Amazon Files For 'AmazonTube' and 'OpenTube' Trademarks As Fight With YouTube Gets Pettier (theverge.com)

"Amazon applied for an 'AmazonTube' trademark earlier this week, according to a filing found by TV Answer Man, as the company's public feud with Google over accessing YouTube content on Amazon's devices continues to escalate," reports The Verge. "While there's not a lot of information about what AmazonTube might be, based on the trademark application's description of 'providing non-downloadable pre-recorded audio, visual and audiovisual works via wireless networks on a variety of topics of general interest,' it sure sounds like a YouTube competitor." From the report: TechCrunch notes that Amazon has also applied for a trademark on "OpenTube," as well, which, if anything, is a more blatant name for what Google is looking to accomplish here. It's also not the first time that Amazon has been rumored to be working on its own, free video service -- earlier this year there were rumors that Amazon was planning a "freemium" version of Prime Video, although the company released a statement saying that it had no plans to do so.

That's quite a joke. It's hard to call anime a niche market really unless you're squarely looking at just the US. Otherwise, it's a rather substantial market in Japan, Korea, China, and Europe (although the latter has their own animation traditions).

Most likely the projected increase in subscriptions from expanding the selection wouldn't outweigh the increased costs.

The same could really be said of most of Prime Music and Prime Video. It's still quite a joke to me. To be honest my real complaint is a lot less that they have such a shit selection as much as they really go out of their way to make it difficult to actually limit your searching within Amazon Prime Video/Music. Just about every type of search will do a "All Music" or "All Video" search. And/or will include physical goods in the list. Or will list $0.00 but will only be for one episode/song. A similar issue happens where "season 1 included with prime" except only a few episodes are included (1, 2, 3, and 5).

Want to actually browse for Anime? Good luck. Clicking "Anime" for genre might not actually list all Anime. Of course, this is a general issue with Amazon: sometimes clicking a department with an item so you can sort will cause the item to not be listed or a higher price variant will be listed instead. Getting to your "Watch List" is a pain. Generally trying to find similar items is a pain. The whole thing is pretty slow and at least the Android app uses images without text for a lot of links which is pretty fucking useless.

In short, it seems like the whole thing is a crippled mess. Perhaps the full channel subscription versions are just as bad, and they're not horrible on purpose for the Prime version? Honestly I don't know. Either way, it's really shit.

It should be interesting. Is this a full-blown FireFox or a stripped-down version?

I'm glad someone is ready to challenge YouTube's dominance, but did it have to be Amazon? I mean, it could be worse, it could be Microsoft or Oracle or Adobe, but Amazon is pretty high up the list of Darth Vader companies.

Unfortunately, it probably did have to be someone like Amazon. The number of entities that can ramp up fast enough to truly eat YouTube's breakfast is small.
