So you're saying that a grocer is alright to tell people that they can't buy a particular brand of cereal at their establishment because they consumer can get it on the blackmarket (where the grocer can arbitrarily brick your device for the act of enabling it to be in the black market at all). The metaphor is breaking down, so we'll just say it's like a car, and the stuff happens.
And there are operating systems other than Windows, but if Microsoft ever tried to pull this crap they would get bitch slapped back to Web 1.0 by the DOJ.
I would be perfectly happy with Apple being as autocratic as they like with their app store if it weren't the *only* source for apps for their platforms.

That might be the most insightful thing I've read in a long time. In lieu of real mod points, please accept a virtual one knowing I'll be using your logic in future arguments.
Maybe you think they're exorbitant but many of us do not. I'm personally happy to pay $135 for a calculus book that I can turn around and sell for $30 when the semester is over since by then the entire field of mathematics will have been been rewritten. Publishers have to eat too, and beluga caviar with dodo eggs spread on the backs of beautiful hookers by chimp butlers don't come cheap!
I'd argue that you really don't need to reinvent the wheel. I like the idea of guest accounts. Simply throttle their bandwidth to something appropriate for the activity. If you're running a hotspot and are graciously allowing your neighbors access then 10 connections with 20 kbps each seems perfectly reasonable to me.
I'd say the Android OS is on its way. The one thing I'd want to see is the manufactures not crippling the device. I'd prefer a vanilla version or one somewhat optimized for a tablet interface. I've been using the Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my netbook for a few months now and am fairly happy with it. Does anybody have an opinion on whether this option may be a little more prepared for "prime time" than Android?
There's actually a setting on the iPad to increase the power of the Reality Distortion Field (TM). Once it's up high enough you won't even notice the eye strain.
I was thinking of the ads being integrated into the apps, but you do make a compelling point about ads on websites as well. I wonder what the odds are of Apple allowing an adblocker in their app store. On my Android device I can simply add lines to my hosts file for offending domains.
But how long until the other players decide that AT&T shouldn't be the only ones with their customers over a barrel? We saw it with the increase in text messaging rates. When one company screws their customers in the name of profit, the others will soon follow suit.
Part of the problem is the new ubiquity of advertising in apps. Why should we subsidize ads directed at us? It wasn't a big deal with an unlimited plan but now every byte is precious. I still have my unlimited T-Mobile plan, but it's only a matter of time before they fall into line with the other major players just like with the increase in text messaging rates. The FCC needs to step in and investigate this collusion.
I was in NYC last week and was very surprised at how much faster my T-Mobile data connection was. At the time i thought it was my imagination. Now back on the West Coast I'm started to feel a little slighted.
While I agree that we are exporting America's laws (for better or for worse) I refuse to lay claim to them. Just about every politician out there is a lawyer or former lawyer with absolutely no connection to their respective constituencies. They live privileged lives and pass laws that only benefit themselves. Voter apathy is ungodly high simply because we've been conditioned to believe that anybody not in one of the two parties isn't worth electing. When there is so little difference between D and R who can blame people for simply letting themselves get railroaded.
If I recall (it's been awhile since I've taken an engineering course) the first rule of engineering is if it isn't broken, don't fix it. Why reinvent the wheel when ePub is a perfectly good standard that is already darn near universal.
The anti-religious zealots are just as tedious as the religious zealots. You're convinced your answer is right and that everybody else is an idiot...sound familiar?
Seeing as how most of the movies on TPB are blockbusters, and how most of them have profit margins that would make the Catholic church blush I'd say things will go merrily along as they always have.
The main problem is that even court costs can be enough to destroy somebody's life. The odds are if you're downloading you're probably not among the wealthy elite in the world. They're probably more like me, in their 20's and only a few missed paychecks from being homeless. I simply don't think that a few hundred megabytes is worth the real human misery that you would cause. Legally they are in the right, but that doesn't make it right.
How about being reasonable about damages? What kind of mind-altering drugs does it take to somehow justify that downloading a lossy version of your movie is worthy of suing for tens of thousands of dollars while stealing the actual DVD from the store is usually only a misdemeanor slap on the wrist and a few hundred dollar fine?
I remember cutting my teeth on the Starfleet Command series, and of course the modders favorite the Civilization series. By kid's standards both series are playable today (I know some of us still bust out the old 8 bit consoles but not many 14 year olds do so).
And nothing of value was lost.

Wow, I saw you had a low ID, but I never realized they went back that far!

How about if the statement is rephrased from

I swear man! Just let me crack one more WEP and I'll go cold turkey.

God is their backup solution.
If this is true, shouldn't they have been prepared for a flood?

The second is supported by a large ammount of evidence.
My friend, I will certainly grant you that.
Mod up please!

Infringer! Infringer! And what do we do with infringers?
