Yup, I remember recently i was trying to listen to the Maryland-Duke game, and I tried for an hour or so installing software, searching for a web broadcast. Eventually i foudn a local station rebroadcasing using realplayer and when i downloaded the feed it said "this broadcast has been remved at the request of the rights holder". I was bummed for awhile, but then i realized that I HAD A RADIO! so i just tuned in, took 30 seconds, no software liscences, no installs, no stupid copy control. If this technology were new, people would be slobbering over it. Sometimes the old solution is the best.
I submitted a story about how Arkansas is trying to pass legislation banning evolution in textbooks. It was rejected twice, within about 30 seconds each time. They need a metamod system for submissions too, put up a page with rejected stories and have people mod them to see if the people running the place made the right decision.

And who the heck is the "Open source Initiative" When did they become the be all end all of defining what is and isnt Open source? Heck i could start up my own "Open Source Liscence Standard Committe" and declare that the APSL is the one and only true open source liscence on earth, and ESR and RMS can eat my shorts. The point is, regardless of liscence, if you go to apple you can download the source for darwin, binaries for darwin, you can modify the code and recompile it as much as you want, play around with it, add features if you want etc. Maybe the exact wording of the liscence isnt what your standards committe wants, so they dont certify it. If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, im gonna call it a duck.
Simple math tells me: alot more than could afford a $3,000 apple computer. And Im guessing, based on a bell curve distribution, about 5000% more
The cheapest iMac is $800. It will run OS X, if you want to upgrade the ram to 128 megs, itll run you about $900. Just because the computer YOU would buy from apple costs $3000, doesnt mean they all do. i would assume people from third world countries would tend to buy the cheaper model.
If you dont like apples closed hardware, why dont you start a company to make clones. The rom for an apple computer is insanely small, like 128-512 k All the other components are available from IBM, Motorola, ATI, intel etc. Apple obviously wont let you ship it with X preintalled, but you could ship with LinuxPPC or even darwin. If you dont like the way apple is doing things, get up off your ass and do something about it. As for me, im fine with apples hardware.
The reply to this is the "Jumping off a cliff" answer. Europe has long copyright terms, if we dont do it, when something becomes public domain in the US people will copyright it in Europe and steal all the money we could be making from it. This of course is a total BS answer, since you shoudl be copyrighting things in europe too and secondly who lobbied for longer terms in europe? the same exact people giving the above answer thats who.
deCSS can be used to play legally purchased DVD's, in fact you can argue that deCSS was invented for the express purpose of playing DVD's on a linux box, not copying them. Both items can be used for nefarious purposes, why is one legal and one not? also it would seem that Killing somone and copying a DVD are on the same level with respect to the law
THe Open Source Software alliance announced today that according to industry funded studies, Intellectual Property is too expensive. According to industry spokesman Richard M Stallman, "Intellectual property costs consumers hundreds of billions of dollars a year, essentially a corporate tax on them. In the interests of protecting consumers, we must abolish all Intellectual property rights immediately". Stallman then began giggling uncontrollably.
If it uses the same system as Mathematica 4.0 you will have to get a new code each time. Mathematica generates a code based on something within the machine. If for any reason you need to reinstall you need to get a new code. In theory you could run the software off the CD, but Mathematica wont let you do that either. It assumes that the legally purchased CD youre running the software off of is pirated. Regardless, if windows is using hardware as a basis, youll need a new code if you reformat and reinstall, and especially if you upgrade the HD.
Thats why im intrigued by the new series, if it realy is set before TOS this means no prime directive, the federation is still young and ready to whup some ass, hopefully. And as for why no gibs, what do you expect? its network television for gods sake, you cant even say fuck without having it beeped out, and you expect to see some guys brain flying through the air? hah! i think not.
stuff that works or doesn't work as the plot
demands
yes, the series cant be real world, where nothing ever goes wrong with technology, and things always work the way they should, and only the way they should. Technology going wrong is something that happens, and its gonna happen more in the 24th century than it is now, since there will be more technology and more things to go wrong. Frankly, if the show didnt show this once in awhile, id be suspicious.
