  1. Re:MS tax on Michael Dell Using Ubuntu Linux At Home · · Score: 1

The reason for that is simple.
Due to Dells volume deal with Microsoft, they get windows cheap.
Dell then bundle all sorts of little apps that they are paid to put on the desktop (and that we power users hate so much we uninstall them immediately).
The payment they get for these apps cancel out the cheap cost of windows.
Therefore, to Dell, windows on a machine is free.

The reduced resolution of the wii is compensated for by the lower price (completely ignoring the fact I find the games more fun).

A Palm Vx was the best ebook reader I ever had.
That monochrome screen had awesome contrast and could be run for days between charges, possibly a week if you disabled the backlight.

But I wanted to integrate my phone with my pda so I didn't have to carry so many devices and "upgraded" to an i-mate PocketPC.
Arguably the ebook reading is better because the screen has a higher resolution (320x240 vs 160x160) but the colour screen makes reading a struggle, requiring the backlight on at all times and the battery life is horrible (8 hours constant use at best).
Then there's the other little problems like the phone hanging up on people or never ringing or just plain rebooting the device.

I'm intending to upgrade as soon as my wallet can stretch far enough, and I'm hoping the situation has improved but I'm also trying not to get my hopes up.

On my last major project I was handed a detailed spec which I went and discussed with the client.

I started developing based on spec 2 but when we demonstrated some early milestones we suddenly had spec 3.
My bosses are starting to get annoyed by this point, leading to spec 4, which is being implemented DESPITE the client pointing out things that would have led to specs 5 and 6.
It's a crazy old world when the client doesn't really know what they want, or how to describe it in any usefull manner.
Of course, I certainly wouldn't want to be doing the clients job either. :P

I agree, I'm an avid Pratchett fan, but there have been several novels where there has been a whole "chapter" (interesting considering he doesn't really use them in most of his works) of what I can only describe as bleh.
Blind IO striking Dorfl with lightning at the end of Feet of Clay was perhaps humourous, but not really relevant to the story.
All of the story that happened after the vampire was imprisoned could easily have been saved for the next watch story, if told at all.

My dad gave me a Victorinox original model (the basic one you described) 16 years ago and I carry it with me to this day. The screw drivers get about 200x more use than either blade. The only annoyance is that the South Australian police have the right to arrest you for carrying any "weapon" so I'll be a in a real "justify it" situation if a cop wants to be a real prick. And Weapon status is based on intent, not actual usefulness as a weapon (ie a pen could be considered a weapon).

  12. Re:Oh...goodie! on Valve Pens In-Game Ad Deal for Counter-Strike · · Score: 1

All your content comes from your local steam content server, so you couldn't block the ads without blocking all the rest of the updates, hence your server wouldn't be "pure".
Lots of players (myself included) will only play on Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) secured servers, it reduces (although nothing can eliminate) the number of exploits such as wallhacks and aimbots.
If you are only running 3rd party maps on your server, then I am sure these ads will never appear.
But how many servers are there that don't just loop Dust2 and Train?

  13. Re:Oh...goodie! on Valve Pens In-Game Ad Deal for Counter-Strike · · Score: 1

Any ads appearing in game would simply be textures overlayed onto predefined walls or billboards and as such would be supplied by the CS server.
So you wouldn't be able to filter out the ads without blocking the server.
You could always drop back to offline play if ads really offend you, but CS cost $20 and has returned me more enjoyable game time than I've seen from some $80 titles.
If Valve wants to put ads in that don't impact my gameplay (by for instance appearing as a popup that I must wait 3 seconds before passing or something) then I don't really care.
