This is similar to a book by Arthur C. Clarke called Songs of Distant Earth. On a low-population planet, the method of electing a leader is basically a randomized computer ballot. Anyone that wants to become leader is automatically eliminated as an option because they are assumed to have ulterior motives that would be detrimental to the population. Of the remaining candidates, the leader is selected at random (or at least as randomly as the computer can).

Or, as in the case of my friend (who lives out East in the Maritimes [Canada]), neither. He was having trouble with his torrents (had recently switched to a new provider), and after a few days of utter frustration finally figured out what was going on.

The provider not only "delayed" traffic based on ports and header-checking, it also had a policy to outright block all encrypted traffic that wasn't coming over port 80. Downright stupid if you ask me.

He taught me CSC181, which was the advanced option of the first-year computer-science course. Back then he was working with developing a system for cell-phones where you could type text by wobbling the cell-phone aroud in your hand instead of pressing keys.

I'm really glad to see his research going well, it seems he's doing very well for himself =)

And I'm not talking digital as in ATSC (HDTV), because there's really no way to fake that; I mean the regular cable channels that get broadcast in "digital" format but really there's not much difference.

Isn't there an infobox you can fill out about clips you're uploading? Place a link to your blog entry in that infobox and sate the educational purpose of the video. That way the context doesn't just disappear for people that just happen to be browsing YouTube. They see the link to your blog post, click on it, and then see how the video is used in an educational scenario.

I am not an expert in copyright matters, nor am I experienced in posting YouTube videos; perhaps I'm wrong, but what I've said certainly seems intuitive enough.

  15. Re:The NASA folks must have been watching bad film on NASA Finds Star With a Tail · · Score: 1

Space is not a complete vacuum; you can in fact have an object travelling at "supersonic" speeds in space. Effectively, what they are really saying (assuming the description is accurate, I haven't RTFA), is that the star is creating a shockwave of space particles (mostly Hydrogen and Helium). Its been 16 months since my Gasdynamics course, but if I recall correctly, these "shockwaves" can have widths on the order of 10s of meters.

Besides, although "supersonically" implies faster-than-sound (and indeed, in most intuitive cases this definition applies), what it is really referring to is travelling faster than speed at which information can propagate in a medium. If you are below this speed, than compression of particles "informs" particles ahead of you in your path of your imminent arrival, and they begin to compress to make room. If you are above this speed, there is no prior knowlege of your arrival and the particles hit a shockwave, "instantaneously" (read: very quickly) accelerating to a velocity that brings them out of your path.

Great, so you have a 50Mbit connection in your area. That connects you at 50Mbit to the cable company's switch. What happens then? All your packets get jammed into the same clogged connections from the cable co to their tier2 ISP. I would be far more happy if my 10Mbit cable connection wasn't limited to 60GB per month (combined up/down). If I had a 50Mbit connection, I would just be able to fill up that 60GB quota 5x faster.

If I can smell diesel exhaust (which I can from SmartCars and Volkswagon TDIs), then there is still a significant amount of harmful materials getting through the filtering process. No matter how well you filter engine exhaust, its always better to start from a cleaner combustion source; catalytic converts and exhaust filters can be applied to regular gasoline combustion engines too. Better than gasoline would be Hydrogen combustion (but at that point I'd say we may as well look at fuel cells instead).
