It's what has always happened throughout history when a government grows too large and powerful. But of course, anyone suggesting smaller government in either nation is painted as a lunatic-fringe extremist that hates the poor, and is probably a racist to boot.
It is not the size of government, but what they're pushing. Here in Canada we now have a government that totally believes in smaller government so what they're doing is getting rid of the parts of the government that protects people while pushing a totalitarian state. A small government can still have enough power to stomp on its citizens faces while a large government can be there to help its citizens and protect their rights.
Those members of society that aren't liked still have their rights arbitrarily removed by the legislature, eg bill of attainder. The felons who lose basic rights for life, not as part of their sentencing, but due to act of congress. People convicted of sex crimes really lose rights, once again not because a judge made an order as part of sentencing but because Congress passed a law. Especially removing the right to vote means that people convicted of an unjust law can't even vote to change it.
You're getting mixed up. The man sentenced to death in Iran is for the crime of Apostasy, leaving Islam. Christians and Jews have quite a few rights under the Koran though they are still second class citizens. A Muslim male is allowed to marry a Christian unlike a polytheist though a Muslim female is not allowed to marry a non-Muslim. Christians aren't allowed to inherit from a Muslim and while not allowed to be a ruler they are allowed to be an adviser. Taxes and stuff are also different. It wasn't that long ago that Christianity practiced many of these same backwards policies and hopefully Islam will grow as Christianity has and perhaps Christianity will keep growing.
Of course they don't believe Jesus was the son of God. Kind of contradictory to the 10 commandants and the rest of the Torah. Instead they believe that Jesus was a great prophet who God talked to and the Christians version of the Gospels is corrupted. Not a surprising believe considerng the early history of the Church when the most ruthless Christians killed off the other sects such as those who didn't believe that Jesus was the son of God. They also believe in their own version of the Torah, called Tawrat (the Gospels are called Injil and contain the Holy word of God as He gave to Jesus) and the Zabur (Book of David, roughly corresponding to the Psalms). This is why true Muslims don't consider Jews or Christians to be Infidels, but rather People of the Book. They are not supposed to kill Christians just like Christians aren't supposed to kill anyone. Of course all these religions, especially Christianity, have become corrupted, eg how many Christians worship money and power and would happily kill Christ if he came back.
Islam even believes in Christ. They just believe that he was a great prophet. When 3 religions have the same book it is fair to say that they believe in the same God that that book talks about even if they interpret it differently. It's not like the Bible is actually the word of God. If it was it would have showed up world wide in every culture and there would be very little argument about it.
The Muslims believe in Christ, they just believe he was a great prophet, not an incarnation of God. Judaism believes that the savior hasn't shown up yet. They're all forks of the same religion. Just some of the forks are more extreme. And all of them are the most ruthless, having killed off any competition. Lots of Christians at the beginning didn't believe in the trinity and some questioned Christs godhood. The trinity lovers teamed up with the Romans and killed the others off. The Muslims have shown a lot of ruthlessness as well in getting to where they are now.
Nothing wrong with teaching all the creationism myths along side evolution. Just don't stick to the various offshoots of Judaism. The Hindi have an interesting creation myth, so did the ancient Greeks as well as some of the native Americans and most other primitive people. I'm quite happy with my son being taught what was the local religion, they generally talk about why they believe what they do and the reasons are pretty good, at least for a people with no writing, no science and living close to the land. They're also very aware that most of their old believes have been superseded by current knowledge but the basic tenant of respect is still important
I haven't heard anything about the omnibus crime bill not going through which is more what I was talking about. Unluckily this is taking attention from the other horrible laws that are on the table. The crime laws and the copyright laws for example.
The article is about a government that is any thing but liberal. Probably closest to tea party as anything. They are cutting taxes but are still increasing spending. They pissed away the government surplus by cutting taxes and increasing spending and are increasing government size in the negative areas. Crime is at a 50 year low so they're building prisons like crazy, passing new laws to make previous legal things illegal and totally want to stop dissent no matter how much it costs.
