If you've ever watched NBC, you've used Microsoft Products.
If you've ever bought a GE product, you've used Microsoft Products.
Most people are clueless about the world of bizness. Hey, most companies will merge or enter into a working agreement or arrangement with their bitterest rival, competitor, enemy, etc. if there's a way to make money. There are actually companies out there who've never developed anything of their own, but have been smart enough to buy up stuff that's good. That's not only in computer arena, but in everything.
How do you expect GE, IBM, Proctor and Gamble, etc. got so big. It's the acquisitions, stupid.
Although I don't have a DSL problem, I've had problems with PacBell. It seems almost from the time they merged with SBC, they've gradually (or maybe not so gradually) merged, thinned or otherwise laid off staff. I don't know if they laid off the tech's, but the people who do the grunt work (answer phones, post payments, etc.) are gone. You're lucky if you can get anyone to answer the phone. They've gone pure menu/automated phones, and if you get lucky and get to a real person, they're (pick one: gone home, on a break, out of the office). If you're lucky enough to get one that responds usually the people are helpful..the problem is getting to that point.
They also fail to respond to email (contact us page at their site), and letters mailed to them.
Guess it has something to do with the price of stock or the bottom line or something, but service sucks at PacBell.
In California we have the CPUC, so my present problem I've turned over to them. That's California Public Utilities Commission. Actually, they're pretty responsive. I don't know if you can turn a DSL problem over to them, because I'm not sure if they deal with data problems, but if it's service, then you probably could.
This typecasting of people never gets old, does it. Note the number of posts.
I agree with the dude who said "I believe I'll have another drink"

A very good post; people united for a common cause sometimes make strange bedfellows. I admit ego sometimes is a hard thing to overcome.
'I can't work with Jones 'cause he's gay!' or similar rants are not going to get you anywhere except fighting among yourselves. If you have a workable goal then let that be the cause that unites you. Anything else is secondary. You can work with gays, liberals, converatives, Texans, hillbillies and geeks. As long as you're united in the important cause.
Recently, I was involved in an online group seeking to halt credit card abuse (the hiking of interest rates willy-nilly) and the people who joined our group were from every walk of life: from religious conservatives to Ralph Nader. It was great. We filed our suit and got the job done. It was a great lesson for me!

Sun wasn't mentioned; there you gotta buy the hardware and the software. I see Sun as becoming the next MS. Notice too, their stock has been going up during the current NASDAQ debacle. Maybe MS oughta buy them!

You say,
"But here's the deal: The rich created the government, including the whole *concept* of government in the first place. No poor farmer in the middle of revolutionary America thought "Yes, let's overthrow the British aristocracy, and replace it with something a little more close to home." Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, Madison, etc., were the bourgoisie of the time, and thus imposed their ideas of a government on people who had just helped them revolt from the last one."
I am of the opinion that the bourgeoisie (correct spelling) are the middle class, not the rich. In Marxist theory, it was the bourgeoisie that were opposed to the 'masses', not the rich. You, somehow have linked them together.
Red Hat isn't dead, see (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/000406/nc_red_hat_1.html) . I don't always think the 'stock price' actually reflects the value of the company. It might have something to do with prestige, but the money generated by the IPO stays with the company. The stock price just affects shareholders. Red Hat seems to be a pretty quality company and have not, like Linuxcare, had problems at the top. Linux may not be ready for the desktop soon, but in the server area it's going great!
What would a cracker want with home computers. Seems they are more interested in crashing commercial or govt sites. But it wouldn't hurt to be prepared. I usually leave my computer on day and night (for scheduled updates, downloads, etc.) For that matter is there anything quick and dirty to protect me against (h/cr)ackers?
Wasn't the 50's about the time that 'progressive education' began. We began to not teach, but to make children feel good and accepted. If Susie is 8 she should be in the 3rd grade, whether or not she can hack it. It's easier to pass them, than for the child to endure all the questions as to why she was 'put back'. The beginning of the demise of education, at least in California, where I live. I'm not sure that the religious or private schools followed suit, as they didn't have to deal with this problem. You're child can't hack it here, send her to public school.
This is why I rarely read/.! Dude took a comment and created a treatise of major proportions. Whew! I was mainly looking for news about the VA Linux takeover and what do I get? Still a cool site, and I'll keep checking back.
Cool Reply, Ater.
A rich person has a much better chance of getting elected than a poor person, IMHO.
Whoa....how much is RedHat selling for today...and...a year ago?
