Um.. last time I checked my GF2MX was almost 2x as fast as my 8500LE in Linux... I guess if you want to pay and have worse performance that's up to you. I'd stick to ATi for Windows and nVida for Linux right now.
ok.. let me put it this way.. it's not *THAT* dangerous out there.
When was the last time your computer got "pwned" and not just portscanned? Yeah, it's nice to be secure and personally I take precautions... but seriously, how often do you actually get hacked?
I would easily believe over 75% of home computers are using Windows 98 right now and haven't used windows update in over a year, if at all.
I think people make a bigger deal out of "insecure" computers than necessary. Yeah, it's nice if it is secure.. but your computer isn't going to blow up when you connect to the internet.
Wait, I know. Try this: Install Windows 95 on a computer and connect it to the internet without updating it.. then get back to me when it's hacked.
You are also free to carry on using Windows 95 today... oh, but it's been EOLed, so no more security patches - hope you don't need to access an untrusted network, like, say, the Internet.
Yeah, that sucks... my Windows 95 laptop gets hacked every day it connects to the internet through my BSD firewall...
I don't understand what you mean by app vs. OS vs. hardware.
Try this: Add Dvorak mapping to your keyboard layout. (In WinXP: Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> [Languages] -> Details... -> Add... -> United States -Dvorak) (In Win2k: Control Panel -> Regional Options -> Input Locales -> Add... United States - Dvorak)
Now open explorer (which MS has stated is part of the "OS") make a file, and try to delete it. When the confirmation box comes up press "L" on your Qwerty keyboard all you get is an error beep. The Qwerty "L" is an "N" with Dvorak mapping--open notepad and mess around to easily find out all the mappings. Now hit the Qwerty "N" (Dvorak "B") hmm, works doesn't it? Why in the world would you have to hit "B" to say no?
That is what he is getting at.
I don't think you can argue something like that isn't a Microsoft problem. Explorer is definitely their responsiblility as is the Regional settings app in the control panel.
A better solution might be to address the issue at the driver level. Use the Qwerty setting but simply have the keyboard report letters in Dvorak thus everything switches over.
I could be wrong, but I think he was implying MS should do this.
"...check the computers memory and use a special boot option. The memory's ok and the boot option didn't work, so I'm now waiting for their next question..."
"The new update checker is convenient but very buggy! It crashes a lot and after updating, the checker's icon still signals you to update."
"But many applications are missing and a lot of hardware is not recognized, e.g. my pcmcia network card."
You sure that machine's CDROM drive is good? From what you said it sounds to me like similar cases I've had where the files don't get installed properly because the CDROM isn't reading the disk correctly. I put in a new CDROM drive or reburn the CD and it works fine. In this case since you say you have 8.2 Pro I'd assume they're pressed CDs, and you say you have it running on another computer, this would lead me to believe it's the CDROM drive. Even if you don't have problems with other CDs, I'd at least try a different CDROM drive in there to see if it works.
As far as the first half goes I don't know what to tell you...
That's how democracies work.
The thing that you don't appear to be taking into consideration is that the whole concept of what is "right" is very subjective.
In a democracy, we determine what is "right" based on the opinions of the majority of the people. You don't see your view as "wrong", the majority doesn't see their veiw as "wrong" either. And maybe that's the problem. We use words like right and wrong, when it's impossible to be either way. Think of it more as "the majority opinion" rather than the "right" thing.
Now, here's where the protests come in. When people protest they are (usually) trying to draw attention to their views, and make people understand what they believe. If they can reach enough people, and get them to change their views, "the majority opinion" changes, and thus so does "what's right".
For example, I'm a vegetarian. I know I'm in the minority, but I personally feel eating meat is "wrong". Most people disagree with me, they think that eating meat is the right thing to do. If I were to protest and make speeches and convince enough people... it could (theorhetically) get to the point where more than half of the population thought that eating meat was wrong.. thus putting me in with the majority opinion, and changing my view from wrong to right.
It may seem like some things are cut and dry right and wrong, but if you really get into it, there's nothing that can fall into the "always right" or "always wrong" categories. It's all just a matter of opinion.
There's also the matter of greed and other issues of human nature when dealing with politics. And I think that's what you were talking about in the second half of your post. I'm not going to argue with you on that, I don't think it's a good idea for a person that has more money to have more of a say in our government than someone without. (assuming the only reason they have more say is because of money)
Now, that being said, if you've got a better idea for a government I'd like to hear it.
If you look at the larger pic (click on the small one) you can see that it is just her zipper on her jeans. On the top is the button, then her zipper is about halfway unzipped.
I read an interview with an AMD employee who was talking about the SMP capabilities that the K7 would have, they said that since it is running on the ev6 bus, it'll be able to support 16(I think that was how many it was) CPUs. Sorry, I don't remember where it was at. I'll look at a couple hardware sites I frequent and see if I can stumble onto that... if I do, I'll post a reply with the URL.
"www.microsoft.com is running Microsoft-IIS/4.0 on NT3 or Windows 95" is that some kind of error? maybe because they are running some totally mutated version of Windows NT? Or is Microsoft really using an older version of their own product?
