  1. Re:BeOS IPO on Be, Inc. to go public? · · Score: 1

    Okay. I'll point it out.

I like using Linux because it has all my apps, and it supports all my hardware. BeOS probably would too, I tried booting it once, and what I noticed was the striking similarity many of the components had to Linux. Bootup, LILO, you name it...

So why couldn't it be more compatible? How about more free? Sure, you can compile a lot of UNIX stuff on it, but not everything. They apparently support a lot of the old baggage in the kernel, but not enough to really get the cross-platform source-compatible benefits.

Multi-threading libraries. Isn't that what glibc2 is supposed to do? Multi-processor support. Don't we have that already? A Media OS. What about The GIMP? Sure, BeOS might have some advantages here, but I don't find it compelling enough to switch.

I also find it offensive when people use open tools and don't contribute back their changes. BeOS did fix this mistake, somewhat, but it isn't even close to open. Sure, I'd use it over MacOS X, but not over Linux.

And yes, I find built-in GUI's offensive. How do *they* know that I want everything to look like that? People argue that this leads to a "consistent user interface", but that won't stop people from writing their own applications with different styles of interfacing with the user.
(Winamp. KAI Power Tools. There. No 'consistent user interface' on Windows or the Mac. Ha ha ha.)

I hope BeOS steals market share from Windows, but seeing yet another closed-source commercial OS struggling for dominance doesn't make me feel any better about it. I used to write DOS commands that essentially did functions that basic UNIX system utilities do just because I thought there was functionality lacking. No more will I make excuses for a vendor when I can get something better, or be allowed to do it better myself.

Also, I'm going to get a TV card for Linux. Why? It's cheaper than getting a 17" TV, and neater, too. :)

  3. Nothing new... on The Emerging-Behavior Debate · · Score: 3

We've known this about AI for some time now. You can find examples of 'emergent behavior' in simple games, like Conway's Game of Life.

From a few simple rules and their interactions, much complexity springs. It only takes maybe 12 rules to do predicate calculus, (not much PROLOG at all :) but whenever I do it by hand, it seems much harder...

The problem is that not everything can be neatly quantized into rules. That's the problem that the Cyc project has always faced, and they're probably closer to getting a self-learning system than anyone is.

I would love to see AI produce results, I'm sure machines could think and solve complex problems, reason and reach conclusions as we do, but just encoding the basic knowledge we take for granted is a huge task, and trying to make a machine with the capability of doing all of that itself is an even larger one.

I think we're just seeing someone who isn't informed, that's the only explanation I can come up with... I think it's likely that if he's seen Linux in action, it was a friend struggling with an *old* version of it...

I've seen Linux perform better than Solaris as a desktop, for a third the price. If Linux isn't better than Microsoft's offerings, then UNIX isn't either, and I'd be amazed if Ken said that.

I love UNIX, when I found SunOS I knew I found something far better than DOS. Linus knew the same thing, and modeled early versions of Linux after SunOS. In this respect, it was a backlash against Microsoft, because they made a crappy OS for the PC, that Linus didn't want to use.

However, it was more a backlash against commercial UNIX vendors, because Linus wanted a good, free, x86 UNIX (not Minix), and at the time he couldn't find one.

However, IMO Linux has now far surpassed the commercial UNIXes, *and* it is free. It certainly isn't suitable for every job, but just from what an average distribution ships with these days, it is a far better value than a commercial UNIX, or anything that Microsoft has to offer.

As they show, the actual belief in a God can be kept completely separate from the morals that the religion also teaches.

I don't believe in a God because I don't think it's rational. If I had a good reason, maybe I'd change my mind. However, I live a fairly moral life, because I think it's right, and that's what needs to be taught to avoid situations like this.
