    linuxers should organize carpools for these things. that way, people who live all the way out in the forest (read: canada) can attend these things. thats the spirit the linux community needs! not only that, the cars (because of the nerds) would have mp3 steros! yes!

    ... are very important tools in the reprogramming of our youth today. if you want to change the public's perception of a figure such as tesla, either edit, or create textbooks with appropriate content.

Response My grandma could do that in her sleep, and she's dead! Company A did nothing special. Besides, there was a paper written at an obscure university ten years ago which made reference to something like what is described.

    ... that you should stop hyperventilating over some company's practices... if you can't get your sh*t done in macos, then get a linux box (you could even make a *beowulf* cluster!!). Everyone... even you, I assume, knows the macos was/is a _consumer_ os, not a techie os.

    I heard, on some reputable news source like TLC, that the Space Station is going to use, or is using, 286's. Because of the custom (and good) programming for the systems, they (the 286s) can be fast enough. Wowzers!

    P.S. - How can the Shuttle astronauts use their pentium portables?

You seem not to realize that the symbols in question are only symbolic for.... blood and gore and guns and missles and other blow-uppy stuff (NB-I know that the origin of those particular symbols don't have those connotations, its just that they have evolved that way). Come on now. If you like Quake (as I think we all do), then you must know that the 666's aren't the only things that irk a christian conscience(sp?)

    One little question - is the game really 500mb? yeesh! Back in my day... :)

    After reading about the control-apple-option-n thing, I tried it on OS 8.6, while going into the Apple menu, and I found "About the MacsOS 8.5 team" - in fact, you only need to press "control-apple-option". Anyway, enjoy!

    I'm not sure if it has been done yet, but it would be quite helpful if an AI could 'evolve' along with the language (because, as we all know, language changes all the time) based on monitoring of user-editing of the post-process text. For example, if at time 'a' it was programmed to translate 'Cool' to 'Froid' in french, it would (after monitoring the changes made by users) learn to translate 'Cool' to the french equivilent of 'hip'. or something. 'cause, dammit, i can't wait until the AIs take over ;)

    ... considering the pace of development; in the field of biology alone, there's an entirely new text and theory to teach, and that's only being taught in Kansas. I think we should just be happy with what we have elsewhere, and not expect every new theory to be taught :)

    The solution is simple... just make a holodeck, a la Star Trek! I'm sure that, given an open-source project, backed by a beowulf cluster, the problem of hard holograms could be cracked in a year or two. The motivation? The chance of meeting the girl in the red dress yourself ;)

    ... about the iMacs revs a-c; for awhile they were the only computers with USB. As the only way an owner of one of those iMacs can attach peripherals is through USB, USB is a sound investment for all types of peripherals.

    This type of activity by companies seems to be more common now; Apple did that amazingly stupid thing with the G4s, and then responded to consumer backlash, and Real is doing it now. Seems like:
    1. Companies are becoming more bold with their plans, and
    2. Consumers are becoming angrier, faster

    It dosen't seem to me like there was ever, or ever will be, any real difference; the complexity of chips must increase over time as new functions are added. Every once in a while, someone will say "These are too complex! Let's design a new chip, but give it a minimal amount of instructions! We'll call it Reduced Instruction Set Computing!". Basically, like most other things, it swings like a pendulum.

    Perhpas this is the time for /. to take the initiative, and create the first multilingual website.. think of it, it'd be like the altavista translator, but automatically done on the server side, according to cookies, or for unregistered users, ip! hmmm.... what one comes up with at such hours!