Vic Toews, the minister responsible for this, had a seven year affair with his baby sitter (then impregnated another young woman). He obviously thinks the rest of us has his morals.
There was a lot of money to be made by revolting and the media was on the side of that money. It's the opposite now. The important thing now is the media is on the governments side.
I swear lobbyists put stuff like "section 34" in as a lighting rod for activists.
Later on they can drop this provision as a "compromise" to appease the opponents.
While we're arguing about this, they're passing the crime bill that even the right wing Texans told them is stupid. The new copyright bill, implementing ACTA and Sopa and who knows what else. Overwhelm us at the beginning of their mandate, make a small compromise, improve things slightly at the end of their mandate.
There are laws that are supposed to stop Google from invading our (Canadians) privacy. While there are also laws to stop the government from invading our privacy, it is very easy to change them by passing a new Online Surveillance Bill. We also have way fewer checks and balances then the USA, basically the government is a dictatorship for up to 5 years when the ruling party has the majority of parliamentary seats.
Google etc I can stop using any time without much effort, at that I've already got extensions installed to stop much of their data gathering. The Canadian government or as they like to now call themselves, Harper's Government, with a majority, has up to 5 years in which they have a dictatorship. They have way more power then the American government has. They can even invoke the not withstanding clause of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and take away most basic civil rights. The Supreme court rules against this invasion of privacy, well they can override (for 5 years) our right not to be unreasonably searched, which our Supreme Court has interpreted as a Right to Privacy. They're also appointing new Supreme Court Justices who are more friendly to their right wing views.
They were talking about the latest inflation report (Canadian but should be similar) on the radio yesterday. I didn't take notes but the gist of it was inflation was about 2% but then they started listing things. Lots of food items like bread had gone up 8-10%. Gasoline was up quite a bit along with electricity and housing. Natural gas was actually down quite a bit. Basically it sounded like all the basic stuff that I pretty well need had gone up close to 10% while stuff that I can't afford anyways has been stable or gone down.
The gas companies will take advantage of stuff like this. Where I live (BC) gas is about $1.23 per litre to the east and $1.25 to the west. The stations to the west have an extra 12 cents transit tax (plus 5% tax on the tax) added to the pump price yet the stations to the east claim that they're only making a couple of cents a litre profit and the rest is taxes or raw price. They even have nice pie charts on the pumps showing the taxes etc. Also when the transit tax went up, gas went up everywhere.
That makes more sense but still, at least here, minimum wage is so low and tips are supposed to supplement your earnings being a bonus that it really seems your sons employer is taking advantage of him and I guess that's the norm there, at least in the restaurant business.
You guys need some serious sales tax reform. Here in Canada there is the Federal GST (5%), the Provincial sales tax (7% here, varies on province) with I believe most of the provinces now having a harmonized sales tax that the feds collect and distribute the provinces portion back. The cities and such do add extra things like the gas tax which is included in the price at the pump. To the west of me there is an extra 12% gas tax so locally often gas is a couple of cents cheaper here and the gas companies make extra profit.
What happens on the days when there is close to no business? When my sister was working in the restaurant business she said that the only good days tip wise was the weekends due to lack of business during the week. Tipping here is about the same rate and it is generally excepted that you should always tip and tips are supposed to be reported as income.
Don't they have minimum wage laws in the States? Things are similar here in Canada but the server still has to be paid at least minimum wage along with basic benefits (which is often worked around by hiring part time workers) such as unemployment insurance (now called employment insurance) and Canada Pension Plan.

So you think if someone wants to shit in the drinking water, it would be wrong to force them to stop?

Sadly it seems the default of modern man, eg since agriculture was invented, is that the haves only care about having more, fuck the consequences.

This Canadian government has plans to beat you at that game. Little harder with an order of less population to do it with but they're going to try.

The government can charge you with something disgusting like raping babies, then drop the charges. What will that do to your reputation?

Your constitution does have an amending process. Be nice if they used it, then the States could decide.
