Speak for yourself. In 1985 I was addicted to BBSes. Granted, it wasn't as vast as the world wide web but I sent email, interacted on online forums not unlike this one, read educational materials, exchanged programs, played games, etc. And if you had the cash there was Compuserve, Quantum Link, Prodigy and others. Most of my free hours outside of school were spent online from about 1984 on.
I should think as a American you should be happy that police are finally changing their focus from drug users to home break ins and car thefts.
I missed the part where they said they were moving focus away from drug use. History shows us that...if any technology proves remarkably effective at fighting a particular type of crime, they'll just demand more money to fund the new technology and maintain the status quo with their other programs. The powerful don't give up power easily. Somebody more powerful has to make them do it.
Even if it is, so what? It's not the end of the world. Some cities get flooded...people relocate...farmlands dry up...others are created....political/economic power changes. Change is constantly happening. It's not new.
I think you might have answered your own question, and the answer is "Yes". Without security measures buildings get blown up. With security measures buildings don't get blown up.
A 9/11 style attack is impossible now. The passengers aren't as naive as they were then. Anyone attempting what the 9/11 hijackers attempted will quick have their bodies bloodied by every passenger that can get close enough. And really...how hard is it to defeat one of these machines? If all you want to do is blow up the plane, you can easily shove enough explosives up your ass to do so (not that I'm speaking from experience). We've got to face the fact that if we want to live in a free society there's going to be a risk....especially if Americans are deliberately pissing off people who have nothing to lose.
Sorry, pre-nge, this game was awesome. It had the best crafting system, resource system, and economy of anything before or since. And watching people dance to heal your wounds really was not that tedious. If you need that much instant gratification, you shouldn't be playing an MMO anyway...this attitude ruins immersion.
How could it differentiate between a kid walking on the side walk and one running into the road after a ball...or a deer charging toward the road at full speed. Not only does the computer absolutely have to be able to identify objects, but also anticipate their actions while off road (like a human can). This simply can't be done with today's computers and software.
Why is that? The CCDs used for the camera--while sensitive to IR--cannot distinguish between IR and visible wavelengths without expensive/additional camera hardware that serves little purpose. Not to mention the IR would have to be pulsed in a way so that you know the source of the light is one of the anti recording signals...the phone would have to do some heavy processing of each pixel to determine if there are any IR light sources pulsing in that manner...and the CCD may not even be acquiring an image fast enough to make this determination. Conclusion, the CCD is probably the wrong tool for the job. An IR detector is.
I think its loved because ppl wanted to be hip about computers in the 80s and it been riding on that ever since.
Speaking as one who was hip about computers in the 80's, I can quite confidently say that nobody but us nerds wanted to be hip about computers in the 80's. The 90's were when it started to become hip.
Sure it could. But not even the stars are locked in position in the Milky Way. The stars wander around a bit too and have near misses and collisions. It's just that space is so big, and they're not moving very quickly relative to each other that it happens infrequently. And since it's so big, the odds of even two stars colliding are very unlikely. It's like throwing two bottles into separate sides of the Atlantic and waiting for them to collide.
someone @ te DoJ realizes that 41% of the resources being used on theoretical pedobears was a waste of money compared to people who could actually hurt the underlying infrastructure and cause millions if not billions of dollars in damage.
But arresting the guy who just has a few pictures on his computer makes it look like there's a huge problem, and causes people to look away when law enforcement demands greater power to bypass that pesky constitution. It's about maintaining a heightened state of fear to increase their power.
What does this even mean? We're living quite well on earth. This is the height of human civilization. Why not keep pushing to greater heights? Yeah, I get your point that we could take all the money for manned space industry and buy rice and send it to all the starving people on the planet. That's very noble and all...but we're always going to have these kinds of problems on earth. Diverting money from the manned space program for humanitarian purposes isn't going to change much. Population control is going to be the only thing that will bring those problems (including global warming) under some kind of control.
Maybe the word believe is not specific enough in this case. I do not believe a god exists...especially not a benevolent man with a beard sitting in the clouds style god. But to me, that is not a statement that a god does not exist. If someone approached me and ask me if I believed that gray aliens were visiting the earth, I would say no. I've never seen any terribly convincing evidence that they are and I would make arguments as to why this is improbable. That doesn't mean I'm stating for a fact that they are not. It was to this statement of absolute certitude that the poster was using to attack atheists, and to which I was speaking.
Most atheists I know don't argue that there is no god. They simply lack a belief in it. You've been listening to too many Christian windbags who try to make atheists into some kind of anti-christian crusaders.
I know some people who have become rich, a couple very much so. They did by going out and creating things of value. They didn't steal anything. So just fuck you, loser filth.
They didn't steal anything like say...oh... the ridiculously high salaries they earn to flush our savings accounts down the toilet on bad investments and then rely on our tax money to refill those accounts? That isn't stealing at all, is it?
One of the most interesting posts on the page and it's drowned out by hundreds of posts about whether the guy in the article is a bad father. And you guys call yourself geeks. Sorry Rand, no mod points.
Logic fail. The classification has nothing to do with whether or not they could have interbred. How would they know? Neanderthals were classified in 1800's.
So you like them to have hairy legs, armpits, and upper lips as well?

Man made Climate Change is real, and it's a fact.

Ya, there are still a lot of peaks left to cut off.
It's supposed to be released this year. Undoubtedly why SWG is closing down this year.

Atheism is the belief that there are certainly no deities
Your logic fails. Not believing in deities, is not the belief that there are certainly no deities.

The Solarians will rue the day they decided to eff with the US. Nuke em!

Seriously? Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained are two of the most entertaining and well written scifi books I've read in years.
I really hope this was meant as a joke.

Why not just buy off the World Economic Forum and force them to publish more favorable results? That's right...we're America! That's how we roll!
