    Unfortunately, the abstraction layers just keep piling on there.

    Well, to be fair, they're just re-writing software the way it should have been done in the first place, but couldn't originally due to the hardware's limited capabilities.

    I'd say your best bet is to use an NVIDIA card with dual outputs, TwinView enabled, and let NVIDIA's implementation of Xinerama take care of the per-monitor fullscreen stuff for you (most apps I've come across are Xinerama aware...with the notable exception of games, in which you have to get creative with your X config file to get it to fullscreen only on a single display correctly). You won't have the ability to control your virtual desktops on a per-monitor basis, but I think that feature pales in comparison to being able to move stuff freely between both monitors.

    I often wonder if part of the success of the original XBox was it's "hackability".

    I know that I wouldn't have bought the 2 Xbox's that I did if it weren't for the fact that I could hack them and put XBMC on them.

    There are other ways to identify traffic other than source and destination addresses/ports. For example, if MagicJack makes proper use of the ToS IP flag, then you can take advantage of that with a Linux-based firewall by marking low-latency packets with iptables and throwing them into the proper QoS class with the iproute2 tools.

    From the Comsumer Reports review:

    Some interference occurred when the tester tried talking while downloading a large file or playing an online game. If you can live with that, we think the Magic Jack is a great deal.

    Something that could easily be overcome with a router that has decent QoS capabilities. Overall, it seems like a decent deal.

    I agree completely. Although I've been a fan of id software since Commander Keen, they don't have shit on Splash Damage's ability to make fun games. The two companies make an awesome team though: id's engines combined with Splash Damage's game design yields awesome results.

    Splash Damage did a wonder job with the gameplay in ET:QW. I still play it regularly as my primary game, even though the graphics look a bit dated...the gameplay just isn't matched in anything else I've played as far as FPS's go. These guys put a ton of thought into their games.

    At least Intel does their development in the open.

    I assume this is directed towards NVIDIA and AMD/ATI. If so, then yeah...it's easy to develop in the open when you have nothing to hide. Last I checked, Intel wasn't anywhere near NVIDIA and ATI/AMD in the GPU arena; their GPUs that can do little more than render composited desktops. Intel is able to do open development because they know very well that their competitors are already years ahead of what they're capable of, thus they don't have a lot of fear of their trade secrets being used against them by their competitors.

    I have no idea who any of the people involved are, or what their products (or websites maybe?) are supposed to do. For the sake of us who aren't familiar with every current lawsuit, could you please add a little context to the story summaries? This isn't exactly like mentioning a new salvo in IBM v. SCO where you can assume a majority of Slashdotters will have a clue WTF you're talking about.
