  1. For shame CmdrTaco on Best Presidential Candidate, Republicans · · Score: 1

Sure he may be an underdog and long-shot candidate, but I don't think it takes a rocket scientist, much less the webmaster of Slashdot, to realize that McCain and Romney are both douchebags, the likes of which have not been seen since Bush II.

Shame on you for limiting discussion to only Romeny and McCain. Ron Paul certainly deserves to be discussed, even if he is a longshot.

  3. PC's just aren't ready on OS Router Challenges Proprietary Networking · · Score: 1

I recently looked into building a PC based router after our NPE-300 board in our Cisco 7206VXR started flaking out.
While I'm sure it can be done for a T1, you sure as heck aren't going to build an effective DS3 or higher router on a PC.

The biggest problem right now is lack of PCI ATM adapters. I recently had CDW look into this for us. Apparently IBM used to make an ATM adapter, and HP currently does but is only supported for HPUX.

As much as the hacker in me would love to put together a DS3 capable, PC based router running Linux, without proper hardware and driver support, it's just not going to happen right now.

But hey, I hope I'm wrong... If someone can point me in the direction of an ATM adapter with Linux support, great ! I'll start hacking away... Until then, I'll sleep soundly at night knowing that if something blows up and it's an emergency situation, Cisco will ship out parts by start of next business day, in a worse case scenario.

We used ORBS, MAPS, Spamhaus and a few others, a while back, to simply deny connections to anyone in their database.

After John started complaining about some of his contacts not being able to reach him because of the blacklists, I quickly learned that RBL's are a "Bad Thing" (tm) when used to outright reject the sender.

Instead what we now do, is simply add headers to anything that is coming from an RBL site, and mark it as Spam.

That way, no mail is really lost, and people have gotten used to going going through their spam mailboxes from time to time...

Complaints from staff about lost emails have gone way down since.

  11. Our Backup Systems @ id Software on Making Users Back Up Important Data? · · Score: 1

Not centralizing shared data is just a bad idea.

We have two main file servers (RAID 5) here at the office. One for business files and general user storage. The second file server is used for whichever current project we are currently working on (read: DOOM). We use VSS as a centralized source code repository.

Things are backed up nightly to an offsite file server (1TB of disk space) connected to the office via a T1 connection, and every week, we back up critical files to DLT (Business files, contact database, the VSS directory, and all materials for our current project) which are then moved offsite to a secure storage facility. We rotate out and re-use tapes in 3 month blocks, so that we always have the last 3 months of data archived offsite.

The offsite backup server connected to the office via T1 has come in extremely handy from time to time. Artists sometimes overwrite their files and come begging for "last nights copy", which is a simple matter of just connecting to the server and pulling down the last backup that was made.

It would take some nasty catastrophe to completely wipe us out seeing as how we have full copies of our current work in two seperate places outside the office.

We have not had a catastrophic loss of data ever since I've come on board with id over 5 years ago.

... the fact that it doesn't run on Intel. If it ran on Intel, I'd probably be much more inclined to run it on one of my home systems or one of my office workstations, but I'm not a big fan of Mac hardware. I know Graeme Devine has been running it here in the office for a while and he loves it, but if it won't run on intel, I'm not really interested. I ended up installing OpenBSD on one of my office systems instead. Another concern I have is I'm wondering how responsive and open Apple will be in addressing security issues as they crop up. That's the one thing in dealing with an open OS such as OpenBSD that sort of spoils you. Knowing how much Apple has invested in OS X, this is probably a minor concern. A good, stable, supported off the shelf *nix for Mac's can only be a good thing IMO. My $0.02 for whatever it's worth. -Xian

  17. My views on Are Public WHOIS Records Necessary? · · Score: 1

From a network administrator's point of view, having access to WHOIS information is a valuable tool when trying to find contact information on websites that host warez, finding out who is the site contact when a machine has been compromised and is taking part in a DoS attack, or again, finding out who runs a site when a hack attempt is underway. I can see both sides of this argument, but from a purely selfish perspective, I think annonymizing WHOIS records is ultimately a bad thing, and I know it will make my job that much harder trying to track down information I take for granted right now. -Xian
