Your just assuming that interactivity heightens the intensity of the violent experience. The actual research on this doesn't actually point that way. The British classification scheme concluded that Violence in video games is less impacting then sequential mediums since your actually controlling an avatar which distances the player from the experience because you are always aware your controlling a character. Personally I believe future research will reveal video games heighten certain experiences and diminish others. Two very simple example's would be; the violence in God of War in a film would be horrific and terrifying where as its nigh comical in the game. Silent Hill in a film wouldn't be scary at all where as the game made me crap myself.

"A intellectual property holder has a right to control their assets just as much if not more than individuals." And I'm yet to be convinced piracy does anything but benefit the intellectual property holder. As an artist in any medium, your job is to get your material as much exposure as humanly possible. The more eyes the better. A producers's job is to find a way to make money from all these eyes. If you don't know how to do that, you shouldn't be in producing.

Tracking people is not only unethical because "people like there privacy". Its a larger issue than that. Thomas Jefferson; "God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ... And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure." And personally I believe if you treat a society like children they will begin to act more and more like one.

Companies do this by paying the publisher money - not the developers. Developers do have some power, especially successful ones, but the publishers still hold all the keys to the kingdom.

I think the focus should be on better quality games with less player time. I think 5 - 8 hours is an acceptable amount of single player content, granted with that I would also expect a price reduction. I don't finish 90% of the games I buy anyway, not from lack of skill, but because they are low quality with repetitive set pieces and are drawn out to meet some self imposed demand that games requires 20+ hours of content. Multi-player of course is a different beast altogether, but with a full time job, family, a social life - games with more than 10 hours of content just aren't that feasible for me like they were when I was a kid or at University. I'm sure I'm not alone, and we are a whole market yet to be exploited. Honestly, I suspect if you make games 5 hours long, cost half the price and focus on quality not quantity with a diversity of topics (ie not *all* War, Sci Fi and Fantasy related) - the largest (as yet) unexploited market will emerge. I'm sure this market might not include many people here, but there is no reason why we cant have different products to accommodate different markets.

The development team is more important to me than the end result. I enjoy watching a developer grow professionally and artistically through their subsequent releases. Just like some film makers, certain developers for me have earned a place where I wish to experience everything they produce good or bad.
