Developing Countries to Benefit From Collaboration Among the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Corel Corporation and Rebel.com

Ottawa, Canada -- August 10, 1999-- Two Canadian information technology (IT) corporations announced today that they are donating computer software, hardware and services worth over a million dollars to UNDP's Sustainable Development Networking Programme (SDNP), an initiative born of the Earth Summit that helps developing countries gain access to information on the environment and sustainable development through local and regional information networks. The donation will help strengthen computer and internet capacity in developing countries where SDNP operates. The two corporations are Corel Corporation, an internationally recognized developer of award-winning graphics and business productivity applications, and Rebel.com, a leading manufacturer of computer appliances and thin servers using Linux, UNIX and Intel platforms. The SDNP supports information networking programmes in some 40 developing countries and trains nationals to operate and participate in them. The contributions by Corel Corporation and Rebel.com will strengthen the information and networking systems in these countries, and expand the contribution SDNP makes at the local level -- whether it be in helping to quickly access information on disaster relief in Honduras in the wake of Hurricane Mitch or finding rare matching blood types to save lives in rural Pakistan. Beginning this month, Rebel.com will provide their Linux-based NetWinder group servers to a number of local SDNP programmes, which will facilitate the use of the Internet and intranets in these countries. "Participation in this initiative reinforces Rebel.com's role in the international field," said Michael Mansfield, president of Rebel.com. "It is also very rewarding to know that our technology is assisting in making a positive impact on sustainable development while we help to provide cutting edge information technology to developing countries. " Corel Corporation will provide Corel® WordPerfect® Suite 8 for Linux® in several languages to the 40 developing countries along with Corel's Linux distribution (presently in development); and the WordPerfect® Office for LINUX® suite, which is expected to be available in early 2000. "It gives us great pleasure to bring our state-of-the-art technology to these developing countries and to aid in their sustainable development efforts," said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer of Corel Corporation. Eimi Watanabe, Director of UNDP's Bureau for Development Policy, underscored the importance of such partnerships between UNDP and the private sector. "The global challenges we face in promoting development that is sustainable and more equitable are immense," she said. "Access to IT can make a significant difference. This kind of public-private collaboration can trigger mobilization for change at the individual, community, national and international levels."

You do not need the CD-R if you are already running Linux. Use the o loop command. One of you techies can post the proper syntax. It was on a previous discussion. Intial comments is that it is not bad but can use improvement. For a version 1.0 I guess it is ok. Dont complain about what they left out as you can use 'update - aks Corel package manager' to download everything else you need. Cheers

They left out Netscape Communicator, Acrobat Reader, and an "Instant Messenger - ICQ compatible client' to keep the download to a resonable size. Even so it is still 318 megs. Once you have the basic installation going you can use 'update' aka Corel package manger to download any other packages you want.

  5. Re:Different Problems -- Is Fusion a Solution? on Combining New/Old Approaches for Nuclear Fusion · · Score: 1

Fusion is the holy grail of energy. No radioactive/toxic waste, and uses hydrogen(water) for fuel. It would be truely clean power. Once the physics get worked out, you could have mini power plants the size of a refrigerator. Remember 'Back to the Future' with the Delorean time machine powered by a bread-maker sized 'Mr Fusion'. Some conspiracy thery types think that the big oil companies are blocking fusion research. That would be short sighted since there are so many other more valuable things we could be using our non renewable hydrocarbon reserves for rather than burning them up as fuel. A $20 barrel of crude can be turned into several million garbage bags for example or a ton of nondairy coffee creamer. Imagine a fusion powered space plane that lifts into orbit slowly without the need for huge boosters? It would open up the solar system or even the stars for exploration etc etc. No energy wars over Kuwait. We need fusion. Once we get it the world will be a safer, cleaner healthier place to live.

  6. How did they get this far so fast? on Corel Wordperfect Office 2000 for Linux Beta Test · · Score: 1

I was wondering how Corel ported all these major league programs(WP, Quatro, Paradox, Presentations, Central etc) to Linux in such a realativly short time? WP9 I can see since they already had WP8 for Linux. Even then WP9 had a lengthy beta developement before it was released last summer. The other presumably had to be done from scratch. I know they have been big contributers to WINE and Wine lib but from all accounts WINE is still very much in the alpha stages. Someone mentioned that Inprise now has a strategic alliance with Corel. Inprise also had investment from Microsoft and a contract to develop some RAD developer's tools. Could they have a set of WIN APIs and or source code and could they have passed this on to Corel? Far fetched but even with 600 software engineers, getting a full office suite ported to Linux in under a year is quite an accomplishment when notepad still crashes under WINE. Any comments?

Since Corel is releasing its Linux distro for free download on 15 Nov when officialy debuted at Comdex, I imagine that further OEM deals will be announced shortly after. Isn't odd that this is happening just as the judge is about to rule on the DOJ/Microsoft case? I don't think Linux will ever replace Windows(soon) but Microsoft can now point to Corel and say that here is a company that is shipping 20 million + copies of an alternative OS with a full suite of applications. Not really a threat but the mere appearance of competion could help Microsoft.
