  1. Move along, nothing to see here on Will the U.S. Lose Control of the Internet? · · Score: 1

The US DOES NOT control the internet and the internet is not entirely web-based either! First of all, there are two main regulatory bodies: IANA and ICANN. IANA manages IPs and has sub-organizations, notably the Number Resource Organization which is an international body composed of Regional Internet Registries (RIR). For the most part, ICANN has been managed by the University of Southern California (ooo look liberals here!) under a Department of Commerce contract. Not to mention, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is an international organization/group open to anyone during the early 1990s. So despite the necessary funding, the US Govt has thankfully kept it's hands out of the pot. So what it seems to me is that all this talk is a bunch of talk by a bunch of blowhards who want to satisfy an uninformed constiuency.

Seeing as there is no truly neutral nation or ground on this Earth.. don't count on a multi-national body being able to succesfully neutralize the Internet. What happens when you have a multiple extremist nations ? I agree that the Internet should be removed from US Govt control completely, but there is no guarantee what is happening with the Internet now won't get worse with a multi-national body either.

Chock this one up for the list of current Addictions. Any type of obsessive behavior is bad. That's why they say, "Everything in moderation." If WoW is going to be your hobby then fine, but you reap what you sow. Why is it that Americans are addicted to anything? If all of a sudden blank, white 8x11 paper became a fad, someone would be addicted to it, a psychiatrist would blame it on a Catholic Priest, and then there would be all of these self-help books on "8x11 White Paper and How to Stop".

You'd think that Adults and Children exist in two totally seperate universes. Parents need to watch their kids and what they do. It's that simple. So what if the guy didn't use his real name or picture? The kids would still be at risk. No amount of regulation or supervision will prevent every crime. Don't expect the Government to watch every bad guy, because they can't.

It's called the Long-arm statute. Most, if not all, have this statute so say someone in Maine can sue someone in Texas. With the long-arm statute, if there is no parent company in the US, the papers can be served to the Illinois Secretary of State. The Illinois Secretary of State then forwards these papers to the parent company in the UK, etc. Because the UK is treaty to the Hague Convention, they are privy to this serving. Now, the spammer may not collect on that million and it is simply a matter of principle. But since the UK is pretty good allies with US and if Spamhaus has any US assets, I wouldn't be surprised if they are seized and sold at auction or liquidated by the court in order to get this spammer their money.

I think you are terribly mistaken. Spamhaus screwed up. They could of ignored or sent an attorney as special counsel to the case without acknowledging the jurisdiction of the Illinois court. Because they asked it to be moved to Federal, they pretty much acknowledged that the judge now has jurisdiction over the case. Then, because they don't like the judgement, they go ahead and try and ignore it. Instead of not showing up, Spamhaus could of done a better job in front of jury. Because they didn't, the judge didn't have much choice as the plaintiffs win by default.

This is BS. Teens don't buy legit because they are lazy. They don't have the capital to purchase music nor do they have the motivation anymore to go out, get a job, and buy legit music. Plus, why be the good guy buying legit music when most of their friends are buying it illegally or sharing it with each other? It's counter-intuitive. Additionally, I would say that there are three or four songs most people like on an album.

    [soapbox]
Most people take three or four songs from an album and combine them with other artists to make their own mixed albums. Maybe instead of turning bands into music generating machines that all sound the same, maybe bands should put more effort into their music so people actually WANT to buy the entire album.
    [/soapbox]

Bottom line, there are plenty of ways for them to purchase music legally.
