*************************** I accidently posted this under AC status, my mistake. I want JonKatz to know who I am. ***************************
Listen up JK: Normally I don't comment on these articles that you write, since some are good, some are not, and the hot-grits people usually have all the criticism you need.
"Knocking the religious on their antiquated behinds?"
Do you mean to say that ALL RELIGIOUS PEOPLE are living in the past? Could you have possibly offended more people? You have simultaneously offended all of the major religions at once, JK. Way to go. That's it, drag the fucking ratings in for Andover, and make that IPO paycheck gleam. You have just invalidated any respect I might have had for your journalistic prowess.
Hemos, CmdrTaco, we had a debate about AC's yesterday, and how to decide whether or not to let them participate. Can we have a poll put up to decide whether or not to let JK participate?
Do you really think YOU are just a "bag of chemicals?" Really? Do you think you're any better than the bacterica in your intestines? You're both life. You're both bags of chemicals. What makes you different? Just because bacteria don't "rationalize" as we know it, isn't rationalization itself the byproduct of chemical reactions?
What about Faith? Is faith really just the result of chemical reactions?
Why do you think I'm on "crutches" of reason? You haven't offered me any convincing argument that God doesn't exist, and that therefore, the soul does not exist. Prove it to me that they don't. Prove to me that I'm no different then a single bacterial-life. Bacterial life doesn't slam religion without any more argument than "You're just stupid and wrong." Bacterial life just eats, breathes, reacts, defecates, and dies. So do you. And I. So does that mean we're bacteria? You state "I'd love to kick away the crutches" as if to say that "Your stupid faith has no basis, but I'm too kind to say so." Whatever.
Dude, if I had karma to give you, you'd get it for that.:) Even if I'm Catholic and therefore supposed to Inquisition your punk-ass or something. Extremely funny!
I believe God created life (and all other things!), and therefore man.
So: Life is not the invention of man, it is that of God.
Therefore, if man "creates" life, he does not hold the patent.:) (Small joke, considering all the patent posts lately.) Or, is it better to say, he didn't create life from nothing, for the first time. And, when you get right down to it, "life" is really just a bunch of complex chemical reactions. I see no reason why God would not allow man to expand himself to create complex chemical reactions, no matter their end result.
The question you're all REALLY asking is: Does a "man-created" life form posess, for lack of a better term for you agnostics, atheists, and people who just like to debate:) a soul? I don't think there's any question man will create artificial intelligence. I don't think there's any doubt that man will create the complex chemical reactions of life, and possibly artificial humans. We create humans all the time, it's called sex.:) The process is unimportant. What IS important is: ONLY God can create a soul. Man may create the shell, but only God can create the soul. Should man create a vessel capable of a soul, then God may decide to give that vessel a soul. It's up to God, really. God created the man that created the machine or creation with the soul.
The process is unimportant. God still initiated it. And so, man only creates life because God allows it to be so. So, man is not a god, he is God's instrument, and shall always be.
How's my logic now? And actually, I'm not offended by your questions, they're quite valid.
Warning: The following opinion states my point from a religious aspect. If you don't want to be exposed to religious beliefs, go no further.
I think that the ethical implications of this are enormous, and reach beyond the Judeo-Christian boundries that you think this is pushing. Note that the researchers only said "consult with religious leaders," without specification as to type.
There are those who think that ethics and religion don't go hand in hand. I disagree. That thing that Judeo-Christians like to call a consience is what drives us to a standard for ethics. The idea that an religious life is an ethical life is part of our core beliefs.
This is quite important, as you noted "We never stopped to think if we should." I must commend them for taking this step.
As a firm (but not rigid, for those that might call me intolerant) believer in God, I am impressed that in these times that the team even felt it was necessary to ask this question. Many posters here on/. seem to think that infomation is for information's sake alone, that ethics and religion have nothing to do with answers.
Do I think science should not be looking for this answer? No. Through science, we learn the mind of God. Perhaps in time, science can create life. But science can NEVER make something out of nothing. Only God can. So I don't feel that the creation of life belongs to God, per se. The soul, that belongs to God. Science may create the vessel, but never the essence.
For those of you who don't share my beliefs, that's fine. This is just my point of view. You're entitled to your own, just as I am.
I was going to put a line here that recalled her "song" in "History of the World Part I", but the dumb Slashdot lameness filter caught my repetition. The part where she's choosing her escorts to the orgy..."Yesnonono.." you get the point. Truly funny stuff.
She was a perfect partner in comedic cooperation to Mel Brooks. A sad day indeed. The history of the world was made more humorous with her biting style.
You know, thank God for the 'net and Slashdot. You may often see lots of BS strewn about here )some of it mine, probably:) ) but the one thing this really gives us is a view from the eyes of real people, instead of the filtering of the press media.
So here we have CNN and others reporting on "wide-spread" violence, looting. The press release from the police says only that pepper spray was used. The news media ( a tool of special interests, in my opinion) always puts their spin on things, never an objective report to be found.
I'm not saying that the personal reports here are objective, perhaps, but at least here we can get a view other than the one those special interests want to see.
Freedom of the 'net is just as important as freedom within a country. The 'net is a 'country' unto itself, with few or no boundries.
Well, if he's found guilty of treason (which by the definitions above say he's not) then he can keep Bill Klinton kompany in prison (after his term, I hope somebody prosecutes the man).
Slick Willie sold us out to the Chinese. Atomic research, anyone? Now THAT is treason, if nothing else is.

