As a consequence, hardware manufacturers will be more wary about writing drivers for Linux, and they will have a lower quality than Windows ones. This will lead to the benchmarks (which will only be done on Windows to save money) not reflecting performance under Linux, as we see here.
< RANT > Thats kinda funny:) Have you seen some of the drivers hardware manufacturers have put out for Windows?? They're Horrible. 3dfx has done this, so has Creative. Just to name a few. Especially when it comes to NT or W2k. The drivers aren't very well optomized, totally busted when it comes to SMP support on NT and W2k. And half the time are probably just hacked win9x drivers. I/really/ wish that hardware companies would stop screwing around and open up their hardware specs.. Then maybe a developer with half-a-freakin' brain can write GOOD drivers for windows AND Linux.. hell, through in BSD and MacOS!
After all, they'ld sell more product if they had better drivers then their compitition. Why don't they do this? They say its becuase they're afraid that if they open their hardware specs, competitors will steal their technology and sell it as their own. SO WHAT IF THEY DO? They aren't going to beat you buy selling something as good as yours (same) unless they have something else you don't.. Like service!.. They have to inovate and make something better OF THEIR OWN to beat you.
No one cares about the customer anymore.. its really kinda sad.. </RANT >
Personally, I think people should take anything that comes out of Tom Pabsts mouth with a volkswagon-sized grain of salt. Toms Hardware used to be a very good site, but he's since become one big arrogant SOB. Now, this isn't saying that everyone out there is totally un-biased when doing a review. Thats why its always a good idea to check with multiple hardware sites when you're looking at buying a expensive piece of hardware. See what a few different people think about. Never take just one persons opinion, their point of view may be significantly differnt from yours, and you may not be happy with the outcome.
Some great sites out there for hardware reviews and news:
Also, I like to check the user opinions at Cnet and Sysopt. Its always nice to know what the average person thinks of the product after they've bought it and used it.
Yeah, its not a card that was released yesterday. But I think its a good review of it. As the review mentions, this line of cards were meant to compete with the voodoo3 and TNT2 series of cards. The voodoo3 as of right now is still 3dfx's top offering. The only card on the market right now that is a step above the g400, voodoo3, and TNT2 is the GeForce. And not everyone has damn near $300 to spend on a DDR GeForce;)
I'll be interested to see how it preforms in X too, and Scott (Damage) does mention in the review that he may add Xfree 4.0 info to it at a latter time.
Well, my two favorite games already run on linux. those being UT and Quake 3 Arena:) But I'ld LOVE to see a port of Starcraft and the expansion Brood Wars:) I'ld also love to see Total Annihilation ported to linux, that is a great game.
This isn't entirely correct.. When the first Athlon motherboards started to be relased, there were rumors that Intel was threating motherboard manufacturers with withholding chipset supply if the manufacturer produced athlon boards. Intel couldn't provide chipsets for the athlon motherboards becuase the athlon uses a different bus protocol that AMD licensed from DEC/Compaq (the Alpha EV6 bus) Intel has nothing to do with Athlon chipsets. Amd produces chipsets for use on Athlon boards, and so does VIA. The K7M is available just about anywhere online, and it even has the ASUS logo on it now:) ASUS I think has been afraid that if it markets its Athlon motherboard to heavily Intel will retaliate and cut off chipset supply for ASUS's Intel based boards..
Guys, at least read the article before you post.. This wasn't a "this cpu runs quake 3 faster then this one" type article. It wasn't about the platforms that the procs run, it was about the technology of them, and how they were implemented. It was a very good article, and I suggest you read it.
If MacOS X is going to be basically a unix variant with the MacOS user interface (and none of the crappy underlying old MacOS code) Will there be a port to x86?
Re:Q3 plays great on my machine

Quake3 to go SMP

ok here it is.. Voodoo 1 (voodoo graphics) is a 3d only card that works with an existing 2d video card to provid 3d hardware acceleration in glide and opengl (now)
Voodoo 2 boards are also 3d only, and work in conjunction with an existing 2d video card.. these also are only avaiable in a pci card, however they support more ram then the origingal voodoo boards (8 or 12mb) and can be configured with 2 boards in an SLI (scan line interleave) mode (one board draws the even lines, the other the odd lines)
Voodoo 3 is the latest product, its a single board solution 2d AND 3d.. available in a PCI or AGP format (no agp texturing though) and the 2d graphics processor has a 300mhz ramdac (I think) its available in 3 grades - The 2000 (pci or agp - 3d processor running at 143mhz) The 3000 (agp only - 3d @ 166 mhz I think) The 3500 (agp only, tv tuner - 3d @ 184mhz I think)
They're pretty nice cards.. I just bought a pci version of the V3 2000 and I love it!
As much as I hope this is just an april fools joke, I don't think it is... I think this ones for real.... there has been news up on the pending law suits for awhile now, and as someone else pointed out, segfault went down yesterday, followed by UF and BeDope today... I think this is for real.. and if it is, I think its time to unleash alittle/. effect on behalve of these sites!!! Lets find out who the slime bag sueing them is and/. them into next week! This is just totaly bogus!!!!!!!!!
What about using some sort of piezo (sp?) electronics device to generate the power? I think that is what they use for those self powering watches, and K2 makes a ski that has a circuit in it... (bunch of marketing hype) It supposedly uses the circuit to transform vibration into electrical energy which lights a little LED on the ski.. supposed to help with vibration damping.. but the circuit is really small... I'ld buy a self powering liberetto that you never had to plug in!:)
I have a PR440FX board with dual ppro 180's (256k l2) running at 233mhz each.. with 196mb of the edo/ecc buffered dimms.. I got the last 128mb in the form of 2 64mb dimms about 3 months ago, and they where only around $72 each or something like that.. I ordered them from www.pcboost.com
They have good memmory at a good price, and this system is as fast for most things as my p2400@448 that I run at work.
Umm, Just becuase Windows and NT dominate the market place, it in no way means they are better or even good. It simply means that Microsoft has a monoply over OS's (right now). out of the few ISP's around here, a couple use Linux/BSD and a few use NT... The NT managed ISP's all suck rocks, but I never have any problems with my ISP that runs everything on Linux.
Its funny how people can take the fact that NT is on more computers to somehow mean it is automatically better then anything else..
This kind of crap makes me sick. In case you didn't realize it, ars-technica are the people who did the article. if you think its crap, tell them. don't bitch about it to the/. people. They don't write the articles. I read the ars article before it was posted here, and although its not the best review, it is pretty good. The PIII is worthless as far as i'm concerned right now. I would much rather go out and buy a C300a and save ~$700.. for god sake, I can practicaly build a whole new 300a machine for the price of a pIII... If you want to go out and buy one, great! but you're wasting your money.
I've worked tech support for an ISP as well... my God, who could have thought there where so many stupid people out there... Time to add some chlorine to the gene pool I think..
yeah, but still.. what self respecting linux user would even remotely consider touching frontpage with a 10 foot pool! Frontpage is about the most worthless program on the face of this planet... The messed up HTML it spits out is a discrace! I can spot a site generated with frontpage from a mile away....
Let this be better then Batman and Robin... I don't see how it could be any worse.

something tells me you'll get nominated for a darwin award someday :)
