Wow. Slashdot commenting goes down for an hour or so. No new posts show, so what happens, tons of people post off topic replies as they think they are the 'first poster'. I've never seen so much spam. Hey, I'm off topic too now.
So why not ship the product with no software installed?
This happens in the UK — If a PDA (like iPod Touch) or phone (like iPhone) has a calculator function, then you have to pay import duty, so manufacturers import with no software on the device, avoiding the duty charges. This software is either installed by the user, or the product is flashed with the software within the UK and packaged up before distributing to retail.
Also have to think of how much CO2 is uses in its lifetime.
A Prius for example, uses more CO2 to manufacture the car than a Land Rover uses to manufacture (from mining materials to coming off the production line), fuel for the whole of its lifetime, and to dispose of. Land Rovers typically use a lot of fuel and last a long time on the road.
Guess there is MacUpdate utility. Why they have never gone into a store and distribution model has always confused me. They are halfway there already.
Someone should make an alternative to Apple's App Store, without the silly restrictions (however I do support testing to see if the app works, checking it wont steal my data and perhaps parental limits).
You can do the same with iOS devices. You can host your own apps which fall outside of the App Store regulations, and distribute them to all your companies devices.
But handset manufacturers do not distribute vanilla versions of each OS. Sometimes the OS varies between different handsets from the same manufacturer running the same OS version.
With traffic doubling every two years, the limits of current networks are getting close to saturating.
That's ok, we have been following Butter's Law for quite some time, just like Moore's Law following transistor density. To cost of sending data halves every 9 months, and data networks double in speed every 9 months. This is well within the problem with the traffic doubling every two years.
Never been to the UK during winter I take it?
Oh goodness no, they could have some fancy American "software patents" for their ECU software. *shakes head*
Youre OS reports the size incorrectly — you still have 2.1 TB, your OS is lying and should say 1.91 TiB, not 1.91 TB.
There are no lies from the drive manufacturers.
I think all but Windows now have the calculations correctly shown. Apple have moved to 1000b to 1kB etc, and many Linux distributions measure as kiB.

Flash 10.2 is 64 bit. Preview 2 is already out. :)

Now Apple has a patent for any form of multi-touch mobile device. Really, we had this function back in the 1980's.
See music/record industry, early year 2000's.
Why? It has been /.ed anyway.
Saw it in your sig the other day. I posted as AC. :o)
I think you fail to realise; Sony already has PlayStation Network, PlayStation Store and developers on board. Sort of makes your argument pointless.
Windows 7 phones are out, yes. But they only serve the casual gamer — they lack a d-pad for a start.
Apple push new versions of Flash through the Mac OS X software updater.
How is this different to Windows users? Windows holds 95% of worldwide market share, but does not come with Flash plugin preinstalled.
But, HTML 5 is several years away

Marginally, no. I don't think I have never seen a gas station with the pumps that doesn't sell diesel alongside petrol.
More expensive per gallon of liquid fuel, yes. But it works out cheaper overall as you get more mpg.

Wouldn't it be amazing if this "apt" thing was ported to Mac OS X too. Oh wait, it has. Try Fink project.

That's why we have meta moderating, so we can moderate the moderators.
You should read the FAQ http://slashdot.org/faq/metamod.shtml
You're right. Now we can google her and see her dumb lawsuit.
Let the Streisand Effect begin. :S
Oh, my stomach, it's in stitches!
