  1. Bandwidth Usage Caps Suck! on Time Warner Cable to Test Tiered Bandwidth Caps · · Score: 1

We have bandwidth usage caps in Australia and they suck big time. It varies between ISPs, but some charge additional fees (usually not too much) for exceeding bandwidth, but most cap the speed down to a ridiculous 64kbps! For someone like myself, who often exceeded usage (especially given that the bandwidth cap was so low), it was unbearable. My bandwidth cap was just 6GB when I was stuck on an ADSL1 plan due to lack of support for ADSL2+ at the exchange; the ADSL2+ plan for the same price was, I believe, 40GB (split between peak and off-peak periods, giving 20GB each). Even the 40GB was too low sometimes when I was able to get ADSL2+.

Public domain isn't the worst at all. Personally, I release almost everything I create into the public domain cause I really don't care what people want to do with it and it's easier than messing around figuring out which licence to use.

Since attribution is a moral right that isn't lost by releasing things into the public domain, I don't really see much practical difference between that and an attribution-only licence or really permissive licence like MIT. Although, I don't really care if people give me attribution or not either, but most people who've reused my stuff seem ethical enough to do so anyway.

Although it certainly had it's problems, at least Win ME was usable. Vista gets in the way of absolutely everything! I have never been so irritated with an OS in under 5 minutes of use, until vista came along.

Using a friend's laptop running vista, logged in as an administrator, trying to copy harmless files from a public folder on my mac to the my documents folder on vista was forbidden. I had to copy to my Win XP machine first and then from there to Vista. Once tried to use ipconfig /release and /renew to fix a conflicting IP address, but it gave permission denied error! I had to explicitly select Run As Administrator from the context menu to get elevated permissions just to run ipconfig. Bloody oath! Also, the windows explorer UI is so bloody awful and unusable, it's not even funny.

Seriously, if my only choice was ME or Vista, I'd go back to ME any day. But luckily I can just stick with OS X Leopard and Win XP.

It made me seriously question whether the photo shown along side was actually the phone they were talking about. That thing is seriously the ugliest phone I've seen in a long time and reminds me of something from the late '90s. Seriously, how could anyone possibly look at that phone and think it's even remotely inspired by the iPhone/iPod?!

"A buttonless facade"??? What the? There are 7 buttons plus the wheel on the front, plus another 20 with the keyboard pulled out. Maybe I just don't understand what "buttonless" means these days".

  11. Re:NBC Direct and missed opportunity on NBC Direct Launches With Free Downloads · · Score: 1

It's quite likely that NBC has existing deals with various broadcasters in other countries and if NBC started releasing their content directly to consumers in those countries, it would devalue that content for the broadcasters. How many viewers are going to bother watching the show broadcast on their local network when they've already downloaded and viewed the episode 6 months earlier directly from NBC? Of course, this is already starting to happen anyway with Bit Torrent.

What the networks should do is simultaneously distribute the shows to their own regions with their own local advertisements. So basically the same as the traditional model, except the broadcast medium is the internet and there's no 6-12 month delay for those who can't wait to see it on TV. (Although there may still be a delay for those that need dubbing or subtitles done for local languages, but even those regions should release the English-only versions immediately).

  16. Re:Excellent! on Finally We Get New Elements In HTML 5 · · Score: 1

Actually, the article element and the other new sectioning elements are also important for the heading level algorithm. When used, the heading level is determined by the number of nested sections, not just the numbered heading element. So you're no longer restricted to the 6 levels provided by the h1 to h6 elements and you no longer have to worry about changing the heading number when moving content around. e.g. An article on one page may begin with a 2nd level heading, but on another page, it may need to be a 3rd or 4th level.

The other advantage is for authors, since it's possible to replace dozens of div elements with other appropriate elements, it makes it easier to maintain the code because, for example, it's easier to match up a <article> with </article>, than it is to match up <div class="article"> with the correct </div>, especially when there are many divs used.

No-one knows for certain the answers to the universe. Like most things in science, it's a theory. There's obviously some evidence to support it now, but it's always possible that new evidence will improve our understanding of the issue. It doesn't matter that we will all die long before this ever occurs, it helps to satisfy our curiosity.

How will this affect your behaviour today? Will you re-think going to that club? Will you pick up an extra piece of litter? Will you go and buy up all the compressed helium you can find?

It's not about that at all. It's about learning and improving our understanding of the universe, not providing immediate benefits to our everyday lives.
