  1. Re:Get serious! on Has Netscape's Browser Become Too Self-Serving? · · Score: 1

Wherever dollars go, it's undeserved becuase netscape6 is a bad product. If the java engine is installed (as if anyone would want to have browser which doesn't speak java!?), there are javavm threads started, browser itself takes 32M of memory, approximately 14MB of those are shared, and, of course, the whole thing is excruciatingly slow. Version 6 does not find mail (I don't have it in the expected $HOME/Mail directory, because that's the first place where any mailer that I may want to test looks) and does not have an icon on the sidebar to start mailer. There is something wrong with the cookies mechanism because it has refused to remember my ATM card number for PC banking. Overall, it's an early beta. I'll wait for the AIX version. When AIX version arrives, v6
is going to be stable on linux as well. Alltogether, a disgusting product which can only be recommended to the marketing personnel.

  2. Red Hat trying some tricks with versions???? on Red Hat Linux 7 Released · · Score: 1

In the announcement Red Hat is offering gcc 2.96,
glibc 2.2 and Acrobat Reader 5.0. All of those versions are slightly higher then the versions that we are used to. Is Red Hat abusing the fact that they are responsible for the GCC development? How come that they alone have those versions? There is something rotten in the state of Danemark..

  4. Re:Kernel and GCC 2.95 on GCC 2.95 Released · · Score: 1

I compiled the 2.2.10 kernel yesterday and it
works without a glitch, despite the fact that I used gcc-2.9.5. I've only got few warnings
like xxxx: variable 'result' might be used
without being initialized, but everything else
worked fine. On the other hand, I haven't included
modules which I don't need (SMP, SCSI, Ethernet).
Some of those still may blow up, but the fortunate
majority (we with the cheap PCS) will never have
    to discover that.

  6. A Unix in my car? on Linux on a FlashCard: home project · · Score: 1

How many people would die if our cars were Unix
based? I believe we would be reading titles like
    this:

A pile up on 101 north due to a glitch in
in Linux/Dodge with CDE. Screen froze due
to a color handling bug in dtwm, which in
    turn has rendered /dev/steeringwheel unusable.
15 have died in the accident. Relatives are
collecting money to put a contract on RedHat CEO's head.
The accident could have been avoided if the
driver managed to type in "init 6" on time.
Ford is pointing out that their car are
much safer because Solaris/Ford is more
mature and in case of a trouble, it's enough
to press Stop-A on the car console and it will
    reboot itself on the fly.

I think I'll buy a horse if that ever happens.
