    Use WICD. Seriously, it is superior in pretty much every conceivably possible way. Don't bother with the repository version, search the site for version 1.5.

    This is true. It is really nice to have something work "out of the box", but if I still can't make my laptop come out of standby after fighting with it for 3 weeks, something is broken...

    Not to mention if you release a deb/rpm/targ.gz/pkg you only have to recompile 4 times (plus 64 bit, etc) and they will typically work forever. But with windows, you may only need to compile once, but you are REWRITING the entire program's bottom layer every fucking time a new version comes out!

    I've got a friend who goes hunting on a regular basis. When you are up in the mountains in very cold weather and there is no AM/FM, you seriously want something that is going to keep working. It gives him something to listen to while at the camp site and he will get any weather alerts, etc no matter where he is.

    Would you stop giving the damn ISP's more reasons to slack off on implementing IPv6!!!

    ISP's need to upgrade, that's a fact. If people start tunneling IPv6, he ISP's are going to say "Hey, they've already got it, why the hell should we spend money to do it properly?"

    That's from memory. In college I would open minesweeper, set it to the most difficult (custom largest with only 9 non-mines), then proceed to beet it. I actually had a kid I babysat convinced I was psychic. The best part about it is that it is so subtle you can do it will lots of people watching and they can't tell!

    Let's just say I was known as the king of minesweeper for a couple days ;)

    If you are using encryption (hopefully full-disk encryption), how the bloody hell is this "death by text-message" program supposed to get executed?

    Every time something like this shows up, slashdoters always recommend 2 this: encryption and dial-home applications. The problem is, unless your computer has no password, they are not going to be able to use the computer and will shut it down and reinstall as soon as they can't log in! That leaves you about 3 minutes to locate and remotely destroy the laptop. The only other way to do this, would be to send the text-message before they start it, have the computer dial in before the welcome screen even shows up and self-destruct then.

    Anyone who gets past your encryption is not going to be executing the programs on your hard drive through the normal startup sequence!

    While I agree with you (I disable it on ALL my systems), just image Joe Bob phoning Blizzard bitching that noting happened when he put the CD in the drive!

    But then again, I also believe that banking sites should authenticate to YOUR private key, that credit cards should have rolling pins and that it should be illegal to run windows on anything that handles security or financial information...

    While all these ideas seem sane, practical and necessary to me, the average person would become irate when they find out they can't just use the last 4 numbers of their phone number for their windows machine, bank pin, corporate login system and the key to their child's soul!

    Ok, point taken, but you still get the convenience of having standard adapter ports. iPods don't have USB, standard DC plugs, AV-Out, a Compact Flash reader, did I mention a replaceable battery?. The cables are pretty cheap, and it is nice to be able to use the same connections for all your devices. Not to mention being able to get replacement parts anywheres, including Europe, Asia, Japan, etc.
