Animals - and apparently some humans - can function completely by taking short naps (10-20 mins) repeatedly throughout a 24 hour period without having an hours long sleep session. This phenomenon is termed polyphasic sleep.
It is also interesting to note that the practice of lucid dreaming (having conscious awareness during a dream while it is happening) happens during REM sleep - which increases in frequency and duration throughout the night (or sleeping time) - with the majority of REM sleep occurring with in the last couple of hours before waking.
Thus, one method for inducing lucidity involves waking up a couple of hours early and staying awake for an hour or so and then returning to sleep, quickly entering into the REM state. Napping is also very conducive to lucid dreaming and REM sleep.
This makes me wonder if people with the DEC2 gene would have a better chance of entering REM sleep (and thus have more opportunity to become lucid) than someone without the gene. Logic would seem to dicate so.
>"Blaming SSRI's is just as lazy and ignorant as blaming guns"
Nope. SSRI's directly affect your thoughts, emotions and behaviour. They change the person, like it or not.
Blaming a person's actions exclusively on SSRI's would be folly. But to state that they could influence someone's behaviour and attitude would be 100% true.
> "You still phrased yourself like the "just get over it" idiot crowd...with that homeopathic health nut feel...Positive thinking and exercise?"
Yes, how dare someone suggest that people could actually take responsibility for their own health and resolve their own issues - without resorting to nasty pharmacueticals! Geez, they must be complete nutter!

"What country is forced to borrow all of its currency from a central bank? Central banks aren't the source of money. If the US decides to print more money, they do that. They don't borrow it."
Nearly every country on the planet borrows it's currency - at interest - from central banks. In the United States, it is called the "Federal Reserve". It is a private central bank that has a monopoly over American currency creation. The U.S. government does not print more money if it needs it. That has not been allowed since the central banks took over America in 1913 via the Federal Reserve Act.
Here in Canada, the situation is bad but not quite as dire as that of the USA. Unlike the FED, the Bank of Canada does not have a monopoly on currency creation. It is estimated that about 5% of all Canadian currency is printed debt free.
The Bank of Canada (BOC) is not a government entity unto itself; it is a 'special' type of corporation set up to liason between the central banks and the Canadian government. The only member of the Federal government on the board of directors of the BOC is the deputy minister of finance, and he does not have the right to vote. The implications of this are obvious.
If you do not believe that countries borrow money at interest from central banks instead of printing their currency debt free, then you do not understand the central banking business.

Are real people actually getting killed in the game? There are all kinds of games that include violence, murder, theft, assault, robbery, drug dealing, etc.
People who are offended by this should really give their head a shake. There are actually real people in the world who are suffering as a result of real violence and terrorism. I wonder if they speak out about real world problems - or do they just bitch and whine about video games?
"people with AIDS should instead get some regular exercise..That's kind of what you said."
No, not at all. I was referring to depression, not AIDS. That's like comparing apples to donkey feet.
I was not suggesting that people with depression don't need help. I was saying that they don't need SSRI based anti-depressants. And I am speaking from personal experience here.
SSRI based anti-depressants, like so many other pharmecuetical products, do far more harm than good.
" I was on just a small dose for a while and felt like a very different person (not even really "better", just very "different"). It killed all my drive and made me a complacent zombie."
Ditto. Flushing those nasty pills was one of the best decisions I ever made!
Side effects of SSRI based anti-depressants - in addition to subduing the creative thought process and destroying the sex drive - include what has been termed emotional blunting.
In effect, blunting erodes one's ability to feel emotional response or empathy - such as being able to feel the 'warm fuzzies' in a relationship. This is a very dangerous road that can lead to sociopathy.
The stated side effects of SSRI based anti-depressants also include violent and/or suicidal behavior.
It is also interesting to note that the majority of mass shooters in the last 25 years have been under the influence of - or withdrawing from - SSRI based anti-depressents. John DeCamp, lawyer for the Columbine shooters, and author of The Franklin Cover-up, attempted to use the side effects of SSRI's as a defense. Details here.
Simply put, these drugs are terrible and should never have been allowed to be marketed.
Instead of reaching for pills, people with depression should instead get some regular exercise, a good diet and a positive attitude.

It's nice to see peaceful resolutions to problems instead of war.
Although little Bibi is fuming mad - and spewing more fear-mongering rhetoric than ever - whilst suggesting that Israel attack Iran anyway.
At least most of the world is still interested in peace.

My sensei always said "You don't grow old from the years; you grow old from inactivity".
I think that is very true. I try to stay active and people are always surprised to find out that i'm actually 10 years older than they thought.
Perhaps just staying out of Afghanistan altogether would be best.

No, I am not. I said that it was interesting to note, not that it caused their behavior - although they certainly could have contributed to it.
> "The emotional blunting helps take the edge off of the suicidal thoughts that come with major depression"
Initially, yes. And after prolonged usage it goes from "taking the edge off" to "wearing out" emotional empathy.
> "The side effects are better than killing yourself."
Personally, I would rather be dead than live without emotion. What is life if you can't feel happiness?

If you are interested in the subject of MK-Ultra, another interesting (and sad) story is that of Paul Bonacci.

"I was thinking mind control, MK-Ultra"
Yes, they (the CIA) did a lot of testing on unsuspecting patients here in Canada who went to see Dr. Ewan Cameron for depression.
LSD and other experimental drugs were used on patients without their knowledge or consent.
There is even a movie about it, called The Sleep Room.
I think the reason that ecstasy doesn't exist as a medication is because it actually works. At least for soldiers with PTSD.

Pills are not the answer. Especially these pills.
