I also question your various claims about the intent of the constitution with regards to separation of church and state. There are some choice quotes from the time period from various figures involved in the forming of the U.S government who hint and in fact come out and say that there was an intent to keep church and state separate, and that it is reflected if not outright stated in the first amendment.

Those things you mentioned are all hardware. It has been the position of the FSF that software should be free of cost in part because it can be reproduced for next to nothing. Their website even specifically states that if you charge for GPL software you can expect your customers to give it away for free.

So yea, the FSF has this hang up about charging for software as a business model.

This situation is perhaps similar to torrents. A torrent isn't the real data but does "refer" to it in a way similar to how the "key" in this filesystem refers to the actual pieces needed to reconstruct the file, even though those pieces aren't unique.

One could even say that the "key" in this case is even closer to the real data than a torrent.

Overselling bandwidth is necessary, its called statistical multiplexing.

Capping transfer per month at ridiculously low levels is not necessary though, they get plenty of money to pay for what people use, and lets face it, this is a quasi-socialist ISP environment, people who barely use their connections are paying for those who use the connection all the time.

Might not be fair, but the ISPs have nothing to complain about, they have been taking peoples money without having to provide much in return to most of them for a long, long time.

You turned this into a rant against open source in only a few posts. Nice.

First, most of the coax and copper rolled out was put in place a LONG time ago, and the costs for doing so have been recovered many times over by the owner. Second, there was a rule that phone companies had to at least lease the lines at fair prices to other providers, not free as you tried to slip in to the argument, but fair competitive prices so that the line owner was compensated while still allowing for competition. That is gone now and what everyone knew would happen, did. There is one DSL provider in most areas if not all areas, and they ALL FUCKING SUCK.

Competition between classes is not a solution, nether is dial-up so don't even try to pretend its relevant anymore, and satellite has ~800ms latency which is not acceptable, not to mention its ALSO slower than DSL anyway. You can pretend latency doesn't matter but it shows you are being short sighted, try working on a remote server with SSH and tell me 1 second latency doesn't matter.

  22. Re:The internet is a utility on Charter's Trials of NebuAd Halted · · Score: 1

In many areas the local government has granted specific companies exclusive rights to operate coax runs, that's a monopoly on cable internet service in that specific area, no other company can come in and offer cable internet service. The same is true of DSL, whoever owns the lines can jack up prices and neglect to upgrade their network, and they do.

The effect is that you don't have true competition, in any given area you have at most 2-3 competitors between classes of service, and its obviously not enough. You can claim there is no monopoly on "internet service" but that's not the point, there are still damaging effects on the market.

An example, Comcast is only rolling out DOCSIS3 in areas where FiOS is a threat, and Verizon is only rolling out FiOS in areas where other services are a threat. If they were forced to compete with other providers for the same service type they wouldn't be playing these fucking games.

Contrary to your claim, most security issues occur in parts of the system that handle data for other programs, like system libraries, services, the kernel itself. Things that are usually quite different between platforms like i pointed out before.

An exploit targeting a windows library to handle jpeg data is worthless against a Linux machine. And as in this specific case, an Applescript is completely worthless against Linux, I'm not there's a way to run Applescripts on Linux even with significant effort, certainly it goes way beyond "click this poker game!", you'd have to manually install all sorts of stuff if its even available at all.
