, friendly people at the booth.
i suspect Corel is going to spank everyone; at least they've rewritten the book on linux distros. Having a in-house pro development staff leveraging the "best of the free" is going to be the linux of the future.
I tried several basic drag/drop operations in Suse, at their booth, and they didn't work. Corel showed some cool DND within their apps.
Looks what Corel has:
1) 4 step "brain dead" installation.
2) free download or $4.95 CD. (plus shipping)
3) Corel draw, Quattro Pro, Paradox within months.
4) Friendly booth staff at comdex.
No one else had a demo that came close to Corels. Caldera's was...ok. RedHat had little exciting or new. How much is RedHat now, anyway? The "Pro" version is like $149 or something...is this a joke?
Plus, I think "back offices" world wide will get a big boost from the upcoming Jbuilder, Delphi and C++Builder for Linux from Borland. Supposedly a quick recompile of the win code and you're done.

Has anyone installed Corel Linux yet? I remember that people didn't have kind words about the beta release. In particular Nick Petreley said the beta was buggy and incompete. How is the final release?
Due to some Intel investments in VA Linux, they will probably never ship Athlons. By doing so they are costing their customers money and producing and inferior (or at least slower product).
Now granted this is only true for single CPU systems cause there is no SMP Athlon board out yet. But when Q1 arrives and Athlon SMP is 50% faster than anything Intel has (due to the EV6), VA Linux is really going to be hurting their customers by denying the obvious: the Athlon is better technology than anything Intel has.
I would look to Penguin Computing to be the new leader in Linux systems. Unless VA Linux sees the light I am not sure investing in their IPO would be such a good idea.
I don't understand why VA is limiting itself in this way. They tend to it a lot, with Intel and now it seems to be that way with SuSE. I don't really care what distribution is on there, as long as it's Linux (Or BSD). .. guess I'll continue building my own.
I hope that VA realizes that they could get just as much done without bundling with Intel or SuSE or any other specific vendor.

Probably just a typo. AFAIK, the IPO has not yet taken place, or has it? If not, when will it be? In the summer, rumors said it would be before the end of this year. However, now it's already past mid November, and if they really planned to do it before December 31st, shouldn't we have heard more specific details by now. Are they postponing it? Or has it already happened, but nobody noticed?

...I've never used SuSE before. But I think that if Debian ever went el-crappo that's the one I'd run as I hear it is very good for software development, though Slackware would be another big choice. I don't have any stock in computer companies... but I may look into it now. I may wait, as well, because the day afer I decided to wait on getting RedHat stock it plummetted. I'm lucky, I guess.

I've checked Corel Linux, and I must say I'm rather disappointed with it. ..., ...), including some packages that have known security problems (proftpd 1.2.0pre1 as only ftpd, bind 8.1.2).
Yes, it does have some nice new packages, but by not releasing the source before releasing their final version, they were hard on the border to GPL violations (talking primarily about their KDE modifications), and that's what makes them appear so different. If Red Hat hadn't released all its contributions to GNOME before releasing Red Hat Linux 6.0, it would have had pretty much the same showoff effect.
Concerning Corel Linux itself, the installer is really nice for beginners, but lacks customization possibilities for more advanced users.

Guess it's ok for a first try - but in the long run, they'll need to change quite a number of things if they want to compete with other distributors.
I hope they don't make the mistake of making Corel Draw, Quattro Pro and Paradox available for their distribution only.

There is a difference between advertising and news. This story was great news, it shows that cooperation between commercial Linux vendors is happening and that will lead to less confusion in the market, and a better customer experience with Linux in general. The responses from most people on Slashdot are simply advertising of their own pet product or project. Stick to the topic and read the initial post! We'd all be interested in your comments about the significance of the event described in the post, but please don't waste our time with your stupid remarks. For those of you who can't read full text, here are some bullets: 1) They will EXPAND the range of fine-tuned distributions. Did anyone hear the word replace? Is EXPAND the range of choice a bad thing? HELLLLLLOOOOOO 2) They will provide Suse as an OPTION. Here again, the magic word: OPTION!! other options could be no OS at all...read the post, Luke! 3) Suse will help VA to provide customized solutions to VA's customers. Isn't that what Linux is all about? Why do you think the souce code is needed, to paste it to your bathroom walls? It's about freedom to customize things for your own needs. Most people are not Linux gurus, they need a company to help them customize their systems. In case you don't realize it already, this too, is a GOOD thing! That's all Folks...

Since we always end up discussing distributions of Linux, no matter what the article or post is actually about, why don't we just have our very own, in-house Linux Distro Sux vs. Rox O'Meter. This way we could get all our pet peeves of off our chest, and move on to really important issues like: VA Linux vs. Penguin Computing vs. ASLab vs. making your own from scratch. A SUX-ROX Meter would be just the new feature to rile up the readership !! ;-)