I _was_ playing this at 1024X768 on my TNT2 just fine with version 1.08. Now, I can hardly even play it at 640x480 16bit with all the detail turned off, and a Voodoo2 to boot (while online). What happened?
Without having seen the site myself, I can't say whether or not the FBI had good reason or not to coerce the ISP to remove the site.
This is something I do know. You readers of Slashdot know, and I know, that life will go on, despite computer downtime. Computer downtime is a fact of life to us. But you do not understand the complete sheep-like fear of the unknown that non-computer-savvy people have.
Computers are the magic that glues their lives together. They don't know, nor do they want to know, how computers really work. And, in this ignorance, they see the movie industry hyping doom, countless 20/20 type interviews hyping doom, commercials hyping doom, so what else are they to believe? Computers are as much as magic to these people as quantum physics are to me. (Hey, C and java, no problem. Schrodinger? Whatever:) )
The combined panic of thousands of people could cause a breakdown, when no other conditions for breakdown exist. Want proof? Look no further than the riots in L.A. after the Rodney King trial. Bank runs could destroy our current fractional banking system. So the real question here is, is the FBI trying to protect their interests, or everyone's? Are they removing the equivelent of a man screaming "FIRE!" in a crowded theatre?
This is a surprise. I expected the same situation IBM went through in the eighties. The process went through the courts for about ten years in the appeals process, and I believe that IBM really didn't lose much but time.
Whatever happens, Microsoft is an integral (if annoying) part of our economy. The wanton destruction of such a huge company would only hurt us.
This leave MS in a nice position, really. We can slap them about, but we (as a country) are so dependent on them, that destroying them would hurt the economy.
It will take far more intelligence and foresight to deal with the verdict than I have.:)
Justifying this self-absorbed braggart, who is to "computer security" what Microsoft is to "innovative computing", with open questions about his shameless practices is an affront to the readers and members of Slashdot.
Doubtless some of the members of Attrition and some contributers to Packetstorm are not without blame.
These people never tried to stop the free flow of information about computer security. For good or bad, they passed (and still pass, thank you) information about computer security for everyone.
JP apparently feels that to get security information, you have to play the high-school popularity games of "I'm in the gang. Don't ask us if you're not" when he himself is at best a collecter of script kiddie attacks.
Gee, JP, where did you get your information? Did you (GASP!) HACK something? Now, was it YOUR system?
As Thomas Aquinas said: "There is nothing so good or so evil that it cannot be used for either purpose."
Or something like that.
Good or bad, it's here now. It's up to us to control the invention's use.
Besides. Think of writing a script to control your arm movements at Quake 3. You could be your own bot. Invincible! Whoohoo! Erasebot, Jumbot, here comes the REAL thing. And just think, for all those people who can't rub their head and pat their stomach at the same time...Programming to the rescue!
Can anyone deny now that opensource is catching on? First Creative Labs. Then Aureal. Now, Creative labs again, and DVD source!
As a gesture, it might be nice to thank these and all the other companies (i.e. Trident, nVidia, 3Dfx) and others who provide us with this critical support for Linux (and other Opensource os's). This is so we can get back to what computers and os's are all about. Games!...:) I mean, if Ken Ritchie wrote an O/S just so he could play a game, what doubt could there be?
Well, no one is mentioning sales figures, but Loki is still solvent. So, they must be doing ok. I've seen this game and CivCTP for sale (way in the back, tho) in the local Babbage's and EB. I even saw CivCTP for Linux available in Wal-Mart! Who'd have guessed?
I have decided to get Loki's port of Heavy Gear 2. I'm not much for strategy, but blowing stuff up, just what a Web deveoper needs...:)
Right to the point! So what if a bunch of Americans who evidently have more money than taste buy these things. Gartner slams Linux with hostile review By Ellen Cresswell 14 October, 1999 SYDNEY - A damning report from Gartner has all but put the kiss of death on Linux, but devotees of the OS maintain it's a force to be reckoned with.
OH NO! Hide the children! Fork the processes! Gather your PC's into a Token ring! It's a negative review of Linux!
Wait a minute. We've seen these before. Shades of Mindcraft and Microsoft. Never mind.
And who knows, these people at the Gartner group point out the obvious. But what is not so obvious is the very things they view as a weakness is our strength. No one person or group responsible for Linux. And yet, we accomplish so much.
"Hi, I'm Attorney General Janet Reno. Welcome to the Department of Justice Web Page for Congressional Members!
"In this part of the Page, we will be reading about citizens of different political parties, religious views, and cultures who don't meausure up to our standards, and how we will respond with force.
"As you read about the experiences of these lesser citizens, think about what you would do if you found yourself lobbied by them. Think about what you would do to stop them.
How might you respond? "By manipulation of the popular press, slanted polls, and blackballing those who fall outside the lines of our administration, we can learn ways to point out differences that make these people look fanatical or dangerous. We can also learn how we can treat ourselves outside the scope of laws we define for the citizens.
"Together, we can help stop these hateful opinions that hurt political careers just like yours. "
Hey, I'm not endorsing it, I'm just pointing out how easy it is to get started....and therefore how easy it is to get in over your head. You are correct, you don't want o/s admins that don't know what they're doing. But the managers of companies don't understand this. What they don't understand is: "Under xNIX I got a scalable, secure, robust open-standards commerce solution up and running, but since I was new to electronic commerce, it took me six months, since I actually developed a requirments document."
