My 2012 Samsung Galaxy Note II, a flagship model in its time, hasn't received a version update since 2014 (it runs KitKat). However it still got a security/stability firmware upgrade in 2017, and does get "Security Policy" updates (guessing these are SELinux changes). This isn't ideal for anyone who wants new features, but 5 years of security and stability patches is not so bad.
If it was cheaper to fix the code, they would fix the code. Clearly it's cheaper to ship many millions of hardware devices with insecure firmware and eventually, maybe, perhaps, pay a pittance to the tiny percentage of a tiny percentage of customers who notice and care and stay interested in an esoteric class action lawsuit about a company they can't name and a product they hardly remember even owning and which on cursory inspection seems to work fine.

It's very pleasant to be reminded that some people and organisations seek to create frameworks, laws, habits, methods etc. that anticipate and preempt those mindsets and situations. I use it every day because it is a perfectly decent phone and also happens to be the one working smart phone I own (also have an original Note I with smashed display). The only thing it lacks *for me* is hardware HEVC/H.265 video decoding. I might head to ebay and upgrade to a 2013 S4 just for this.
My 2012 Note II runs Android 7.1 thanks to LineageOS. It works fine and it gets weekly updates (security patch level is 5 August 2017) so I'm satisfied using it for shopping, banking and so on.
It is old hardware though. When the earphone jack got crackly and contact cleaner no longer did the trick I had to spend £2.50 on ebay and get and install a new part. When the original battery got weak I had to buy a new one. When the body of the phone got to looking *really* worn out I spent £13 and swapped all the guts into a new chassis/case. The display is still pristine.
So, no need for a new phone but am occasionally considering a newer used phone.
All the money I save I spend at Franklin Mint. Waste not want not.
Because the people of that democratic society have rejected the death penalty for all crimes except the very most serious.
If you'd prefer a society which enacts arbitrary death penalties and executions then you could try standing for office on that platform, or lobbying, or campaigning. Or you could go apply to live in China, N. Korea, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria or IS or similar. Have a nice trip.
