meerling was describing the implications of the system setup, as any engineer should, and used the term "Death squad" to describe the predicted outcome. It doesn't seem to be far off, as shooting people seems to be a startle reflex for US police. It's not like this in my country, and it doesn't need to be in yours either. The first two of the following links describe a baby and a toddler being shot by police. The third makes the point that when police are given military gear, they start behaving like soldiers, instead of the civilians that they are. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/he... http://www.salon.com/2014/06/2... http://www.popularmechanics.co...

I've lived in the US on an H1-B visa - it's not hearsay to me. Despite portability provisions allowing workers to move, the moving positions is time-consuming and costly. It is illegal to be in the country the day after employment ceases, meaning that there is no legal way to organise your affairs appropriately if you suddenly find yourself out of a job. The system is set up in a way that supports the anecdotes given by Just Some Guy. If it is more helpful to you, then consider those stories as "use cases" (plausible ways of interacting with the system) instead of "anecdotes" (hearsay that should be dismissed because it is hearsay).

The claim is not that the H1-B is indentured servitude, rather that the restrictive nature of the H1-B puts the employee at a significant disadvantage, even with the portability that you mention. Having been there and done that myself, I can tell you that I had job offers I could not take up because of the H1-B visa restrictions.

No, streaming does not make results look better. Countries that stream early, such as Germany, have found that while their top tier do very well, as expected, but the PISA results from other tiers do not perform as well as they might. It's partly due to early streaming greatly disadvantaging migrants, who might have caught up to their peers in higher level maths classes had they had the chance. PISA is not about heavy maths, it's about numeracy. It tries to measure the maths and literacy skills needed to navigate in modern society at school leaving age across a population. The countries that look better than they should are the ones who exclude large segments of the population from schooling at all (like excluding girls or particular minorities or rural populations from education). There you have children who become adults who are innumerate, but are not measured by PISA. As these countries start to educate their entire population, they will look worse before they look better.
