The PS3 slow running linux? I suppose if you are a complete idiot and install a distribution with generic PPC binaries I guess it could be, but then thats a reflection of the user not the machine:)

And if you take advantage of the SPU's then you can hit some impressive speeds - how about the ability to blit 10,000 1080p frames a second to it's "slow" video?

Whine away about the lack of games, that Home is still in beta, and that you would have to re-mortgage your caravan to buy one, but give it a rest about Linux on the PS3 until you have written SPE code...

    A bit of context:
I'm a long term Sega fan, and when I first moved to Tokyo 12 years ago spent up to 3 hours a night in my local arcade playing Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, and Virtua On Oratorio Tangram, and played all three in competition.

The release of the Dreamcast meant that I got to get the "arcade experience" at home, Soul Calibur with the official Sega arcade controller, and Virtua On with the Twin Stick controller was the best an arcade gamer could could buy.

    Until now:)

    ----

Yesterday the first of the games I bought my PS3 for turned up, Virtua Fighter 5 and the Sega arcade controller.

The controller is simply amazing, cost a fortune but an hour after unpacking it I was online ordering a second! It's currently sitting next to my Dreamcast official arcade controller which , well, looks a little tired.

The game is purely for fight game fans, nothing here for the mass market, but for anyone who spent hours in an arcade playing the various Virtua Fighters it is an absolute must have.

I don't want to even think about much a HDTV, PS3, and controller cost but I'm happy so it was money well spent:)

Forget the console wars, if you are a arcade fight game fan, you need this game, the Tekken download, two Sega controllers, and a PS3. Sell blood if you have to, but get it.

Dear oh dear, there is a huge difference between Square recycling their back catalogue for the umpteenth time on various platforms, and having the latest and greatest FF on anything else than a Sony platform.

If M$ asked nicely (and paid through the nose), Square would release FFVII for XBox360. And?

If you don't understand why the FF core series can only be released on Sony platforms (and yes that is new releases - for the terminally stupid), you need to spend a while researching why, instead of trying to explain the history of Square to someone who was there when it happened:)

Seriously, if you think FFXI on the 360 = Final Fantasy then you are a complete knob, have been duped by M$ and deserve to own a 360 - go play Madden or something...

That CNN article is a pretty amusing read, the reason they give that the PS3 is flawed is:
    >>
When you bought a PlayStation 2, it was a pretty simple process. You paid the store, took the PS2 home, plugged it in and started playing. Things aren't so simple this time.
Once you've plugged in and configured your PS3, you'll have to update the system software
    >>

Which is back to front - with my release day Japanese PS3 to update drivers I just went online, for my release day PS2 I had to phone SCE and have the 1.01 DVD update snail mailed to me!
And don't get me started on the pain and suffering I went though to get a CD with the later HD drivers to replace the initial Japanese HD CD.

At the moment here in Tokyo if you go shopping you can see the war has been lost by Nintendo already, in Akihabara the stores all have playable PS3 setups, at Sofmap yesterday they put up barriers on the pavement and had two members of staff trying to stop people gawping at Ridge Racer blocking the pavement - meanwhile pretty well the only sign of the Wii in the whole of Akihabara is a video monitor outside Asobit playing a six month old video demoing the controller.

If Nintendo could get Final Fantasy (the real thing), and Dragon Quest on the Wii they would have a chance, but without they are doomed to be a distant second in the Japanese market.

Yesterday I was at a press event in Osaka playing the release Wii games, there was not one that approaches the fun of playing Ridge Racer online, and more than once people said to me that they wanted to get out of there as soon as poss to go work on their RidgeRacer ranking:)

And most importantly, forget the fluff pieces in the Japanese media with game producers saying they are looking forward to developing on the Wii, go drinking with a bunch of Japanese developers and all they talk about is the PS3, and the ones not working on it are seriously frustrated.

For people who can't comprehend the difference between SCE and Sony Music, or die hard Pokemon fans, maybe it is hard to accept, but the Next Gen battle was won and lost 18 months ago when SCE made their pitch and Square/Enix-Capcom-Namco-Konami-Sega decided on which platform to concentrate on.

