Look at their profits, I dont think the mainstream music companies give too shits about Napster... People have always pirated music in one way or another. I believe this is just a smoke-screen to cover up the fact that they are shitting their pants that such a forum exists, because it means one day a lot of bands are gonna get sick of being screwed in the ass by these guys and are gonna do business online... They have to strongarm vendors into supplying the OS without question. Apple does no such thing. It doesnt have to. It makes the boxes.

Its like saying Commodore had a monopoly on the C=64 basic, because it came with the machine. The MacOS is a integral part of the machine, not some afterthought like Windows or Linux. Same for Commodore/Atari/Apple in the old days. You bought the entire package.

Human beings have always grasped 'theories' as 'facts'. Try to tell me that God and Creation was not 'fact' a few hundred years ago... It is human nature to pick our best 'theory' and present it as fact. It allows us to move forward, without worrying about details which would hold us up.

Creation/evolution is the same thing. Evolution is currently our best theory, and we hold it up as fact. The fact that the human race has recently aquired the need to 'investigate all options' is probably to our detriment. This is why religion still exists today. We cannot prove either 'theory', so we attempt to support both.

We would move forward as a race a whole lot faster if we did the 'wrong' thing, and didnt hold up several 'theories' at once, always second guessing ourselves and wondering which is the 'correct' theory. Obviously, in this situation (creation/evolution), it is highly unlikely we will ever prove/disprove either theory. Oh well, tough luck, choose one and move ahead.

Have you heard the saying 'any direction is better than no direction?'.. Well, it seems the human race has chosen 'evolution' as our 'fact'. Wrong or right, it is the path we should follow. Sitting around debating creation vs evolution won't get us anywhere....

I will send $$$s to anyone willing to challenge this in court... not because I own one of their cards but a) they have infringed the GPL, and their response is less than satisfactory and b) open source drivers are always good, and now we have a right to the source for their driver, we should seize it...

Ask yourself, if you were to rip a section of their code (by reverse engineering or whatever), would they be so understanding??? Even if they removed the driver immediately (which they are not) the work they have supplied is a derivative of GPL code, and thus they *have* to supply the source to anyone they supplied the binary to.

Optus will be offering ADSL around the same time, and probably some of the other telcos will jump on board.

What this means is ADSL is not far away, and there will be some competition which will (hopefully) drive prices down.

Only problem with ADSL is that you have to live close to the exchange (no problem for me, I live about 500m from the Craigie exchange as the crow flies) and according to my mate who works for NDC, the boxes at the exchange end are rather large, something like 10 connections per rack... Im wondering, since Oracle accesses these raw devices directly (implementing its own minimal 'filesystem' (although my friend here still maintains it is not a filesystem)), would it not be more efficient to write a minimal OracleFS driver for Linux, and have Linux service the Oracle calls? I can see arguments for both sides, where Oracle avoids Kernel overhead by accessing the device directly (although the kernel must allow this to happen, and hopefully would have some for of check in place), and on the other hand having the FS driver running in kernel space would have to be more efficient that Oracle's user space 'Filesystem' driver, but this adds another level of complexity.

Has anyone looked into this? Theoretically, which would be the most efficient approach? I know that this 'Oracle Filesystem' driver doesnt exist, but would it be theoretically possible to implement?
