Ah, I see. Hmm. I guess everyone else saw it that way too, but I wasn't really trying to mock us nerds. The post was my immediate reaction as a consumer, rather than a nerd. I guess in actual fact it's the nerds who get down and say "Well it's a tech product, not a furby".
Well, yeah. I know we're scornful of Vista on/. (I am. I can't stand it), but I often see Vista adverts on the TV, and a recent trip to a computer outlet showed Vista on every machine. Every TV ad for computers now shows Vista as a feature. I'd think it would have had a little more take-up.
Then again, I guess people will only really get it when they get a new computer. I guess that's a little counter-intuitive, that a product so aggressively marketed will only be taken up with a separate product that will be the main focus of the buyer.
I guess you're ridiculing me when you say "I get the joke", because I wasn't really joking. Still, mind explaining what you mean? I'm just curious
I don't really know why I was modded funny... >. I wasn't really trying to be at all. I'm a little hurt infact; perhaps there should be a "Wrong" option for modding?
This strikes me as low for a brand new windows OS. I'm not familiar with previous statistics, but I would have thought that sales would increase quickly after the release then slowly decrease. If it is at 2% now, I don't expect we'll get much more after this.
$20 says Microsoft will simply disable XP machines to boost sales.
Uhg. I thought slashdot had "pre" tags. I apologise.
Here's the real irony: it was leaked yesterday:

Thats totally insane, what on earth? If you bought a car with a 2 year warranty, changed your seat covers, and your engine packed up, would you void your warranty? Of course not! The two things are unrelated. I even RTFA, look...
'The keyboard is misbehaving when she begins to type quickly: keys are sticking and the space bar does not always respond when pressed.'
What? She accidentally built the 2.6.17-11 kernel with --secrete-orange-juice ?
That's why I use gnumeric. Can't stand OOo calc. Horrible piece of software. I absolutely love gnumeric, especially the graphing tool. I have real issues using the excel tool after using gnumeric, just because the gnumeric tool is so simple and intuitive
I avoid open office like the plague. More often than not I just write my work in HTML.
Bender: "I was having a horrible dream... 1s and 0s everywhere! And I thought I saw a 2!"
Fry: "It was just a dream bender, there's no such thing as 2."
From what I've seen this is all about nurture, and not nature. America's Christianity feeds itself, with a father instilling his faith in his son. I'm attending secondary school (high school) and the majority of us are atheists, and some of those who were previously christian or other faiths have become agnostic or more.
You can beleive something your childhood years without questioning it. If you fail to question it before you reach adulthood, the chances are its sunk into the way you reason. Hence, you'll be a little more stubborn.
'Regardless of how they formed, the exposed mantle provides scientists with a rare opportunity to study the Earth's rocky innards. Many attempts to drill deep into the planet barely get past the crust.'
Barely get past the crust? So they do get past the crust? Then how is exploring this bit of mantle different from exploring the parts we've drilled to?
If you were working in a shop, and someone walked in, picked up a coke, and walked to the counter to buy it, you'd serve him, right? But you'd still have the right not to serve him, if he's being anti-social or smoking in your shop or something. Something *you* don't agree with.
The right to free speech is also the right to not say something if you don't beleive what you're saying. This works on the same basis. It may be discriminating against a group, but that group exists because of human thought, not something you're born with. You can't just set up an anti-walmart group (or whatever) and expect everyone to bow to your right to free speech if it damages theirs.
A few things: You can't expect to run off a CD for day-to-day work. I never saw the point the ubuntu live CD really: If you need a recovery disk they should just make an ubuntu recovery disk. The ubuntu live cd is sparse and pretty much useless for anything but installing
But yeah, try ubuntu. Like a lot of linux distributions, you have to stick with it for a couple of weeks before things get easier than windows. Initially things will seem more difficult, but once you get used to it things are a lot easier than on windows.
The final point is that IRC is an essential part of Ubuntu. If you have any questions, even if you think they will be poorly received, ask anyway. So many people are put off ubuntu because they search for a package on the interwebs and try to compile it.
Thirdly, it eliminates intelligent debate. There are a whole range of subtle arguments and perspectives on the issues being petitioned about, but the system reduces it down to a "yes" or "unknown" perspective, which is worthless. A large Slashdot style debating site would be far more useful and effective.
Intelligent debate has long gone from the UK. Ever heard "Today In Parliament"? They quarrel like children about everyones little hiccups. There isn't a single thread of intelligent debate left in the house of commons. This is why I'd never vote conservative. Sure they're policies are okay, but I don't want my country to be run by bullies. If you totally ignore privacy and the iraq war (I know I know, big things to ignore) blair has done okay. He'll be sorely missed by the rest of the labour party, brown is just a grunting old man, at least Blair had charisma and some sense.
Good sir, you have a point. Units by themselves are perfectly fine, but when they play with other laws/units, thats when its tricky. For example, us humans are cursed with 10 fingers. 16, and it would have made computing a lot easier, but thats another matter. A lot of old numbers resolved around a dozen, a number still used today with inches and feet. Thats the Egyptions' fault, they counted finger joints. The fact is we work almost entirely in base 10. We still say 12 inches, and not C inches.
So firstly, it makes life easier (from a person who's had to work in both units) to have a unified system which follows one particular base, in this case base 10.
Heres my second point. When imperial units were defined, they were defined with things deemed important in the day. I read somewhere that a 12th of an inch is roughly the same size as a grain of corn. That doesn't help when it comes to fluid dynamics, etc, which effect a lot of things we see today, rather than corn.
Now, I haven't got any physics qualifications, but I remember in class when we were learning the equations for things under the influence of gravity etc. There was a very nice equation that connected things like density, mass, speed, etc. It didn't have any funny, long numbers in it. It was simple. I actually said to my teacher "are you sure? how could it all line up like that?" and he said "well thats how they defined the units".
So yes, inches, gallons, etc is a standard. But its one based on something which is very man-made and useless when it comes to application. Its a well defined standard and one which I know is used a lot in the USA for things which don't really require lots of conversions and 0.45 feet etc...
Were you listening to the same radio station I was last night?
The issue is that they are small and discreet enough for most people to throw in the trash. Workers will easily get mercury on em, and the mercury will seep into the ground, which won't be very good. That stuff as a habit of giving everything cancer!
They spoke to a guy who ran the only recycling business for these things in a state (I can't remember which). He basically said people aren't natural recyclers, and the issue with the new bulbs is they need to be recycled, its not just helping mother earth, its actually a huge extreme-short-term risk for humans.

Wait, the general public are now unwashed? Things must have changed since I last visited slashdot...

I'm surprised they even got through high school. You have to have some morals to do that.

You should be working for Microsoft, my good man.
"Welcome to the social" pfft.
Well think of it this way:

You are attempting to flog an old horse. Cancel or Allow?
Those three words do not sit well next to eachother.
Thats like saying "Well you were the one who pressed the on button! We can't be held responsible for that!"
