You can take _any_ language and make a hash of it. Trust me - I see it all the time.
The problem is the people writing the code. It's easy to be "clever" in perl and say a lot in a little. That ability gets abused, sometimes. That hardly makes it an "inferior" language.
I agree with you: code should be maintainable. And, except in cases of oversight, I opt for readability over cleverness, because I know, at some point down the road, I'll have to maintain this. Just because a language _allows_ you to obfuscate the code doesn't mean you have to. If you want to blame something for ugly code, blame the practitioners.
It's like an artist with paints: he or she can create a very beautiful picture, or a hideous, festering pile of trash. Do you blame the materials or the artist?
I watched the womens' marathon, last night, while at a local Applebee's - at least when they didn't break away for another five minute commercial - but, other than that, pretty much zip. I don't feel like rewarding either NBC or China for their complicity in subjugating Tibet and supporting genocide in Darfur. Fuck 'em.
Cheating in gymnastics - underage athletes - and requiring their country flag bearers to strip nude just to apply for the "privilege" strikes me as wrong.
And I _do_ check whether the stuff I buy is made in China. Sometimes I can't avoid buying it, though.
For all muscle groups, simultaneously, and cardio as well, you can't beat wrestling. Seriously. I'm rather lucky that my son is now big enough to give me a run for my money, because it's easily the best overall workout I get. I do weights; I run, cycle and swim, and I enjoy them all. But I have more fun, and the commraderie of going at each other, almost full speed, is heads and shoulders above the other activities.
Of course, that's all well and good, but it's tough to find a mat and a good partner. If you're adventurous, there might be MMA clubs in the area. I don't really go for that - I'm not out to injure anyone - but they'd probably have mats and people with whom you can roll around. Oh, and trainers, too. That helps.
In fact, I don't know why there aren't more adult wrestling clubs. Yeah, some guys are dicks about it - bullies who never grew up - but most guys into wrestling are actually pretty cool. There just aren't that many that are regularly into it.
I had a similar experience with an English teacher of mine in HS. I was fortunate to have him for two different grades. He was a credit to his profession, while most of my other teachers were either forgettable or distinct drawbacks.
But, overall, your experience shouldn't be terribly surprising. Even among us "super genius Slashdotters," we're not all created equal - or else we'd all have "+5 Insightful" posts.
Prof. Weiman is obviously a stand-out teacher. How do we find people like that and push them into teaching, while encouraging the others to do something else at which they're truly useful?
I love Expose' on the Mac, but that's not what keeps me from investing a lot of time in Linux, lately - and I go as far back as '94: it's ease of software installation.
When Linux, any distro, has a software installation mechanism that's as easy as the Mac's, I'll give it another try. Yes, apt-get is good, but it's not yet in the Mac's "drag-and-drop" league.
I suggested, quite a while ago, as a topic of an "Ask Slashdot," whether a "Slashdot Party" would make sense. I got a form letter politely rejecting the idea. (Hey editors, kindly see "figure one...")
Not that we can agree on whether the sky is blue - or, given our proclivities, to what degree - I still think it would be a great idea. Nerds need representation, too, and neither the Repugs nor the Dems are up to the job.
Interesting point: I wonder if Qwest can sue for damages resulting from _not_ complying with the illegal requests, on the basis that they were illegal. I'm sure Qwest suffered some "punishment" because they didn't play along.
Raise my kid like what? He's honest, just like I am. He's hard-working, probably more than I was, as a kid, and he doesn't cheat. Couldn't ask for a better child, if I say so, myself.
You did catch the "sarcasm" in my message, right?
As for a butt kicking, your kid is welcome to try. I s'pose I should mention mine's 23, for starters, and a two-time NY state wrestling championship qualifier (took 4th, before the division split). He gives me a run for my money, and I'm sure he'd welcome a challenge. I'm not as young as I used to be, you know...;-)
How quaint. "Honesty" & "integrity." In a society that gave the highest office to a drug using, military duty skipping, domestic spying president whose primary objective seems to be helping his war-profiteering and Big Oil buddies increase their already astronomical portfolios./sarcasm
For the record, I graduated without cheating, too, and know what you're talking about. It just strikes me that, for any kids paying attention, nowadays, cheating and adjusting the rules to fit your needs is the lesson they're getting. Those who play honestly are just schnooks.
Bush & friends illegally spied on US citizens for years, and they won't see any jail time, or even civil lawsuits, thanks to yesterday's FISA vote. But this kid is threatened with 38 years.
So these colonists were told to pay a tax on tea, though they had no say in the matter. When they complained to the King - something about "taxation without representation" - he told them, "Suck it." So they went and pitched a ship-load of tea into the drink to protest. And they were surprised when the crown sent soldiers after them why???
At some point, a person is going to fight back against what he perceives as a bad law. I'm certainly not jealous of his ignorance of expediency and pragmatism, but I admire his courage for standing up for his convictions.
I wonder if modern Americans would have the stones to do what the original Patriots did: stand up to oppressive government. Well, Hello Mr. Bush!
I think it's not only that we don't protest, but the "liberal media" - hint: it isn't - wouldn't report on it, anyway, thus making the whole exercise pointless.
I'll second that. I ran my own business for five years supporting Windows, primarily, and a custom-app of Linux for one client, though I was into Linux when Linux wasn't cool (circa '94-ish). And, having since become a corporate prostitute - paperwork of running my own business was too much hassle - working on Solaris apps, I've dumped Windows for Mac. The interesting thing, and I noticed this the other day, is that I don't have to be an expert to get the Mac to do what I want. It just does it - except for Numbers, which is really weird, coming from OpenOffice. I totally don't care what goes on under the hood, anymore, really; I don't have to. "Edit the registry"? What's that?
Call me a fanboi, if you want - though you're wrong - but I can focus on what I need to do, rather than the stupid platform. And installing software on a Mac is light years ahead of Linux - sorry, guys, I know that's sacrilege on this site. Drag-and-drop. Bing! Done.
Anyone know if the Hackintosh will support UMPCs? I use a MBP, but I'd like Mac OS on one of those itty-bitty PCs.
Considering that his voting record is almost identical to HRC's, and many pundits - granted, not necessarily a reliable indicator - have said that HRC's and BHO's policies are nearly the same, where does this notion come from?
> Then a guy who says "Never. Because crimes are only for the poor." as INSIGHTFUL, as if low socioeconomic status is where criminals are found. Far from truth, and far from insightful.
No, he's saying that only poor people get either a) busted, or b) prosecuted. The rich manage to skate. Witness the laughable "punishment" Paris Hilton suffered. An ordinary person would've actually had to do the time, with no special treatment. Need I mention OJ? (oops, just did...)
The guy left for a job as a teacher. To me, that doesn't sound like he was in it just for the money. It might have been for the adventure of it; you know, the "having a life" aspect. I can see it that way: imagine the stories he'll have when he comes back. I'm envious.
I have to wonder whether it was the language, or the libraries you were using.
I've done that - gone away for some time and come back - and I didn't find it all that bad.
You can take _any_ language and make a hash of it. Trust me - I see it all the time.

Just wait until they're, like, 18, and then see how hard it is to keep 'em caged, then. Oi...

First post in a long time that's caused me to laugh out loud. If I had mod points, this would be modded freakin' hilarious.
Evidence? Possibly not. Worthy of investigation? Definitely. I think that's the bigger point, here.
In all seriousness, how is this any different from the Republican fear mongering strategy?

I agree, the legal system is borked.

I _was_ a supermarket bagger, at one point, you insensitive clod.
What if they want that same power for themselves, if Obama wins?