I dont know how Napster is gonna do this, perhaps a keyword search? Ultimately though each song woud need to be seen by a human eyeball and listened to by a human ear to make sure that theyre really banning what they want to be banning. i dont see that happening any time soon. Oh, and its spelled metallllicaaaa
But the LORD GOD looked upon his credit report and was wroth. HE looked down upon the sleeping earth and saw that man was corrupted by the might of his bandwith, and pron flowed freely among the systems. And the LORD GOD called upon his credit card company and cancelled the card number and woe unto he who used it after said date. Meanwhile, not less than a swallows flight away, Saint Atalark snuck a hand greande from the arsenal of the great black beast of AARGH. Then saint Atalark raised up the hand grenade on high and said "O LORD bless this thy hand grenade, that it may blow thine enemies into tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the lord did grinand blessed the hand grenade. And the people feasted upon the lambs, and the sloths, and the orangutangs, and the breakfast cereals, and the fruit bats....
everything is magic, didnt you know? why do things fall down? magic. how does the toaster turn bread into toast? magic. How does a computer work? magic. Magic is the answer!
it's the unrestrained braniacs of the world that have given us nukes and filthy mfctring methods.
He said as he typed at his computer. It took an unrestricted Braniac, Steve Wozniac to come up with the first personal computer, not unlike the one you use to post this drivel. Another Unrestricted braniac Linus Torvalds, probably came up with the operating system youre using. An unrestricted Braniac, Thomas Edison, came up with the light bulb thats lighting your room, the basis for the cds you listen to, and the movies that you watch in the theatre. Science can be used for good or evil. Nuclear bombs can be used to blow things up, or they can be used as a threat that kept peace in europe for over 50 years, a real accomplishment if you look at the history. Technology is not evil, the people who come up with technology are not evil, How we decide to use the technology is what is evil or not. I can use a computer to run Seti at home and search for life on other planets, or i can use it to write a virus that causes billions in damage. Its not the computers fault that its used either way, its my fault. Technology gives us power, and with power comes responsibility. Maybe you should start taking some instead of whining and playing the victim
With regards to the british capital point, did you actually read my post? I dont deny any of this, I said that the US first started becoming industrialized at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Before then, yes they were dependant on british capital, and this was key to their development. Many countries today in latin america and asia are in similar positions with respect to US capital. Without fre trade, that capital dries up, and those regions lose all hope of becoming first world countries with reasonable living standards
Believe it or not, I would consider myself a democrat. heh, you might even go so far as to say i was a true marxist. Marx took the long view towards societal change, believeing that if one waited long enough inevitabley the entire world would change to socialism. That remains to be seen, it is the best form of government on earth, except for the small fact that it doesnt work. That doesnt mean I dislike or am even against socialism, id love to see a good solid socialist society but im not holding my breath. Most of my fellow democrats are not students of history and havent seen that all the countries on earth have followed a similar trajectory, and that beign against free trade in the name of jobs is ultimately shortsighted. but thats far too long an answer for the question posed, so ill shut up
You prove my point. The number 1 ranked country is also the most free. Its a process. Different countries are at different stages in the process. The phillipines are in the protectionist phase, while hong kong is in the globalization/world markets stage. One stage leads to another. And by the way youre really good a spewing out numbers that are meaningless without any context I rank you 23 with a score of 2.9 and a percentage of 3.14. Oh and your trade is 4.3, not 2.0!
Read some history of the industrial revolution. Every society that is currently in the "first world" went through a process of exploiting children, workers, and the environment. The transfer from third to first world involves some pain and suffering. America went through it about a century a go, england and the rest of europe anywhere between 1850 and today depending on how far east you go. If you want people to live like americans or europeans do now, you have to go through this process, you cant skip over it, at least, no country has yet successfully done so. The best way to improve the labor conditions in foriegn countries is to support free trade. The more buisnesses move into foriegn countries, the more money flows into them, and by extension to the people working there. The living standards of someone who works in a sweatshop are higher than those of somone who has no job at all. Ultimately the markets for labor will become constrained in these countries and wages will begin to rise. To go from 25-30% unemployment to 10 % doesnt put much pressure on wages, but going from 10 to 5 % does start to put pressure for wages to rise. Now youve got all these factories sitting around, it costs alot of money to build a factory, at first its cheaper to pay the higher wages, living standards continue to go up, skilled labor and education starts to proliferate. Dont tell me that this will never happen because it has already, this is the process america went through, this is the process europe went through, it will happen to third world countries. Brazil, Mexico, china and india are all on the brink of becoming fully industrialized. Within 50 years they will be first world countries. Industrialization takes centuries, be patient
My brother played this game in his Eruopean Civ class. Everyone was divided up into several teams, since the class was big, and each played on a small map, instead of a big one. His team "won" by providing the most for everyone. How? While other students were trying to get the most for themselves, his team decided to think outside the box, and just give everyone equal amounts of everything. They won. Who say socialism doesnt work?
Id like to moderate this article as a troll.

I dont know what is scarier, Microsoft, or the German army shooting Microsoft. If not for Germany, we'd all be spaking english right now
Ironic that microsoft is using a MAC (which btw doesnt even require a serial to run, since you have to buy apple hardware.)
