You want to know how you pay for it? I'll tell you..... -your isp rents t1's t3's, etc from the phone company -those lines are shared between web access, email, news, etc. -spammer floods your isp's mail server.... that slows down their network.... if too much spam comes in the users can start being affected
make the spammers pay either 1/2 of the total cost of maintaining the spammed ISP's network for 1 or 2 years or for every $1 spent by the ISP to maintain its network the spammer must give the ISP $1-$5 for 6 monthes to a year. If the spammer can't/won't pay it then put them in jail for 6 monthes, put a felony charge on their record and put their company's name on an untrustworthy business list run by a group like the BBB
"In capitalism, man exploits man. In socialism, it's exactly the opposite." At least in a free market capitalist system, the working class doesn't have to worry about their employer shooting them for not coming to work. A bullet through the head for failure to come to work was not uncommon in the USSR. And yes I know the soviets were socialists, not communists.
I believe you are wrong about 80,000,000.... my understanding is that by now it is around 100,000,000. Anyway your point is a good one, communism is evil and in fact OSS is very capitalist. Anyone who thinks that it is based on "ideal communism" should read alan cox's article on OSS on osopinion!
The common man isn't really in control of his destiny in terms of politics because until the old boy network we know as the republicratic party is broken up, lower and middle class candidates will not exist
How about we just replace the republicrats with a 3 party system devided evenly between the libertarian, reform and green parties. Get those commie and fascist pigs out of office and we will watch the common man be able to take control of his destiny. BTW one of the interesting differences between "conservatives" in the US and libertarians is that libertarians believe that workers have the right to market their labor to businesses just like businesses have a right to market their products to the public.
I think it is cool.... really cool that there will be potentially 1.2 billion new linux users... but is this the kind of publicity we need? Afterall aren't those of us that support OSS already called communists by the idiots who don't understand that OSS makes good business sense? This makes me wonder what kind of future linux will have because whatever distro is the official one will get unbelievable power. Let's just hope that the chinese choose either debian or slackware if they choose to have only 1 official linux distro. BTW I am using redhat if anyone cares so it's not like I am an advocate of debian or slackware.
Let's make our own. Why the hell should we use a protocol which will let the scum of the earth track our net usage? I say we should get a competing group together to make an ipv6 that won't kill privacy.
I showed my parents RH6.X and COL 2.3 and they said that when they get a new comp they want to use Linux... and they are total newbies. As far as they are concerned it is no big deal to relearn lots of stuff.... BTW they really liked KDE. No offense, but KDE is more appealing to newbies. Just my $.02
You think that they are running behind schedule? Well let's see how fast Microsoft could rewrite COM, IE, a new plug-in architecture, messaging client, email/news software and a wysiwyg editor. All for MacOS X, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, OpenVMS, BeOS, MacOS classic and for other toolkits like QT.
How about having redhat buyout opera and begin distributing opera under either the qpl or the bsd license. that would certainly solve our problems and it would **really** hurt Netscape and Microsoft!
I don't think that we would be any better off. Do you have any idea how much it costs to do space exploration?! No way in hell most upstarts could afford it. The internet will probably help the 3rd world countries the most by giving them a level playing field once they can start feeding themselves on a regular basis
Very enlightening. My problem is that most people think there is something psychologically wrong with me because I am a geek stuck in the body of a jock. Many people who don't know me think that I play on my school's football team or something like that, but they act like I am the antichrist when they find out I don't really like sports. Another funny thing is that I haven't had a girlfriend since the summer before 10th grade, and I am a junior now. Oh well. Good article. I might mirror it on my site just to make sure that this gem doesn't get lost in/.'s archives.
Hasn't the possibility for such a thing been around for quite a while? If I am wrong though please excuse me because I am largely an ignorant peasant when it comes to networking.
It's the distro I use. Everything Petreley said about it is true. I don't know why RedHat gets so many kudos for "ease of use", but Caldera deserves them.
this sounds like a microsoft naming convention

Remember Visual J++ 1.x? Well it's next version was VJ++ 6
Less Than Jake, The Offspring, Operation Ivy, Five Iron Frenzy, the Toasters, Cherry Poppin Daddies and Bid Bad Voodoo Daddy. Of course the only coding I do is playing around with Perl and Java. I don't have the money to buy any C++ books other than idiots guide to C++.
I just saw an ad on MTV for it tonight and the people interviewed look like script kiddies at best. The only thing MTV is good for is providing music videos to capture with a video capture card.
I was hoping there for a second that Jobs would announce that OS XI would ported to Alpha and that the Alpha would be the official Mac processor. Though I can easily get along with my G3 powerbook and my PII Linux desktop. Where is the best place to get a cheap Alpha workstation that costs $2500?

There should be severe penalties for things like this. Make these greedy corps pay millions of $'s each quarter until they give up the patent.
No it just makes most denominations of christianity evil.

letters@macweek.com I just emailed them (politely) to stop doing this kind of thing and to actually see how badly it goes over.

More hardware support for Linux is always good! I wonder if Be will be allowed to use these as references for BeOS drivers

Bring it on! The more mhz the better. Now I need to find an older Mac for BeOS PPC and a P200 for a gateway.....
