  1. Re:And a whole lot more... on Students Opting Away from high-tech Degrees? · · Score: 1

I think a BS CS program should have some info theory and of course "math" but the other stuff you list like computability theory sounds more appropriate for a MS or maybe BS honors program. But then I'm not a CS student so what do I know?

  2. more peace or fewer teens? on Why Kids Kill · · Score: 2

JonKatz says that the crime rate for teenagers is falling (from the high in the Eighties). I think part of the reason the total number of crimes committed by teens and also crime rates in general is because the size of that demographic group is decreasing. Men in the late-teens and twenties make up a huge proportion of the people committing crimes. If there are fewer people of that age, there will be fewer crimes committed. Obviously that doesn't explain it all but it's an important part to consider when politicians and law enforcement folks take credit for decreasing murder rates and other statistics.

  3. The Marines think Doom is training on The Public & The Internet: Open Forum · · Score: 1

How many read the Wired article about people in the Marine Corps. modifying Doom for training purposes? I think they made a good case for the limited way in which it could be useful to them. If these guys in Littleton were really playing like this, they took the idea a little far, regardless of the ultimate real-life actions.

Damn, someone should've done a remake for this year. They could have a line like "Keep your hands of my T1 you damn dirty mutants!"

It's not just that you can't fix a Microsoft problem yourself but how often you end up paying for a fix they provide either in a charged support call, charged patch, or having the fix rolled into an upgrade which is not free.

What's your definition of "full power"? Cybernet makes "Zero Footprint" PCs.

The processor maxes out at 233MHz Pentium MMX. With 128MB-EDO RAM and 6.4GB EIDE they charge $1172. There is no Windows tax, you buy that extra if you want it. In addition to the usual ports it has IR & USB, a built-in Realtek 10BT controller and an ISA slot.

It weighs 6.6lbs (3kg) but needs a 1lb. power brick. Most of the components seem to be standard, but old, desktop stuff rather than laptop. If they want to make PII, PIII models they'll probably have to use more laptop-style parts.

Remember, you have to click on the footprint to follow the link to register. If that URL doesn't change, all you have to do is go to that URL every day and submit your info. This would be all too easy to script with LWP.

The web log records will show the referer page and if there is none or if it's not the actual page of the day, they'll know you cheated.

Besides, you still have to find it the first time.
Someone's idea of using wget sounds good but you probably do have to visually check every .gif & .jpg then grep for the name to find the magic page.

  10. what teen/pre-teens are good for on Review:Wing Commander · · Score: 1
Chris Roberts in his Salon interview implies that Wing Commander, the movie, is better than Mortal Kombat, the movie because the game has more of a plot. I can't really say that Mortal Kombat was a bad movie. What made it for me was the 10-12 yr. old boys sitting in front of me who were totally stoked. They were having such a good time I couldn't help but have one too.

Mortal Kombat II just stunk. There could've been a theater full of pre-teen boys rocking out and I still wouldn't have enjoyed it.
