    Yeah, I'd have to agree. Windoze is easier to get going initially. If your hardware isn't supported, you'll still be able to use it, if not very well. I can't exactly say that for X (or the kernel in general). However, Linux does surpass WinBlows after you finally (!) get everything in order. Unlike Windoze, 'nix doesn't really care what version of the filesystem or how many partitions you have. Not to mention the fact that there's not "prouduct key" to misplace ;-) While Windows (especailly 2k, and ME [i assume]) is very good at auto-detecting and improvising with hardware, Many distros are coming closer and closter each day. I suspect by this time next year, nearly every linux OS will be as good if not better than Windows in terms of installation.

    Mabe it's not so bad! After all, Corel is one of the more "corporate-mindes" distros. They'll have HR get on the trail of a replacement soon enough. I think the guy could do much more as a supporter of some specific projects than as an employee of Corel.

    As far as I can tell by reading the article, the IT Manager/ Software Critic in question doesn't seem to be of the Ubergeek sort. I'm sure that if he was a REAL high-level manager in the networking field, he world have set up his servers in beowulf clusters instead of the implied "proxy/eithernet" idea. If he had used Samba, he could have even gotten his WinNT machines in on the excitement. A wise Vulcan once said "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.". This also applies to high-capacity servers.

    The one major problem with Windows NT/2k (besides being slow, annoying, etc...) is that it gives you very little control over your network settings. For every help file, there is at lest one section of "contact your admin for details" BS. It's very difficult to make up your own IP/Domain,etc. settings when you need to. I know from experience, and I was only connecting 2 computers! In conclusion, Linux (UNIX in general) gives you much more control and thus less networking headaches. Did I mention its more stable?

    I've just gotten an Athilon Thunderbird which at it's current speed of 800MHz is about 1/4 faster than a P3 at the same clock speed. Since the FSB is at 200MHz (much faster than current SDRAM memory), Users of this chip won't have to deal with the losses resulting from using non-rambus technology. However, it would be kind of cool if RAMBUS actually did work 100% correctly.

    Of course you can't, but... With any luck these new computer chips will be so advanced that you could have a watch powered by a 1GHz Athilon Thunderbird. Think of all the cool things you could do with it: Take notes, calulate stuff, get the wheather, [remind yourself to buy an umbrella]... Mabe It'll run TurboLinux ;-+

    No. What I think he's trying to say is that the linux version is not to hot right now. after all, it's beta and it's not like linux is AOL's top priority right now. Personally, I really do think AOL sucks because it's only dialup and it has bad coustomer support. Also, they limit you and stick you with adds, which is very controlling. Kind of defeats the 'Net's purpose, if you ask me.

    I'm willing to bet money that this is just another one of CrackerBill's plots to make it impossible to run any OS other than Windows on your computer. Even partitioning doesn't always cut it. I has SuSE last year and guess what. Winblows decided to expend it's swap file bast the static (not dynamic) partition and destroy 'nix in the process. Ironically enough, it destroyed itself too, so scratch one for Free Software ;-}

    As most of you probably know, especially those of you who have used it, Windoze is an overpriced piece of garbage. While rewriting the OS may be possible, it isn't really worth the developer's time. If I were them, I would try to reengineer some cooler operating system such as OS/2 or Tru64 as they are much more reliable and functional systems anyway. +, they would be great additions to the ever-growing Free Software repository ;-)

    It's true that we've been waiting for NS6 for quite a while. Developers want to be able to write quality code, and users want the benefits the developers provide. However, we can't trash Netscape THAT much. Until Internet Explorer 5.5, IE was one of the least standards compliant browser on the market. Event today, M$ adds extra IE-only add-ons such as ActiveX and DCOM, both of which are cheapo APIs pirated from open standards a while back.

    Netscape is probably just in a slump right now because of bad management and the popularity of IE. This situation is similar to IBM's issues between it's Warp OS and Windows. However, unlike IBM, Netscape is almost guaranteed to revive itself and be up to standars very soon.

    I'm so glad that Palm decided to add more memory by increasing RAM from 2 to 8 megabytes. Now it's on the same level as my '95 x486/DX laptop which runs FreeDows, a much inferiour OS to what Palm uses. Great. my 1200 dollar (in Jan, 95) system is kicked by a 500-odd dollar overclocked BookMan(R)!

    No, I think that both of you are right to one extent or another. Nvidia may or may not be pushing its prouducts on reviewers, but it's nearly a 100% chance that at least some companies are doing this. Personally, I don't think highly enough of the company to really pay much attention. I'm a Voodoo purist in the fulest sense ;-)

    DVDs will always be controversial. I've read that there will soon be a Napster-like system called Apple Something that will allow users to transfer videos and other non-music media. I'll bet HollyWood is mad about this development ;-)

    I think that Corel made a good move to get rid of the GraphicCorp division because they desperately need to cut costs. Until their linux distro becomes more popular, they will need to remove themselves from all the divisions they do not need.

    As most avid car enthusiasts know, the EV1 was a "beta release" at best. According to many owners, it was a good idea, but not as good in real life. The EV-2, which will come out in November, I think will be a lot better, both in efficiency and in cost. Will it be as good as the insight, or better? Also, can it compete in the Honda-dominated small economy car market?

    Of course, unlike Winblows, Linux (as a whole) can't certify every piece of hardware out there. That's why I think there should be Distro certified hardware instead. (for example, SuSE supported would have a chameleon) This assures buyers that the hardware will work on specific versions. This eliminates wild, untrue claims and makes it easy to get set up. Hardware vendors would most likely strive to make more linux compatable hardware and compete for more "badges" from distrobutions.

    If this new technology is real, won't the refresh rates and screen resolutions be really bad?

    I mean, if this is based on printer technology, will we only be getting 12-16 frames per minute ;-) What happens when the batteries run out? Will the user have to prime and reset the thing?

    I've been using ICQ (Windows) for about 8 months, and it has had the same policy all the time. "Anyone under 13 cannot have an account. If you're found to be 13, you'll be terminated..." It may be new to the various GNU/Linux ports, but It's VERY old news for ICQ users in general.

    The reason for this is probably pretty simple: no one has ported the .doc format entirely becase it is fundamentally a DOS API. Unless you have the core code for Word, it would be theoretically impossible. Also, since the practically OWN the software industry (GNU excluded, of course), they can boss everyone arround and assimilate the competition. If the Tech industry was StarTreck, M$ would of couse be the Borg. Windoze software boxes would be their cubes.

    I've been using StarOffice on Windows for quite some time. Not only is it free, but it's much more powerful and scalable. Plus, I love the integration it has with the various programs, such as StarWriter and StarCalc. It may not be under the GPL (yet), but at least Sun does not force it on you like the Evil Empire does. I've unloaded all MSoffice programs except for Word and Excel because I sometimes get docs in that format.

    The've had IE for UNIX for quite a while now. They are just trying to place a monopoly on everything they possibly can. My suggestion: get Netscape/Mozilla.

    Though they may not have secured the server itself as much as they problably should, *BSD is fairly secure as it is. The firewall was probaby there to reduce the workload on the server itself. If it was not in place, the main server would be much slower and more insecure. Luckly, they got it under control. Stupid cracker spammers. As if the hacking community didn't have anything better to do.
