... since Symbian's Epoc operating system (especially the Quartz DFRD) will be most serious threat PalmOS will ever have to face. With all the major phone manufacturers backing Epoc, there's only so much anyone else can do..
(I mean, who _wouldn't_ want to have one instead of two devices in the pockets? A Quartz WID with a Bluetooth headset is the #1 choice for the future here in Europe. I don't know how much of this info has leaked into the US... )
The trick to change region is obviously an easter egg put in their by one or more software engineers. They have most surely been fired by now - easter eggs are not kindly looked upon by management.
What "will be"? The Atari is still produced and developed today, as clones. The userbase (still alive and kicking) is producing the operating system (which is preemptive multitasking and all that, I'm not following it closely)
Check out LGD. Download PacifiST, WinSTon and Echo (try to find 0.7b though). They're very good emulators, Echo even manages to emulate tricks like no-border and syncscrolling.
It's better to do what have done for the last month or so. I've bought back my old fav. computer (Atari ST, not Amiga though). I got 2 systems, monitors, cables, harddrives etc - for really nothing.. they're dirt cheap used.
What then? Coding of course:) I was a good demo coder back then, nothing has changed. Sure - PC demos and the Playstation 2 looks better, but it's still the same thing for me.
Nostalgia - or maybe "therapy from the boring stuff at work";)
I wouldn't want a new Atari (they do exist, as clones) - and I agree with the previous posters that there's no need for a new Amiga. If you want to revive your old memories, just buy one used!:)
Anyone over in the US got a spare room I can move into?
Are you nuts? The US is even worse... I think I'll stay here in Sweden for a few more years, and then hopefully things are sorted out in Australia. Else it'll have to bee New Zeeland I guess.
Summary? Sorry, no. However, Epos is a truly great operating system. I develop on it, and I am amazed at how well it supports developers.
It's C++ from the beginning to the end, and it's very cleverly written for speed and low memory print. It also has a unique way of handling faults - especially out of memory conditions, which means that application very seldom crash at all - you have to use that one for a while to really appreciate it:)
Epoc is also 32 bit all the way, and has low level support for everything you need to develop networking applications (everything is gonna be done wireless soon:)
I think the rumours about Nokia and Motorola using the Palm UI ontop of the Epoc core says a lot - no matter if they're true or not.
Psion began developing Epoc in the early 90's - this is not a new operating system. It's old, well understood, is written for low memory battery powered devices from the beginning - it's what we all want.
... students on campus don't really buy CDs anymore, which I know many of you can confirm. That we don't like the actions of the RIAA doesn't mean we can't see objectively on the matter.
We need music over the web, micropayable - I'm all for commercial solutions as long as they're not closed standards. If I could buy music for a reasonable amount of money I would - instead of downloading crap quality mp3s (yes, crap quality - people who don't know how to grab without getting click sounds, or mp3-compress with the wrong programs etc)
In fact, I've _stopped_ listening to mp3s - I'm just waiting for the commercial music-over-the-net solutions.. please? Anyone?
Cebit is still on, go there - see the Ericsson palm sized Epoc device with bluetooth, GPS etc. See Psion demo Quartz in their stand, see Symbian demo Quartz in their stand.
Ok, so now I've went through all your thoughtful comments. I'm sorry - you've misunderstood this. All talk about "we need to buy so and so much stock to get a majority" - "how much money are you interested in investing to get this rolling" - "let' by MGM since they're the cheapest".. blablabla.
You only need ONE stock to make your voice heard. ONE. That's not much...
Get it? We're NOT buying a majority stake in these companies - we just want to make our voice heard and to get some media attention (oh yes, we will).
Now, back to the article - read through it again - please.
Now, EFF, are you listening? I'd be happy to participate, even though I guess it will be a lot harder since I'm a Swede.. Don't have a broker in the US.. yet.
Consoles will always have a market as long as your computer screen isn't the same as your big widescreen living room TV. 4 player game in front of a single monitor? Don't think so. You know, some of us actually meet people in what's called Real Life(tm);)
Now, also on the 8th, the normally *very* reliable mail-server at Concentric Networks -- a large national ISP -- has been refusing to respond for more than an hour.
A campus network in Sweden was subject to hack attempts from concentric.net hosts on the 8th, so I hardly believe this has something to do with the US government...
Paranoid americans as usual.

Hey.. I still use FidoNet!
... and UseNet. I don't see where else you'll find the same info as you do in sci.crypt as an example.
UseNet dead? Oh no - we just don't have to put up with all the newbies;)
For a good news service - have a look at UseNet Server.com - I get my feed from there.
You can't have been reading many slashdot posts. DVD movies are being pirated in huge numbers every day, one the Internet, using DeCSS. They're converted to VCD first.
Point is, this could be done before DeCSS also, and still is. DeCSS wasn't the first program that made it possible to rip DVDs..
Point two: Asian DVD pirates (that actually make their own DVDs) don't use DeCSS... they don't have to.
I don't think you really understand the concept of an embedded OS.
Also it is easy to develop for
Sorry, to disappoint you - but writing embedded operating systems is my day time job, and I've been developing on Windows CE until my former employer (Ericsson) said "Windows CE no more"..:)
No way Windows CE is easy to develop for, or for that matter, a modern well-thought out operating system.
WinCE is more than dead (it's called Pocket PC now, right?) - PalmOS and Symbian OS (Epoc) is the way to make this attractive.
Palm has a huge momentum in the US, and in Europe there's no doubt that Symbian will rule the smartphone and handheld market completely. Looking at their website they have special made versions of the OS for many screen sizes and devices. It's only a question of _when_ those things will appear on the market. To get a brief hint on what's to come, look at how many awars the Psion Revo has won!
It will be very interesting to see an OS not really made to work on small devices compete in this arena. WinCE failed badly - PalmOS is doing quite well even though it's hardly a real OS, and the Symbian OS has been tailor made by first Psion and now Symbian since many many years for exactly this...
Yeah, I have devices with WinCE, PalmOS and the Symbian OS;) The MC218 (by Ericsson) is the one I use for my daily work...
When played, you get NTSC at 29.97 fps (inserting duplicate fields) but PAL at 25 fps by speeding everything up (yes, it's true:)
Now, judging from this, PAL DVDs are a lot better... but. Often, the region 1 versions have higher bitrate and more content. Region 2 DVDs just have a lot of languages and subtitles... and since bitrate is very important, I do import all my DVDs from DVD Boxoffice
When you purchase a DVD, you are purchasing the right to view the movie.
... and I may do that in any way I wish;
- even if that means breaking an encryption. You say this isn't the case in Sweden - well, I live here, so tell me where you found that information:)
_Restricting_ my right to view the movie I bought is on the other hand quite dodgy. There's no software license I have to agree to when buying a DVD that says I can only view it using means given to me by the MPAA or DVD-CCA...

Milan is one Atari clone
For some nostalgia, have a look at our webpage ;)
Sync - one of the truly great Atari ST demo crews
Red Fox / Sync

In any case, that's the platform this should be targeted at. Look at computers like the Milan etc.
Are you nuts? The US is even worse ... I think I'll stay here in Sweden for a few more years, and then hopefully things are sorted out in Australia. Else it'll have to bee New Zeeland I guess.
Anyone with more suggestions?

At least I want a Quartz device!

NTSC is 704*480, PAL is 704*576
Where do you live where TVs are only 320*240?

What MS has to do is to get spanked badly in the US, and then convince the EU that they need money to be able to sell their product.
Hey - it works for all other companies in the EU ;)
(overrated, not funny at all, spanked)