That attitude can only make things worse - it's like saying to kids "hey your little problems at school are unimportant and meaningless, and you'll agree once you get into the real world".
No, actually I was encouraged by it. I am in high school right now. I'm a senior and thanking god that I am almost ready to get out. It's been nothing but a load of crap. People telling you that you need to get involved in sports and have school spirit or something is wrong with you. I have a social life. I go out with my friends on the weekends. I just find sports boring. I was getting tired of hearing stuff like that all the time and thinking of how stupid everyone is for putting emphasis on things that have no relevance to anything. That message did not "make things worse" but helped assure my hopes that it does get better in (yes) *the Real World*.
How is a kid supposed to feel when you tell him his ENTIRE WORLD is some little meaningless thing that he will forget about?
Well, I don't know about other people, but I was *glad* to hear it.
Is he supposed to feel better that every day of his life for the next five or ten years is going to a fiendish hell filled with torture, physical assault, anguish and hatred?
I wish I would have known that coming in to high school as I'm sure it would have helped me be more prepared for it. And also more encouraged by knowing that the rest of my life would not be like what I was experiencing in high school.
He's probably spent the last 10 years of his life trying to learn Microsoft products and is now starting to get a handle on them. I don't know this, but I'm guessing, seeing how he is obviously a little slow.
Now that he's spent 10 years on Microsoft, he starts seeing the tides changing. "Oh NO! Now I'm going to have to put my little brain to work learning a NEW operating system?... Well, I could sit down and learn it, which means it'll be at least a year before I can type up a document, I'm just so dumb I can't figure out how to use those word processors as fast as 'normal' people. Oh, I know! I'll fight it off! If I can convince everyone that Microsoft is clearly superior and make people hate Linux programmers for supporting Linux instead of channeling their efforts to make MS software better, then I won't have to use my pathetic excuse for a brain! Yippee!"
I took a Lexus from the dealership last night. I couldn't really afford to buy it, but I'd like to see what it's like to drive one. I'll probably return it after a couple of weeks, so there's nothing wrong with that.
1: it IS ok, as long as you tell the dealer you are test driving it. (but he probably wouldn't let you keep it that long because someone else might want it)
2: if there was an infinite supply of Lexuses and you really did just want to try it out, why would the dealer have any problem as long as he's confident you'll like and use the car? (as I said, if I actually use I pay for it)
I wouldn't pay to watch HBO, but I have a converter box that gives it to me for free, so that's okay, too.
Yeah, it isn't taking anything away from them if you really weren't planning on watching it if you didn't have the box.
I didn't like your previous post, so I'm going to track you down and put a bullet through your head. I don't see it as murder if the person I kill annoyed me, so I'm sure you won't mind either.
I think this one kinda goes along with the same Lexus arguement. If there was an infinite supply of me, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But since there IS ONLY ONE of me, I would appreciate it if you just left that SINGLE COPY alone.
If you would pay for it if you couldn't get it for free it's wrong.
If you wouldn't use it, unless it's free, it's ok (illegal tho).
Basically, morals. I see it as stealing if I get a full version game off the internet or burned from a CD and then it's something I use all the time. So if I download something like that, and I use it a lot, I go out and buy the retail version.
If it's something that I wouldn't use if I didn't get it free, then it doesn't matter to me.
My rule is: Ask yourself, "If I was forced to delete this and never be able to get it for free, would I go out and buy it?" If the answer is "yes" then I go out and buy it.
*NOTE* I am not saying that this is the way anyone should act, this is just the way *I* see it.
He said that he didn't solder the 9 keys in because he needed to be able to plug a standard keyboard into it to perform upgrades. I'm guessing that's where the floppy might be used. And anyway, why not?:-) A floppy drive is only about $10 to $20 and it'd probably come in handy for those 1 min. songs you want to play every once-in-a-while.
The Logitech TrackMan Marble series has been doing that for quite a while now. I have the original TrackMan Marble sitting on my desk right now, the best mouse device I've ever used!:-))) I think M$ has done something new (maybe... there IS some chance that they might have) and the way they are marketing it, it sounds like it just takes a picture of the surface it's on and compares it to the last shot taken. The only problem I see with that is... what happens when you run out of deskspace and have to pick the mouse up to get more room to move? If it takes 1500 pics/s then it'll be able to tell you're moving it... hmm.. maybe they *did* steal logitech's technology.
I'm only half-way down the comments (nested-order by score) and I've seen you say this same thing about 3 or 4 times! For the love of God! Just post _ONE_ toplevel comment, and quit filling up my screen with this crap. --Question-- Does anyone know if there is an option to filter USER comments from the comments page? If there isn't anything: ROB can you please put a section in the preferences page where we can enter the user names of people whose comments we want to filter out?
It worked on the first release of 95, OSR2 and above disable CTRL-ALT-DEL when the screensaver is running.

Heh.. I guess if "decent" is Geforce3-level 3D performance. Sadly, nvidia is currently the only option for high-performance 3D in Linux.
