  1. Voting Records != Accountability on FTC and JD Holding Hearings on IP · · Score: 2, Interesting

Even when votes are properly recorded the voting record itself is attached to the bill as a static text document. There are many votes and votes on similar bills. It is impossible for the average person to sift through all the bills and find out the voting record of their elected officials. The only sane way to get this information is to look at congressional watchdog groups that will tally votes and keep a proper database of voting records, but even this account may not be accurate as usually these groups have a bias or only focus on one type of legislation.

Last year there was a bill that would have created an online database of congressional voting. This bill failed, good luck finding out what the bill number was or who voted against it.

I emailed CustomerService@performanceinc.com (go go spamharvester) about it and they said they would remove me from their marketing lists(even though it was clear they had already sold my address). But they didnt appologize for selling my address. Anyway I ended up deleting the performance bike address so I wont be bothered by their spammers and I will never buy anything from them again.

hmmmm... performancebikesucks.org is available though it seems performancebikesucks.com is owned by performancebike.... they must know they suck.

These things aren't build to last, they don't look good, and nobody cares! They drive their suv out to their suburban home and sit on their asses in front of the tv. art!? whats that?! Shakespeare in love playing on the movie channel?

The general lack of quality in current software apps is a reflection of our society. Quality Craftsmanship is a thing of the past, mass production is where its at. Businesses and managers are pressured to bring products and services to market As Soon As Possible. Process design, peer review, and quality control of central components fall by the wayside as new useless features are added willy nilly in an effort to bolster sales. I try to write good software, but without proper project planning there is never enough time or thought allowed to enter the process. Sometimes I feel like writing quality commercial software is like trying to swim upstream.

I have written some good tools that are used by many of our applications to quickly build linked customizable html displays of database data. I used another project as an excuse to build the tools. No time in the workplan for that! And have never been allowed time update and extend the tools even though it would clearly be beneficial and save time for many other programmers. Projects could be created with object oriented reusable code and modules well planed, organized, optimized etc, but clean code doesn't sell.

  6. Everything, unfortunately. on Borders Nixes Face Recognition · · Score: 1

Borders said they were using this to find known shoplifters. They do this by taking pictures of every person that walks in the store and comparing their face metrics with a database. There is no way to know how long people pictures stay in the database or that they are not becoming part of the database as they link this information with other customer information(borders preferred customer cards? or Amazon database information.) They could then create a profile of your purchases, visit frequency, credit history and coordinate this with any other information they can get from other "partner" companies like doubleclick.

Borders does not have to serve everyone, especially freedom/privacy loving freaks like me. Before they could bar me from entry I wrote them a nice little email and let them know that they could kiss my business goodbye if they implemented this system.

If borders does not have a right to collect and record this information without informing people who enter their store. A retailer must accept cash in return for goods and services without requiring additional information. Its legal tender. They have to take it. There are laws against recording, archiving and coordinating credit card information. Traditionally consumers have been afforded a certain level of privacy when making purchases. Because it is technologically feasible to track individual shoppers does not mean that it is ethical or even legal.
