Interesting timing as the German Minister of the Interior has reissued a report recommending that German Federal Depts use open source software.

This report was first released last March but was quickly pulled after preasure from Microsoft. A massive letter writing campagn has convinced the minister to rerelease it.

Personally I've never liked Office, but I don't think my like or dislike for a product should influence this discusison. Unfortunately your dislike for a product has blinded you to the reality of the industry.

Hey man, wake up. If you have not noticed, Microsoft just went through a two year antitrust court case and lost. The findings of fact are now in the books forever. Any appeal might change the penalties but the fact is that Microsoft used illegal business practices to bone the consumers. Note that there are now 135 civil law suits pending against them.

Oh, and I don't know what difference restrictions will make. Even if they were to survive the appellate court.

Do you know that originally some of the states wanted the case to be about the way Microsoft used the bundling of Word with Excel to be the main focus of the case? Corel and Lotus have not sued yet but they would have a hell of a good case especially now that most of the work has been done in this trial.

When the restricitons come into play, other companies like Corel will have a chance to win contracts based on the merits of their product as the companies will not have to worry about Microsoft taking revenge against them.

  10. Re:Word for Lawyers on Why Can't We Reverse Engineer .DOC? · · Score: 1
There is a reason why so many lawyers use WordPerfect instead of MS Word. Word does not do the things they need. For example, Word's word count does not include footnotes in the count. Since certain submissions to courts have a maximum word count which include footnotes, they have to have a clerk manually count the words to make sure it does not exceed the maximum length. Some courts refuse to accept briefs created in MS Word due to this problem.

Having different versions and revisions included in a file not only makes for a bloated file size but could also give the opposition insight that you do not want to give them.

There is one thing that WordPerfect does superbly is creat tables of authourities which word sucks at.

The DoJ just bought 55,000 seats of WordPerfect and even the ruling against MS was created in WordPerfect.

Conversion problems arise when you have complex documents with graphics, tables charts etc. Corel's conversion is not bad but still requires some minor editing. Lawyers love to receive files in doc format since they can go in and see the previous revisions of offers etc.

BTW remember when Office 97 came out and could not save to an Office 95 .doc format? It actually saved to RTF but gave a .doc extension. Corel's WP could save to the real Office 95 .doc which made it more MS compatable than MS was.

We do not need advanced technology to save lives. We just have to have the political will to stand up to the auto companies and demand that the road slaughter stops.

How many years did it take to get even seat belts/safety glass in cars? After people started using them lives were saved. Princess Diana might be alive today if she had worn her seat belt. She was in a very expensive Mercedes with all the latest safety equipment. The only person to survive the crash was the bodyguard who was wearing his seat belt. What was the cause of the crash? A drunk driver in an overpowered car. BTW air bags did not help in this crash. They are expensive and have probably killed more kids and short people than would have been saved with seat belts alone.

It is ironic that if a plan or train crashes, there is a big investigation and whole fleets are grounded until the problem is fixed yet flying/rail are the two safest methods of travel. The auto companies on the other hand are allowed to produce vehicles that are inherently dangerous. This is shown about the number of auto fatalities that kill more people in a long weekend then all the air planes crashes in a year.

The auto companies could make a safe car but would anyone buy it? They would have to if there were stricter govt regulations. Right now the government pays lip service to safety.

Here are some simple solutions that would save 10,000 lives a year:

If the govt was serious about safety, they would not allow cars on the road that can do 150mph when the speed limit is 60mph.

Put real bumpers at a standard height on all vehicles.

Make breath analysers mandatary to start a car or at least on known impaired drivers.

Annual drivers test for anyone over 65.

The other best solution for reducing fatalities is divided highways. Expensive but saves head on collisions.

The question is do people have an alternative to Microsoft? The answer is a resounding yes! Once Microsoft cannot dictate terms to OEMs you will see more PCs come bundled with other suites. Then the people can decide with their wallets if they want to spend the extra $500 for MS Office. The authors of the articles said at the beginning that a business needed the file format compatibility and noone else could provide it. Much later they quoted the American Bar Association having certified Corel WP Office suite as being 100% compatible with Word/Excel.

In many ways Quatro Pro is superior to Excel. QP can have 1,000,000 rows per worksheet while Excel is a fraction of that. I can blocl off some numbers and get descriptive stats in QP with two mouse clicks. Excel well I still cant see how to do it. WordPerfect has real time previews and reveal codes. MS Word formats it the way it thinks it should look, not the way you want it.

The big selling points for Corel are features, compatibility and low cost. It is also available in Linux. I have been using it for months now and have had no problems. Lots of customer satisfaction surveys(including PC Mag) have shown that while more people use MS Office, they are not very satisfied with it while those who use Corel WPO are very satisified(including 1 million lawyers). Many lawyer offices are switching to Linux/WPO and are saving a ton of money by not having to upgrade older PCs and lower TCO.

    From today's wire service:

A young Canadian boy is being held in Miami today by a group of Canadian expatriates who refuse to let him be returned to his father in Canada.

The boy, one Ernie MacDougal, was visiting Disney World with his mother when she fell out of the ride on Splash Mountain. After what some say is a miraculous survival aided by members of the Miami Dolphins, he reached the end of the ride, where he was interviewed by Disney security. Asked repeatedly where he was from, he kept answering 'Saskatoon Saskatchewan'. Taking this as the babblings of delirium, the boy was turned over to Dr. Phil McCracken, the physician on duty at the park at that time.

As luck would have it, Dr. McCracken is a Canadian who had himself fled the tyranny of having the Canadian government tell him how to run his medical practice, and had come to the United States in hopes of having large publicly traded corporations tell him how to run his medical practice.

Recognizing that the boy was a fellow countryman, his family swept the boy away to their home in Miami and called the media to announce their intention to prevent the boy from being returned to a country where he could not be free to take a gun to school to defend himself against the other 6 year old kids with guns.

Other Canadian expatriates have formed a human shield around the house, linking arms and shouting 'Hell no, he won't go, eh'. The boy's father in Saskatoon has issued a public demand for his return, but as yet has shown no sign of willingness to travel to Miami. State department experts on Canada believe that he is not allowed to leave Canada until he manages to complete a multipage passport application in flawless French.

Ironically, the boy's mother survived her fall but was later found shot in the Disney parking lot, where muggers mistook her for a German tourist.
