It would be supercool if the iPods etc had dynamic loudness. If you listen at a lower volume, a certain amount of compression is highly desirable. However, if you listen at a louder volume, compression wrings the life out of the drums and the piano etc.
So, why not just stick it into the players? In three years time, the music biz can produce proper-sounding records, knowing they will sound cool both at louder and lower volumes.
Of course a 1960 Chevy truck was more sturdy than a 2009 model. It's in the nature of things to become more fragile the more versatile they get.
Not at all. The 2009 Chevy Truck is engineered to be less sturdy. Why? Because a less sturdy truck requires less material to build and will therefore be cheaper. Y'know, most people tend to buy the cheaper of two equivalent products while flagrantly disregarding lifetime cost of the product.
We don't have enough arable land on planet earth to fully convert from oil to biofuel.
Furthermore, it's a physical fuel that must be grown (on land, using fertilizers, pesticides and farm machinery), processed (expending energy) and then transported (expending energy).
Biofuel is only cheap because of gullible (or corrupt) politicians.
Huh? Playstation Store and WiiWare both carry low-weigth, fun titles from "indie" studios. I don't have an XBox360, so I'm not sure what's going on there..
Is it proven that some specimens stay away from humans while others are unafraid of ut? What's the average lifespan of a croc? And is "stay-away-from-people" a dominant or recessive gene? Is it even a single gene?
"A few decades" is probably a bit optimistic..
But then again, if we don't kill those that get close to humans, we will effectively give the non-shy specimens an advantage. Hmh.
I am hesitant to download free stuff to me mobile that hasn't been checked for malware. It would be wise to require some modicum of accountability from the developers whose app you sell - if you were to spread malware you'd face on huge PR storm..
Nobody knows where Amazon will be in 10 years. However, it seems unlikely they will go under in such a way that all files are lost and cannot recover.
I've uploaded close to 100gb of RAWs onto amazon s3, and the bill is not frighetning.
However, I also keep a local copy on my current harddrive.
For me to lose all my data, I will have to both experience local failure and amazon failure at the same time. Though this is technically possible, I think that nuclear holocaust will leave me with larger problems than the loss of my files.
When comparing two computers, consumers go for the one with best numbers most of the time. They have no clue what harddrive throughput is, and even less clue about seek time. Capitalism provides the goods that sell, not the best-engineered goods (unless they sell better.. )
I bet the worldwide consumerist harddisk space utilization is about 15%, but most people don't realize this. Unless people have magically wised up, we won't see widespread SSD in laptops until they catch up pricewise.
Agreed. I guess Nintendo needed the Wii in order to regain the initiative. They plainly did not have the research resources to both keep focus on the performance cycle and creating the wiimote. Hopefully the Wiii will display pretty graphics on our 40+ inch 1080p TV sets!
I think it's pretty obvious the poster is a bit confused about the terms. I just went along with the poster's terminology in order to explain why rather than inform him he's an idiot.:)
We who know what we are doing are free to take the risk of running our computers without a swapfile.
Most people are not in a position where they can be sure that they will never run out of physical memory. Because of that, all operating systems for personal computers set up a swapfile by default: It's better for joe average computer owner to complain about a slow system than for him to lose his document when the system crashes because he filled up the physical memory (and there is no swap file to fall back on).
That's right. None. Running an AV program on a Mac makes about as much sense as using a rope to tie down your car every time you park it in your garage.
With the Apple market share increasing, we're becoming a target. The bad guys don't want to wreak havoc - they want to profit. We're becoming an attractive target. The bad guys want to turn our pretty, easy-to-use Macs into pretty, easy-to-use spambots and/or phishing hosts and/or
If they could somehow bundle their malware with commonly used software for OSX that requires us to enter a password, then that'd be an attack vector. Or maybe subvert the mechanisms that require us to enter a password before installing system software? Or how about using two holes in combination - first attack some library, and then have the uploaded software install itself using a second hole.. Remember those security updates we're receiving? Before we installed them, we were vulnerable to some exploit. Luckily, Apple is mostly ahead of the bad guys though. But if they slip up?
And you know, I doubt is necessary to have the malware run as root to steal your identity or simply spam the internet..
I'd wouldn't mind if Bush was gangraped in prison over his presidency and his crimes to mankind and western civilization. However, the execs only did as they were ordered to do. Is punishing people for failing to stand up against the law a good policy? In a democracy (or republic with general elections), the right thing to do is to expose the laws and the politicians and then hope the public will care when they vote in the next election.
Consider that emissions from gasoline cars damage our health and most likely our environment. Then consider the geopolitical mess created by the oil addiction. All of a sudden, a subsidy for electric cars makes a whole lot of sense. Of course, subsidised electric cars should be combined with building environmentally sound powerplants.
Then we, the West, might get somewhere. And hopefully Asia will follow.
I'd consider running the web browsing session inside a virtual machine. That's both more secure and more practical. :)

That definitely belongs in there. Sorry, Linus.

So that's why American asses are so fat, they never take a proper beating!
Ya got me there. I'm from Norway..
Bravo, you misspelt "cities" in two different ways! A good day for humankind indeed.
I, for one, welcome our new overlord egyptiankarim.
People get off on raincoats too. Should Facebook prohibit all pictures of people in raincoats, then?
In addition, my harddrive must crash-n-burn at that exact time. I keep local copies, as I'm not a teenager nor a Republican.

It's better in the long run to write unit tests for your code, than spending time re-implementing what others have done for you.
The cars will be storing the energy in their batteries. That makes them ideal for using renewable energy.

Indeed your metaphor stands. But remember, the climate is changing. The likelihood of car-sucking tornadoes it on the rise.

The execs did as ordered by the politicians.
