  1. Re:Rat from a sinking ship? on Dave Whitinger announces LinSight · · Score: 1

In view of the number of ideas Microsoft have borrowed from Unix over the years, it's obvious there are people in Bill's company who really are specialists, maybe more than in many another Unix-using or Unix-developing company. The only programs Microsoft make a cock-up of are Microsoft programs - but of course, they have their reasons for that :--)

  2. Be careful, Roedy on How To Write Unmaintainable Code · · Score: 1

Interesting article, Roedy, but you ought to be careful because I'm under the impression that a lot of the techniques you mention here have already been patented by a company in the Seattle region.

I know this is off-subject, but Slashdot readers, will you please, please all learn to spell "definitely" correctly; repeat after me: D-E-F-I-N-I-T-E-L-Y. Thank you. Now I can sleep more easily.

  4. Advice on Carmack on the retail Quake3 for linux · · Score: 1
Print the word "LINUX", or "Mac", or "Atari" (those were the days) as big as the word "QUAKE" on the boxes and incrust the word with flashing LED's so that people who don't read Slashdot don't walk exasperatingly and ignorantly past the product in shops that make no effort to put it on display. The great thing about the Amiga-Atari rivalry days was that with both factions being roughly equal, there was half a shop for each, so there was little chances of missing out. Linux games are more often bundled in with Linux distributions.

That said, at least they're easier to find than DVD ROM's in the shops.

  5. K for Killer application? on KDE 2.0 in Action · · Score: 1

Has anybody any data showing a correlation between the appearance of KDE and the increase of Linux's popularity? I imagine KDE could be more responsible than any other application for the crossing of the credibility threshold (as far as popular use is concerned).

  6. What's good for the goose on Pentagon Says Improper Image Morphing is War Crime · · Score: 1

Can anybody come up with a way of using morphing to prevent a war? And if they did would that be a war crime? And if using morphing to end a war saved lives, would that be a crime too? What is a crime, in fact? - I always thought it was killing that was wrong; I seem to have got my values mixed up somewhere.

I never realized that Jerry Pournelle was such an arrogant bastard. Judge Jackson is as qualified in his field as Pournelle in his, and it's pretty certain that Jackson has done a lot more studying of this subject that Pournelle has; what Pournelle is saying is therefore 'I'm so f**king brilliant that I can understand a whole situation with only a tenth of the information that the learned judge has. Hail o oracle!

  9. Re:Keep your Red Hat on. on The Post-Microsoft Era · · Score: 1

Can anybody really honestly see the day when Linux is on everybody's desktop? I reckon the product that will eventually replace Windows has not yet been written. Much though I like Linux, FreeBSD, etc., for their philosophy, I feel that your man in the street is still better off with a buggy but unmysterious system than with a superior but esoteric and incomplete one. So keep your (red) hat on for the moment. Microsoft has a defective but very saleable product. Be realistic (and sad).

  10. Re:Penguins on Linux on a Magazine Cover? · · Score: 1

Did you hear about the day Tux was driving through the Arizona desert at noon and his oil light came on. He pulled in at a roadside garage and left the car for the mechanic to look at and went to the joined-on diner. There was a big bowl of ice cream on the counter, which Tux, being from colder climes, found a godsend on this hot Arizona day. Of course, penguins don't manipulate spoons very well so he soon had a mess over his beak and chest but he didn't care since he was used to that. He finished and went back to see what the mechanic had found. The mechanic said, "Looks like you've blown a seal." "No, no," replied Tux, "it's just ice cream."

So, Mr.Dell, now you've nicked Compaq's place, are you going to do any better than them and actually innovate, or are you just going to ride the PC system until it dies a death then jump on someone else's bandwagon? Someone's going to have to take the frst step ... will it be you?

  14. Fire with Fire on Sun Microsystems acquires NetBeans · · Score: 1

When there's not much room in the compartment, you have to barge your way in, whether Linux or cream cheese or anything else (along with its fans) exists. Sun seems to have just discovered it has elbows.
