I agree that the "3rd wave is nothing more than common fraud. All the internet is doing is providing a larger faster more anonymous way of distributing fraudulent information.
As in the saying "A sucker is born every minute" the internet provides a larger NET to catch the suckers.
Today DD/MM/YY (date of last announcement plus one month) we announce the introduction of the Pentium X(increment the last number by one)that runs at XXXXGhz(increase Ghz 15%). This processor is the most advanced one that exists! It be available to the general public at an affordable cost in 36 to 48 months (maybe). At that time we will have released the Pentium XX that runs at XXThz (terra), which will be the most advanced processor ever built.
Having done several courses from many certified masters ( Novell & Cisco ) I have found the following.
The instrutors are very kowledgeable and smart people.
The instructors tend not to have "real world" experience. They rely on the class.
I have learned computers from the basics of hardware and then progressed. I find the basic classes from xxx company very good to inform me on how they think and what their product offers.
Very seldom in the process of trouble shooting have I been outclassed by the guys with a lot of certification letters behind their name.
Experience and common sense is worth more than a bunch of letters.
Don't get me wrong.. I believe in education, but I don't believe in using certification as a club for sorting job applicants.
The French Atomic Energy Commission has placed an order for a supercomputer to simulate and analyze nuclear explosions. So when you turn on the 2500 Alphas the explosion is the magnitude of a nuclear device?;)
Actually the Mainframe Software costs are the killer. Sure the hardware initially costs a lot, but the on going software costs are what REALLY make the box expensive.
Why do you think people are embracing Linux on the BIG IRON.
According to are http://www.indo.com/distance/ the geek compound should be located at 42:46:18N 86:06:08W (Holland, MI). Now if someone comes up with the coin we will be able to look in CmdrTaco/Hemos backyard from space.
At 1 metre resolution I doubt that we could see CmdrTaco's plaid shirt!
I did the test when I was in college (RCC) and was amazed to find that 90% of the class was either ISTJ or ESTJ. People of this profile seem to be attracted to computers.
I worked as a hardware tech for eight years and I am currently a Network Analyst. Again the majority of the people I work with scored the same on the test.
We are well rounded people with many interests, but computers are the common thread.
I use it daily for FTP and TELNET 3270 host access.
Plus I use ADSM for server to host back-up. Nothing like having a couple of terrabytes of DASD to back-up to with the ability to archive to automated tape library.
Katz has again gone and done the impossible. He has turned a simplistic "Look what Jane's and/. have accomplished together" that should maybe be a couple of paragraphs into a massive article.
He obviously has missed the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)factor.

Jack: We have just implanted the sensor into the rare and dangerous white male horn rimmed computer geek.
Jim: The tracking of this species was alot harder before we had ADS technology.
Jack: We will now release him into the urban wild.
Jim: Look he is heading towards his place of employment.
Jack: Hold it! He has changed directions. He is heading towards the bar that has the FREE BEER sign outside.
Jim: Interesting behavior!
ETC....
I'm scared.....
/.
A logical post regarding M$ on
More scary: I agree with you.
Don't automatically mix ignorance and stupidity.
Ignorance can be corrected if the user is willing and the tech. person takes the time.
Stupid people are unable to be cured.
And your point is ????
Flouresent lighting, among other electrical sources and RF sources have been known to cause hardware interference.

As a Canadian I can honestly say that I trust Jane Stewart as much as I trust Bill Clinton.
Clinton did not inhale and Jane did not mis-manage 1 BILLON CANADIAN DOLLARS! (600 million US) NOT!!!!
It upsets me that they have a databse containing all of my information, but it really pisses me off that Jane is in control of the information.
Damn it I'm going to have a beer and try to forget I ever read this.
Very funny.
A PC with a standard 100mb ethernet card only really uses about 25% of the 100mb bandwidth. This is a NIC card design limitation.
7 PCs on a 100mb CAT5 hub would most likely be a very fast network, unless all 7 PCs were trying to ping each other to death.
CAT5 if properly installed can support gigabit ethernet, so you have a lot of expansion room before you need fibre.
This is just plain corny :)
Really,
What personal hardware platform do you use for runnning Slackware?
What is the perferred hardware platform?

Just my thoughts as a raised floor dweller.

Yes the S/390 does dupport TCP/IP

Let me get out my chunk of stone and chisel. Somebody hand me a mallet and I'll write you a message.
I agree that plain text email is more virus proof, but the masses have already past that point, hence no turning back.
No I have not read 'cryptonomicon'...
I meant this is a massive article with out very much substance.
I quite enjoy in-depth articles with alot of substance.
Nothing personal Mr. Katz
Katz has again gone and done the impossible. He has turned a simplistic "Look what Jane's and /. have accomplished together" that should maybe be a couple of paragraphs into a massive article.

I stand corrected.
Intel tries to patent a sequence of numbers (x86) and loses the case, hence Pentium (tm).
Patenting a click sequence? This doesn't make sense.
Why doesn't Cisco patent the IP routing concept?
Patenting should be retained for the new, unique and conceptual ideas in technology, not the MINOR improvements.
