  1. I don't like using cds or nocd patches on Blizzard Patches No-CD Support Into Warcraft III · · Score: 0

As I've got several hundred games (originals), as well as several tb of space in my computer, I just install games when I feel like it and play them without using nocd patches or having to get the disks out again...

How do I do that you ask? Oh - a nice little program I bought several years ago called GameJackal. It builds up a "cache" of the cd the first time you run the game, then you just pop out the cd and play happily without it in future.

It's not perfect, but as it does almost every game over 6 months old without any problems, and only a few problems with newer ones (till it's updated etc) I'm quite happy... Even means I can run game updates without having to uninstall nocd patches and find new ones...

  2. Those were the aliens you know... on Aftermath of Distant Planetary Collision? · · Score: 1, Funny

...170 years ago we sent out an accidental radio signal - 30 years before we discovered what radio was. Unfortunately those aliens had their own version of SETI (called TTFA - Trying To Find Aliens), which picked up the signal. Due to their recent invention of the internet and the subsequent panic over "proof" of alien life they panicked and sadly ended wiping themselves out in a nuclear war. The planet itself survives as a nuclear wasteground, still too hot to support life, but now noticeable by the very planet that accidentally caused it's destruction all that time ago...

  4. Re:Cheap games would be nice but... on EA Boss Says Games Too Expensive · · Score: 0

Try some of the cheap games, they can be very good - and the gameplay is what makes the game. If you really think that spending thousands of dollars on graphics makes a game then it's your choice whether to buy it or not.

One of my favorites is Darwinia (http://www.darwinia.co.uk/), the gameplay makes it pretty unique, and it costs almost nothing compared to these expensive ones.

  6. I like bits from them all... on D&D Fourth Edition Books To Be Released in June · · Score: 0

...and am hoping that they finally get the balance right.

I'm currently using the 3.5 rules as a basis for a LARP system (started last month, and running a one-day event once every month) in London, UK. It's somewhat strange taking the complexity of D&D and trying to make it work in the simplicity of LARP... Or at least the way I'm trying to keep the LARP system simple ;-)

For anyone who doesn't know - LARP = Live Action Role-Play. We go out and hit each other with latex weapons and do everything that tabletop gamers do, just in person... And with less explosions...

  7. Why use discs?? on Holographic Storage Slated to Hit Market This Fall · · Score: 0

As it says in the article it doesn't need to be disc shaped (read the bit about replacing flash ram) - so why are they bothering to do something the same size/shape as a normal cd??

Wouldn't it be nicer to do it as something the same size/shape as a credit card that could fit in a 3.5" bay - with space left over. Get it to a decent small size, large enough to be handy and not easily lost, but small enough that it's not bulky, then get it into the open...

Ok, it might not be able to store 600 gigs on a credit card sized area, but should be able to do 3-400 gigs easily, and I for one would be a lot more interested...

Still couldn't afford it though ;-)

  8. Lemmings, Ambermoon and Captive on Top 10 'Most Influential' Amiga Games · · Score: 0

Lemmings first - anyone fancy playing it in your browser? Try DHTML Lemmings - try not to kill it ;-)

Thalion went a long time ago, but released all of their stuff for the public - one of my favorites was the unfinished (in english at least) Ambermoon - an epic RPG - that, and many more, available on the Thalion Webshrine - break out your amiga emulators ;-)

Finally - one of my favorite games of all time was Captive. Sadly the sequel lost some of it's fun for science (to my mind) - it's another RPG, with you controlling a group of 4 droids. The intro music was brilliant - get it here, for a screenshot and a better description read the wikipedia entry. It is notable in that it had 65536 levels - each one having a *lot* of planets to explore... If you'd like to see a tribute to it appear, go check out the FreeCap Project - they need all the help they can get :-)

  9. So when will the US pay *us* back? on China Slams US Piracy Complaint · · Score: 1, Flamebait

Considering how long America refused to recognise the copyright of other countries, in fact it's not even 20 years since they started, does that mean we all get a big apology and a huge payout for the lost billions (after inflation) that their bigotry has cost??

    I thought not...

  10. Could do with improving... on Is There Anything Wrong With The PSP? · · Score: 1

Open it up to homebrew - make it an option in the settings so homebrew doesn't work by default, but at the same time you don't need to do anything more than go into the settings to (potentially) open up your PSP to homebrew stuff - and if you can put it on a memory stick then surely you can do that...

Change the expansion adapter to be compatible with the iPod - I'm not as bothered about this, but a short adapter cable to let me use any iPod speakers or other expansions, and the added benefit of companies (and individuals) hardware hacking the output (and input?) would benefit everybody.

Do a touchscreen - not necessarily as a new PSP, but as an expansion that plugs in the top (so you've also got somewhere to store the stylus), and have OS supported "if it's there then use it, otherwise use the joystick as an analog device" functions.

Do a tilt detection module (*not* motion detection - the thought of a PSP hitting my head is painful) - same sort of functions as above...

Release games on memory stick - the drive is a *real* power drain...
