Where the hell did you get those numbers, because they don't match reality Federal Budget Breakdown.
Especially if you at the numbers analytically. That 23% defense spending is misleading in a lot of ways. All of the Veterans' programs aren't included in it(Dept. of Veteran's affairs). Nuclear weapon maintenance(Department of Energy) isn't included in it. Dept of Homeland Security isn't included in it. The deathandtaxes poster has a pretty good breakdown that shows this.
Goddammit kdawson. That's it, your articles are blocked. You're the f***ing New York Post of Slashdot. Whatever merit any article you post may have you manage to completely overpower it with sensationalist editorial bias.
FWIW people do click on them, and buy the products/fill out the form requested. It's a similar volume to spam where only a small number of "impressions" get clicks, and only a small number of clicks get conversions to the desired target action.
Self checkout is simply automation. With enough volume (and supermarkets have huge volume) automation allows companies to reduce labor costs. This sort of self checkout automation is not unique to any single company so it is unlikely any supermarket will be able to retain all of the savings due to the thin margins and intense price competition.
It's automation without accuracy or speed increases though.
but they're well aware of your irrational fear of inanimate objects so they just don't tell you.
You can chastise him for being overcautious, but the argument you're using is the same hippy-dippy bullshit people use when they talk about something being better because it's "natural". Guns warrant more caution than other "inanimate objects", and a certain amount of respect for recognizing the power of a change to influence a situation is vital to responsible gun ownership anyway.
It probably depends if it is considered a famous trademark or not. I was talking to an IP lawyer conversationally this weekend about a similar subject (past slashdot article: a person trying to sell 3rd party software that leverages Ebay advertising their product online.)
If I type 'The Post' in google the first result that comes up is The [New York] Post. The second result is a student run paper. I didn't know there was another well-known 'The Post', but that's the one I was referring to.
From what I understand it's more like The Post, also owned by Murdoch, than Weekly World News. Rubbish nonetheless. Watch for the The Post write it's own story about it then The Washington Post, again owned by Murdoch, to write about the 'controversy'.
So so far the 7th 8th and 9th Circuits have ruled this way. I wonder if one will go against the grain eventually and it will go higher or if they will all rule this.
Every time I start thinking about creating a PayPal account because it would be nice to give money to some of the web places that I frequent, but only accept PayPal some story comes along about how willing they are to screw you over. Hopefully this publicity forces them to do the right thing here soon.
Huh? I always thought religion worked like this: Man is fallible, God is infallible (and therefore always "correct") so believe what is written here because it is the Word of God.
Whereas science says nothing can be proven "correct", we can only get better at modeling the world, but here are our current models and the data that supports them.
*Cackles Maniacally*
Now go, my ratbots. Go and wheel your way into the glorious future, heralding humanity's DOOM!
*More Evil Laughter*
Interesting that they include the trust funds of social security too. I didn't know that part.

I don't know the value of visiting those particular sites you mentioned, but I definitely agree that selection bias is something to avoid.
FWIW always recording(or being able to record) your own actions and using it to monitor those with authority over you is called sousveillance.
I find David Brin's writing on the subject to be rather insightful even when I don't agree with him, but of course, YMMV.
Let's Rooolllll out!

Cute, and denial is more than just a river in Egypt.
Lawbreakers have always been popular in culture, from mafiosos, to mobsters, to cowboys, to Robin Hood, to Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves.
Trying to rename hip-hop culture to prison culture, and then blaming it for the evils of society is not racist, but pointing out the bigotry is?
PRISON-culture? You're calling baggy clothes prison-culture? Wow, I hope you realize how psuedo-intellectually racist that is.
Probably not, I'll just get off your lawn then so you can continue blaming the same young people stereotypes for what's wrong with the world today.
And where does Animal fit in in all of this?
The client.
America didn't invent taxes...
I thought you were going to suggest that Harry Whittington was sitting on an insulator.

Those were my questions as well. I wonder if they could leverage the energy in the molten rock somehow. It will be swimming in a sea of energy.
And maybe I've heard too much technobabble over the years, but doesn't molten rock have its own magnetic fields?

Except in the U.S. both 'sides' spend the same amount of money and want to expand gov't power. The difference is where to spend and expand.
So that's why all call centers are equally horrible no matter what ISP I use. Race to the bottom indeed.
