Mr. Sample is certainly correct in stating that the hackers could have appeared from anywhere. But it is rather suspicious that such an attack which COULD have originated in China would occur at the height of a Sino-US diplomatic crisis. I don't know who did this, but if it was me then China would be the perfect place to run this through since we are having problems with them now. Some NSA or FBI leader quik to take credit for solving the crime see's China come across as a location that part of the attack originates at and BANG that must be it!! Leaving me hi and dry, and all our resources directed at China, and when they cannot solve it they blame it on China not cooperating. I do not crack nor condone cracking.

What is funnier, that the post didn't answer the questions.... or that they all got modded up?

If he knows the IP. Unlike Cable I have yet to find a DSL connection where using network neiborhood will show me all the shares on my block. Yes it's not much, but it stops the 12 year old down the street from thinking he is a 1337 H4X0R or whatever by messing with my files. Also is it still true that most Cable companies will not let you use NAT? I know in my area you can't, and the Cable company won't sell me the 12+ IPs I would need even if I did want to pay for all of them. So there is no legal way I could get online.

I got the same urge a few months ago and built almost exactly what you want. One thing I would definitely suggest is Creative SoundBlaster Live Platinum.... With this I was able to use the digital out to run it directly into my stereo receiver. And the remote is worth the price alone, the software rocks and can run the whole system without a keyboard or mouse this is no exaggeration. I want to play a CD, just hit the play button. I installed WinAMP and the software doesn't even need to be told it just is like "I can do that!". DVDs? "I can do that!". Want to configure it to start and run any other programs you have? Well just tell it where it is and what to do. Second hint, use a video card with a Video In as well as Video Out port this opens all sort of possibilities, you can almost make your own Tivo. As hated as this is on /. I use Windows on it; my choice was due to the wide range of hardware drivers and software (SoundBlaster IR software runs on windows and I was unable to find anything else as useful). I also put my CD burner in it but that is a personal decision you may not want. Hardware is only a 400mhz K6-2 with 128 megs of RAM, this seems to do just fine though I'm sure I will upgrade it one of these days. Mine is an Asus P5A motherboard and an ATI rage pro video card. You should be able to find a 2U case to hold all this; I use a mini tower myself though a pizza box style under the monitor case will also work very well. One last hint, if you have a closed TV Cabinet be prepared to drill holes and maybe mount fans in the back. Also we leave the door open whenever the box is on, otherwise it can get hot enough to set the temperature alarm on the motherboard off.

Is it just me or is this like saying If I kill someone, then tell the world I killed someone that no one has the right to be upset because you can't find the body? If Sony makes a claim it is based on GPLed code and then breaks the GPL licensing they should expect developers to be upset. And this is not like a an open source developer claiming a microsoft product is based on GPL code, this is Sony itself claiming the program is GPL code based.Either they are breaking the GPL or they are false advertising by claiming there program is based on a GPLed program and trying to mislead customers..... Which is worse? I do agree sony needs to be given a chance to fix their mistake, but they are not off the hook all together. And yes this story is hearsay so I wouldn't say that that developers stance is Sony's also, but with the 2 facts that: It is claimed to be based on GPL code by the company who released it. And there is no source code available for download (someone does need to ask for it) we have enough to be upset about a possible violation.
