  1. Bah! Bite my shinny metal ass. on Generation Wrecked · · Score: 2, Funny

First we were "Slackers" who were good for nothing and completely disolutioned.

Then we were the "Uberkind" that could do no wrong, defied the establishment, and were successfull in spite of "how the previous generations had set us up".

    and now...

We are doomed to a fate of financial ruin...so bottomless the pit into which we have fallen because of the ".com bust".

Bah! I am pretty sure that we...(if you can call it a "we"...I have never been all that sure about clasifications) will continue to do what we have always done about the "world" arround us....Give it the Finger and get on with getting on.

As some poster mentioned, it doesnt seem he is trying to figure out if this would make him rich or support a /corporation/. It sounded as if he was currious as the feasability of funding the bandwidth through adds for at least local places and maybe some larger vendors. Nothing major. Seems to me the biggest problem would be creating a piece of software...cross platform, of course....that would allow for this with no easy run arrounds.....of course since its for a small area...with a relatively close community....you might be able to rely on the honor system....i.e "just dont get arround the banner adds in the software because this is a free not for profit operation for yours and everyone elses benefit kind of thing..so be cool and let the banners be". Which I dont think is an entirely unheard of thing. that said, it might not be too hard to get local shops restaurants to participate now that so many are becoming web/net savy. give them a way to offer up to date specials on the spur of the momment("Till 9pm tonight, one free beer with purchase of Chicken Dinner. At Joe's Chicken Shack!" or "$.50 Kamikazee shots for the next hour @ The Lounge !"). If you get time donated from some of the college geeks for maintenence, and get really lucky some how on a couple of AP's and antenna's....then it seems a few hundred dollars a month is all you would have to generate to cover the bandwidth. Seems like a pretty neat project for a couple of CS students to tackle.

    Dunno, just my .02

  4. Two good reasons together make ..... on Root as Primary Login: Why Not? · · Score: 3, Insightful

    ....an even more significant reason:

1)As root you have the ability to not only do damage to your own user files...but you have the ability to damage/destroy the whole system. Being a user on a UnixOS is one of its beauties. No matter how bad you screw up as a user, its only your files...the system will still be there.

2)OSX runs a number of Microsoft Applications....i.e. the Office Suite, and Outlook...which are notoriously prone to security problems.(albeit, quite a bit less on Mac)

Mix those two reasons and you get something like Windows, where one script sent by email, clicked on by an /uneducated/ user(and sometimes not even clicked on...just received by something like Outlook) while logged in as root....and poof there goes the whole machine....lucky, at least for the rest of us cause at least that users box is gone.....or really unlucky for the net community at large if the virus/worm/et.al. keeps the machine and starts doing nasty self propagation.

So, just dont do it. There is so little a regular user needs root for...and for that Apple has provided sudo....built in from the start.

Ok, so lets form a union so that our obsolete jobs don't disapear.

Thats just silly. If you want an idea of what unions do to a tech industry, try getting DSL in most parts of the US. You think it takes so long cause the "phone company" doesn't want to do it?

    Nope.

The Phone Co unions are 90% of the problem. I had to work with them, to help straighten out their networks for DSL. I was there to be nothing more than a thorn in the side of union workers, cause they couldn't even be convinced to work well with other CO's within their own company.

There have been cases where union were good for a while, but let me tell you, in an industry where if you don't like your job that you can spend just a litle time improving yourself and end up with a better job....no, unions aren't the answer.

Sure, HellDesk sucks....BUT it IS the bottom of the food chain. What do you want, there is no such industry where the bottom job doesn't suck. But this ins't some industry where it takes 10 years to lean a new skill(by the way, in a union you would not be allowed to learn/practice a new skill if it threatend one of your "brothers" job), it takes months or a year to be proficient enough to get a job.

If you don't like your job, then move on. If you are on Hell Desk, and you don't think you can move up....well then its time to think about a new career. Remember, unions were invented because the ONLY employer in town was abusing its employees, and there was no way to get another job. That just isn't the case.

If it were the old days and it was Orwant and the rest running the mag...well, I wouldn't really care(I would trust them to make the effort). But this is a corporation we are talking about. Sounds like they are holding on to a piece of their business that is making money and not providing the service....seems like fraud to me. Which is what bothers me about this situation. I might contend this. I would argue that increase in population with decreased ability teach/supervise/mentor/care, not violence in the media is to blame. Violence has been arround for a long time in the media. Starsky and Hutch was a great TV show in the early 70's, so was the MOD Squad. Both quite violent, lots of shooting, lots of death. Maybe not as graphic as today, but the body count was still there. There were lots of others too. Sure Rap music is violent....BUT, the hood isn't violent because of it.....IT is violent because of the "Hood". So now this, another bandaid. Most of these things could be reduced my something simple, but something no one wants to pay for. Lowered student count per teacher, across the board, better wages for those that teach our children. Sure, a lot of teachers are terrible, but its either cause they are burned out from working 80-100 hours a week while making well under the middle class wages, or they are undereducated because who is going to go 100K in debt for a degree for a job that doesn't pay diddly. Instead, its just another quick fix. Its a matter of responsability.....and we as a country are not taking it seriously.
