I personally happen to think that making it illegal to incite people to commit crimes is a perfectly reasonable curtailment of free speech.
This is already a crime. If it can be proven that you incited someone to kill or physicaly hurt someone, you are also held responsible. So, just how much more do we "need"?
There are quite a few ways to fight hate and racism. The best is not to be taken in by it.
This is also good sentiment, but let's face facts. Most (I would hazzard to guess 98%) people are idiots. They believe anything someone tells them (Geocentrists, Flat Earthers, Scientologists, etc). So, now what?
I'm kidding. I congratulate you on your very insightful first post. I (unfortunately) already posted to this discussion, so I can't moderate you up.
This is a typical reaction that I see on/. People start going off half-cocked. It makes me wonder if anyone even bothered to read the article. From the posts, it looks as if the UN will be shutting down all sites that it finds offensive immediately.
Free speech, like any other freedom, needs to operate within boundaries.
Who determines these boundaries? Politicians? Jerry Fallwell? Tom Metzger? You? I mean really, who determines what I write or say, or what you write and say?
In fact, I distinctly remember a teacher that I had in high school who was very proud his copy of the "Far Side" episode which featured a kid pushing as hard as he could on the door that was boldly labeled "PULL". It was funny.
What made this comic so funny was that the school door the kid was pushing on was to a gifted school!
The Honored Matres, if I recall correctly, had, by and large, some degree of physical control over their own bodies
Some control? They had awesome control over their bodies. The BG's feared the speed of an Honored Matre attack, and the HM's were extremely skilled at sex.
You are assuming that because you know some bright 15 year olds, that they all must be bright and responsible.
Come on, when I was 15, there were maybe 3 in my whole school who were even remotely responsible for thier age. So, by your logic, we should treat all 15 year olds as responsible adults?
Please don't be offended if you are 15ish. Just take a look around yourself at school and then tell me if all your peers are as mature as you.
I suppose that this argument could be applied to all age groups (I personally can think of several other 31 year olds that are quite immature).
I am firmly commited to not making a commitment! - me
Interesting...as a Non Commisioned Officer in the Army for twelve years, that's a new one on me.
The Armed Forces of the United States must adhere to the laws of the place (state, host nation, etc...) where they build a base. In the case of stateside posts, the drinking age on and off post is 21. While it's true that alot of bars let in military members regardless of age, it is still illegal.
I'm not advocating the 21 year old drinking age, but it is a myth that persons under age are allowed to drink on post.
Forgive my ignorance, but is widescreen the same as HDTV? If it is, I remember hearing on PBS that they were going to start broadcasting in high def very soon. I also heard that ALL U.S. television stations were to be Compliant by 2003 I think.
Then again, I could be wrong:)
My computer needs a valium; the kernel keeps panicking!
At long last, it may be possible to delete ALL MS products from my computer. As you know, games are the only reason that are on most of our computers anyway. Viva Revolution!

I get the same thing. It refuses to properly render kde.themes.org. It looks like crap and frequently just crashes!
Oh well :P
Is this the new 'BoneFlower' Bill of Rights I've been hearing so much about lately?
Have YOU actually read the Bill of Rights?

I thought this post was pretty good. These are exactly the thoughts that went through my head when I selected my wife.
Just want you to know that not everyone of us is so sensitive as to take your story WAY out of context.
BTW, my wife enjoyed your article, too. She unsderstood what you MEANT! :)
