    The problem is with the solder joints. After many cycles of heating up and cooling down they just lose contact. The most common error to get is three red lights on the console and if you check the error code it will be 0102.

    It's fixable if you're good with a heat gun (for soldering jobs). The error is very common - and it's not just from one batch. Microsoft will have to admit to this error again and again in the months to come.

    No, not really. Seriously - both Afghanistan and Iraq are worse off today than they were before the US invasion/occupation. You will however need to switch away from Fox News to learn that truth.

    Latest from Afghanistan: The "decency police" is making a comeback. Yes, the one that whipped women on the street who weren't wearing a burka, and that measured the length of men's beards.

    The most likely outcome in Iraq now is that it won't survive as a country. The Kurds will get the north, the east will become a part of Iran (which is less of a dictatorship than the US favourite countries of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia btw) and the south might try to do something with the two previously mentioned states (due to the sunni/shia divide).

    He's probably swedish, some residental cooperations and city networks have got very good deals on fiber.

    I can't get fiber, but I have symmetric 12/9 VDSL (of which my actual throughput, measured, is 9/9) - at ~$50/month. The uplink makes all the difference.

    I'm confused as to what that means...will they be turning over your source IP at the specific point in time, will they be linking your source IP to your VPN IP at a specific point in time, will they be linking you VPN IP to your name and address at a specific point in time, or what?

    My _guess_ is that they're never under any obligation to keep a record of your source IP, and thus they can never give that away.

    The service is pre-paid. If they have done their homework it's up to you if you enter your real details. All you really need is a secret token of some sorts (password, certificate) and all they need is to make sure that reaches whatever means of communication you entered when they've got paid (anonymous mail, sms etc).

    Note: I have no idea if that is how they've done it - if they haven't, they should. I'm sure Rick managed to get hold of a few people with security know-how in creating this service. If not, he knows where to find them .. *g*

    It's important because when new games perform additional security checks copies of those games won't run (remember - you can't change anything in the executables of the copy since the signing process isn't broken)

    No such thing though.

    According to Bloomberg, Microsoft have stated that they will be not adjusting the 360's price in light of the launch of the PS3. An MS rep commented there is currently no schedule in place to cut prices.

    Changing cosmological constants and our inability to explain the underlying structure of the machine performing the simulation are explained quite nicely in that theory/religion/philosophy - and we could, if we wanted, try to find signs of being in a simulation in several ways.

    Or, we could just accept that currently anyone even mentioning this possibility is being regarded as a crackpot ;)

    Please pay attention. We talked about half up until 1980 - the second quote was that it indeed has caused a lot of the increase we've seen after that year as well.

    (... and we still don't know all that much about it. Again - you seem to be far more certain of your view than you have facts supporting it)

    Calling everything localised won't win you many arguments, btw. The whole earth, in one way or the other, is just a bunch of localised weather.

    Deviations after 1980 could be the _cleaner_ atmosphere that ended the path to global cooling. We don't know. We definitely do not know enough to blame CO2 almost singlehandledly as some try to do just because it's popular.

    I read in a post further down that there are claims the weather wasn't warmer up here in the Nordic countries during medieval times. Weird thing is, we who live here know it was - that's not even a disputed fact. Watch out for dangerous "official" spins trying to disprove that the weather (and temperature) changes regularly.

    (I'm all for global warming - I think it'll bring a lot of positive effects outside of the flooded coastal areas. The resulting wars and famine will be brought along sooner by peak oil than by the floods anyway)

    I agree, but in this case the poll was done via forum posts, and it was easily seen that it was both the forum regulars who had problems (and it was the list of total owners that had a lot of unknown/new names) - and the problems were not simple lockups but real defective consoles (this applies to Loading, I don't know about IGN).

    15% with a large uncertainty, in two separate polls, is still a statistical problem when Microsoft claims they're really below 3%.

    Both IGN and Loading (Sweden's biggest console forum) ran unofficial polls on their sites as to the number of X360 owners, and of those, how many who had gotten one (or more!) defective consoles.

    The polls clocked in, both, at ~15%.

    (IGNs had 700 or so participants, Loading's about 200)