Yes Pokemon/Mario fans will buy the Wii, and good luck to them, the games industry needs a real second player, but personally I'm not interested in Kirby or Mario games, I want Metal Gear, FFXIII, GTHD and VF5 and they all are on the PS3 which is why I queued up for 40 hours to get one, and won't be getting a Wii.

    Legit?

I'm one of the Brit's who flew to Japan to pick up a PS3, though as I lived in Tokyo for 9 years I'm staying a couple of extra weeks to see old friends. See http://www.psm3mag.com/ I took all the photo's there and acted as the fixer to get the reporter Joel his PS3.

I gave pre-order a miss, got down to Akihabara for 5am the day before, and was second in the queue at Asobit. Despite the issues at Yodabashi and Shibuya, we had only a couple of Chinese in our queue, and they were game shop owners who had flown over, and about 12 homeless:)

The PS3 here costs a lot less than it would in the UK, so the whole trip + PS3 has cost me less than a weekend's skiing and a UK model in 4 months.

I've heard that there is going to be an 8 page report on us getting our PS3 in the UK magazine PSM3, so proof enough I think:)

For what it is worth, a couple of notes from someone who actually owns a PS3...

The launch titles play infinitely better than what was available at the Japanese PS2 launch

Mine has been running 20 hours a day since I got it home, no over heating, no game skipping, no crashes.

It's a big beast (I nearly dropped it when I was handed it over the counter as the retail box weighs a ton), but runs pretty quiet compared to my original Xbox which I only use as a MythTV frontend.

No Linux yet as we are waiting on the installer, but the good news is long term it will be possible to install any distribution that supports PPC (out of the box it supports Fedora). Bad news is that as pretty well all hardware access is via the hypervisor/virtual devices, there is no access to the GPU - yet.

Despite the wishful thinking of Nintendo/Xbox fanboys, the games I own are ALL on BluRay.

It's a really nice bit of kit, for me being able to buy a Cell dev box for 300 quid is an absolute bargain, and a fraction of what I paid for my Arm and PPC box's - and then I get to be able to play Metal Gear 4 and FFXIII too?

If you can code, are interested in non-x86 processors, and can afford one, it's a no brainer - get one.

The difference was that when FFVII came out, everyone I met in Tokyo who didn't have a PS1, bought one, it's that simple. From high school girls to Taxi drivers.
There is nothing in the Wii line up that an non-Nintendo fan would be interested in. Another Pokemon game? People will be queueing round the block. The xbox might have a 100 exclusive titles, but they will all be pants - or they wouldn't be created for the xbox in the first place.

I really don't give a monkeys who makes my console, I just want good games to play on it, and on that list every single one of interest is on the PS3. Oh and I get to install MythTV and use it as a set top box to replace that wheezing old xbox - oh ok PS3 for me then.

    Wrong. Completely wrong
The console gaming world revolves around the demands of Japanese gamers, that wasn't 4000 random Japanese, that was 4000 Japanese gamers.
The highest selling console in Japan will get the premium games. Yes Japanese games. But we are talking consoles, on the PC I play mainly US games, on consoles I've never played a US game in my life.

I guess you are American because there is zero interest here in London in the Wii. UK stores started taking pre-order's a week and a half ago now - the one near my office (Game) in a major shopping center put up a poster on the first day saying 14 pre-orders available, it is currently stuck on 12. The store two doors down (Game-Station) a few months ago took PS3 orders, nothing in the window and when I went in there an hour after opening they had 30 pre-orders.

    Square/Enix
    Namco
    Sega
    Konami

Those names ring a bell? Those companies will ONLY release their AAA titles initially for the PS3.
And before you start whinging on about stuff you read on a gaming news website, let me point out that I've worked on projects for all 4 of those companies in Tokyo, and have seen up close how those decisions are made - I was there when a certain MS employee gave his lecture to Namco staff on why they should develop games for the original xbox and when he was nearly thrown into the street:)

Yes you will be able to play all the PC ports you want on the Xbox360 and half-arsed ports by Japanese companies who have had cash thrown at them, and yes you will be able to play Mario Vs Pikachu 17 on the Wii, but for people into console gaming there will be only one choice.
