I agree that basically these internet companies are trying to leach of the consumer without creating any viable technology, simply leaching off the consumer.

probably not :) it takes light 8 minutes to reach the earth, and say u used this and it transmitted at 4c (4 times the speed of light) then you would simply see stuff from the sun in 2 minutes rather than 8

what ACTUALLY happens at super-luminous speeds is theoretical though.

I always wondered...say you have a REALLY rigid pole (please no jokes :P) and it spanned from here to say the Sun, and you yanked on that pole, would the information (the force of the tug) exceed the speed of light or would you have to wait 8 minutes for the opposite end of the pole to move (i think itd be instantanious, for example, spacetime is not bound to 'c') can anyone tell me? :)

Maybe you ought to figure out that things like the DMCA really only protect record companies and their cash flow...any real artists is concerned less over their cash flow and more over the integrity of their art; thats one reason a lot of Linux programs are both free AND high-quality, because these people CARE about what their doing, their not doing it just to pay the bills!

okay i can see where an artist might like these things, but i have a beef about some of your linux comments:
    [rant]
"I fail to see what this has to do with shareware products like Linux". Linux is not shareware, if anything its FREEWARE, free as in speech (free source code) and free as in beer (costs no $$ to legally obtain).
"I once used Linux 6 myself". Linux 6? Perhaps you mean RedHat 6.0, RedHat is not Linux, its just a Linux distribution...they have their own versioning scheme, totally independent of the linux kernel, which has ITS own versioning scheme.
"nor understand why anyone would be willing to revert to DOS". LINUX IS NOT DOS!!! just because it has a commandline (optional to use - for the most part anyway) does not mean its some simple-ass command interpreter like DOS is.... Linux has a HUGE plethora (is that redundant? :P) of programs that exploit the power of the unix command line. If youre ever in Linux again, try typing 'ps -ef' (minus the quotes of course) and you will se a swath of programs running, as opposed to DOS which cant naturally handle more than one program at the time. Try reading about Linux and the power of its command line interface :)

  17. an interview with my mom on SuSE clarifies "Linux on the desktop" Statement · · Score: 0

while on AIM, I asked my mom what SHE liked in an OS, what made it easy and even pleasurable to use. Here goes:
"i want fast on, reliability, easy to figure out operating system, files that don't require me to manually install (like DOS). i like platform compatibility, so i can use PC and mac files back and forth which [Windows] sux at. i like being able to customize my visuals and sounds. i like being able to delete programs easily if i need to or want to. i LOVE the heirarch of files that apple offers, again not on PCs."

"you mean like System Folder etc?"

"yes so i can have files open and be able to look thru the 'pages' or see what other pages are in the folder. the PC drives me crazy with its file system...or lack of it"

she kept going (hehe), but you get the idea...if youve used a Mac (as my mom does) these kinds of things are a breeze, and altho the Mac sure has its faults, and she DOES notice the on and off hang or freeze, she gets a lot of simplicity in it. As far as systems like that, BeOS is probably a close second, which I might install on her system.

She also clearified that Linux GUI designers should do useability testing w/ Average Users (sounds like SUCH a corporate thing to do, but it makes sense).

java2 seems to have a nice foundation, lotsa stuff to work with, and compiled into native object code would really speed things up.

I have to agree though, that OpenStep, err, Cocoa is very nice, considerable more so than just about anything else I've seen, but many people seem reluctant to use Objective-C (well, apple developers will just HAVE to use it now =] )

swing is what i'd use for any GUI apps, however, and although it's GUI isn't perfect, a lot can be done with it and the stuff I get for free from it sure beats the hell out of developing it all myself :P Besides, although ObjC/Cocoa apps can be on a handful of platfoms, Java is on anything it gets ported to :)

there is also a /dev and others such as /etc and /bin are symlinks from /boot/

under /boot is system/, etc/, develop/, and other stuff that has a more modern way of compartmentalizing system files and programs
