    I find that when setting up sometning under unix, you can expect it to be working for a LONG time afterwords as well ... just recently at my place of employment I had to upgrade sendmail due to an ORBS warning, (which meant reconfiguring), and while it was a pain in the butt, one couldn't help but admire that the sendmail hadn't been touched since 1997 :)

    I've actually written a porn bot in python/glade ... "beelzebot" ... :) Its an automated usenet porn downloader/decoder.

    In x86 assembley 12 space tabs is the best, (this way your operands always line up)...

    Point being, choice of tab size really depends on the langauge :)

    Better then that, the music starts as a very lush epic trance or something, and the themes gradually converge down to just that one note :)

    Its kind of a mixed bag ... I tell ya I could care less about about anime ... I couldn't rant about why / how much I hate it, but we'll save that for another day ...

    However, I have been enjoying the simpsons news, the star wars news [to some degree], the LOTR news, an the star trek news ... so I can only immagine that to some the anime news is intersting...

    It is interesting to note that alot of the science news dosen't make it on the main page, but anime seems to :)

    good point man! Look at lucasarts, their PC games always shoot VERY low on the spectrum, in 1999 when grim fandango came out, the requirement was a pentium 133! in 2001 Curse of Monkey Island, required a pentium 200 and any 3d accelerator! [although it sucked:)]

    I run my project studio (audio production) on a dual PII-300 with 512 megs of ram (win2k) ... Although secretly I dream of a a dual athlon 1.5hgz machine, this one has worked great since I bought it in early 1998 :) dan

    Well thats the problem isn't it? The average knockout isn't smart enough to sign up for web hosting, ftp a picture in, and then give the url of that photo to amihotornot :)

    Gotta face the reality here that its mostly men putting up pictures of women:)

    ok, he mentioned solopism so I get to tell the joke :)... for those of you who aren't don't know solopism is : The theory that the self is the only thing that can be known and verified or The theory or view that the self is the only reality.

    [joke begins]A professor is teaching a philosophy course, and he explains to his class solopism, the theroy that reality is a creation in ones mind. After the lecture, several students rush up and introduce themselves to the professor and explain that the theroy was really intune with how they felt and its really opened their minds and they just wanted to tell him in person how the felt about his lecture ... to this the professor replies "Thats wonderfull, so rarely does one solipsist meet another."

    I wonder how it lasted, I'd think it'd overheat...

    If the server was in a state that had cool weather which I believe north carolina does [IANANCL (north carolinan)] most of the year, then the server probably would be at risk of overheating only a few days of the year.

    I've seen stuff like this done where I work before :) Except its on purpose ... Wanna download porn / mp3's / whatever with the universities bandwidth? Bring an old pentium 200 with a big HD, and stash it under a desk, in a filing cabinet, and pick it up when the HD's full ... in the meantime if anyone asks any questions no one can recall who it belongs to!

    Alternatley some try to make their box blend in with the servers in the wild, ie sticking universtiy property tags on it :)

    Read the subtext ... Interoperability is a *competitive strength*. Publishing the office file formats would only strenghten other operating systems :) It reminds me of a phrase from applied cryptography [parahrasing] "Almost by definition the 3 letter agencies are more advanced then us. They read all of our research papers, and we read none of theirs." Same thing with MS ... they read lots of formats ... they don't publish them :)

    Me? I'd like to see MS Word tget friendly with PS/EPS and latex ... I'm not holding my breath

    Is it just me or is SGI smothering under the weight of their own greed? You pay 30,000$ for a SGI machine -- and they try and soak you for a rediculous service contract ... Without a service contract the only patches you can get for your OS are security patches (no bugfixes/upgrades). You pay 600$ for the IRIX Media (not included with your 30,000 computer) and it dosen't come with a compiler! So you have to buy their compiler for another fortune or get gcc + their libraries that warn you about you haven't paid for them yet [but you still can compile]...

    And once you've done all that... Does most OS software compile? no ...

    Someone tell me I'm wrong about all this!

    First of all, lemme say this is the stupidest ask slashdot ever, and thats quite a task.

    Second of all, I think its highly likely that alien technology wouldn't operate on the same principles our technology would thus making interfacing quite dificult and probably the data would be so foreign to make the whole thing maningless in the first place! Case in point: taelons have "biological" computers...

    I will note however, my EFC soundtrack came on an audio cd, so cds are clearly the best format for inter-species data exchange.

    Lastly, none of lifes higher questions can be answered by pondering a sci-fi show :) While I do watch EFC religiously, it has absolutley no content.
