Actualy when I was back in high school there was talk of an unliscened radio station on campus. The people who did the reasearch found that whatever the maximum legal power would have covered most of the school. Now, the transmitter would cost money for something no one really wants, seeing as FM would kill the sound quality in a $1600 stereo component.

Well, your criticism of his anology is slightly flawed. If you replace every mention of TiVo with "rio reciver" your comment is still valid. The rio reciver lets you have a CD jukebox that holds more CDs that would probably fit in the space, all available at the touch of a few buttons.

The software the empeg guys("sonicblue guys" doesn't work for me) have created is far more advanced than what you would come up with by yourself. I've never actualy used a rio reciver, but I've got two empegs/RioCars and the hardware is great but the software makes it usuable while driving. You can't pick up a mouse and scroll through your mp3 collection while driving on the freeway, but with the empeg is takes 5 secconds to add the song that you just thought of to the current playlist. Are you listening on random and want to hear another song by that artist that just played? One button on the remote. Are you listening on random and don't want to hear more from the artist/album/year that's playing? That's just one button press away. This software is essentialy the same on the reciver, except that you can rip CDs.

Criticising the software without having used it is sort of off base...

I got to Cal(UC berkeley) and we have a couple labs full of SunRays, which I have found great from a user perspective. Now, the thing you're not going to beleive is why. The sunrays are silent. You never notice how loud the fans from forty computers in a lab are untill you walk into one that's quiet. It's much easier to think for long periods of time. The labs are about 50/50 divided between unix pc's and sunrays, and I'll only work on the PC's if I have to, though the (computer desktop) environment is identical.

There are some disadvantages with sharing a Big Computer with a lot of people, but overall the plusses seem to outweigh the minuses. Last year about halfway through the semester the workload increased on the servers and everything slowed down... This was the bad part. The good part was that a month later, they added another server, switched a number of the clients over to it, and everything jumped back up to speed. If these had been PC's that weren't cutting it any more they would have had to be replaced.

I have no idea what they've gone through on the administrative level, or if Sun gives us a good deal or not. They deployed a new lab last year, so they must not hate them...

You can also send money in different currencies, which could be valuble. It's also backed by a real bank, so maybe that's worth something. I'll find out next time I need to send money I suppose.

billpoint is Ebay's payment service, and also offers a secure way to pay another individual with a credit card.

They weren't out any money, and they already had another credit card on file.

I've used paypal since the begining (when it was a way to send money with your palm pilot) and always thought it was a great service, untill this incident. Luckily I've never stored money in my paypal account and I've never given them my checking account information(mama didn't raise no fool). UPS uses a "web pad" of sorts, and it seems to work very well for them, but that's a single use machine. The only real use I can see for these is when they are going to be deployed to do one thing, and have custom applications designed to do their one thing well.

Why? Because there isn't any decent way to get text into them. You can tap out characters on a screen, but that isn't the same as typing, and gets frusterating quickly.

Would it be cool to grab your web pad out of it's charging cradle and relax on the couch? Yes. Untill you decide you want to respond to the guy badmouthing the whole webpad concept on slashdot and try to type a response.

That being said, the lack of storage seems like a good thing, as there really aren't any uses for these that don't involve a network, that's why they're called a webpad.
